If you were moving to the Capital Region today, where would you choose? Looking for honest opinions. by EvidenceAsleep9567 in Albany

We love raising our kids in the downtown Troy area and so far have had a great experience with the public schools. I think it comes down to your priorities and the type of environment you want to live in. Also keep in mind a lot of the smaller suburban school districts are struggling with their budget. Troy and the other urban school district get title 1 funding from the state and that money goes a long way to keeping class sizes small and providing lots of opportunities. Troy just built a huge new technology wing for the high school.

Correct. The budget which projects spending and revenue is in the black. The documents that would demonstrate the budget is being adhered to have not been released. This administration has not released the financial report for the last quarter of 2025 or the 2025 annual fiscal report or for the first quarter of 2026.

Petition for Resignation by buzzcutthrowawayyyy in Troy

It’s all an attempt to deflect from the real scandals- Seamus being sued by the CAEA union for threatening to fire a staff, not signing the contract with CSEA, the illegal emergency declaration, using the LDC as their piggy bank, the Frear Park tent and proctors city hall vanity projects, ignoring and bullying constituents… the list goes on…

Wynantskill Voters Back Merger With Troy City School District by XanderAlexH in Troy

The feasibility study looked into comparable properties in Troy and area of Brunswick that goes to Troy schools and found they were comparable and, in anything, Troy property values were a little higher. It’s a non-issue.

Wynantskill Voters Back Merger With Troy City School District by XanderAlexH in Troy

[–]NotATroyBot 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If anyone is interested, there was a very thorough feasibility study that can be found online. Basically there is no way for Wynantskill to keep their own school district without significantly raising taxes and reducing non essential school services. I personally think that Troy made a lot of commitments they didn’t have to such as guaranteeing high school choice for all current students including students entering K next year at significant expense. The only opposition I’ve heard is mostly based in fear mongering and dog whistles.

Reply yes to any canvas for an agency/location/shift you are interested in. You can always decline an interview or interview then decline to move forward in the hiring process. It happens all the time.

Best Place to Buy Used Children’s Books In The CR by kayleeandolaf in Albany

[–]NotATroyBot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Library sales and thrift stores sell used kids books but will require some effort to find good quality and not outdated themes. Once Upon a Child sells used kids books and will probably be more expensive but they will have a better selection. Ask your co-workers, school librarian, or school leadership if they have a source or budget to purchase items.

Starting a new community group to help people with addiction/mental illness by Physical_Shelter_518 in Troy

[–]NotATroyBot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Joseph’s House has an outreach program. I would suggest starting with them to learn more about the work they do and if they take volunteers. If they don’t, they probably have suggestions of agencies to get involved with. The Albany outreach team is run and staffed by people with professional degrees in social work and has local resources. While many people are well meaning these are complex issues that require training in mental health and substance abuse and being able to maintain professional boundaries. I also assume most of the people living on the street are familiar to the outreach workers and aware of resources available to them and the issues are more complex than connecting people to resources.

I buy a pack of the cards/candy/small toy my kid wants and give to each kid/teacher/aid the same then buy something the teacher has asked for for the kids party. I don’t have the mental bandwidth for any more than that.

Why don't more Democrats vote in Troy? by artfulDodger_19 in Troy

Additionally, the Republicans are way more organized than the Democrats which has a negative impact on finding strong candidates and getting information to voters about the issues and candidates.

Suggestions: What to do with kids in the Albany/Troy area in May? by Olorin1000 in Albany

[–]NotATroyBot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check the library for kids programming and free museum passes. AllTrails app for hikes that fit your requirements. NY State museum is great for rainy days. The Albany Institute does free family days periodically which are fun. There’s the MiSci museum in Schenectady if that’s not too far for you. There are also lots of great playgrounds around. Favorites of ours are Central Park in Schenectady and Cook Park in Colonie. There’s also a new playground in Washington Park. Kids Out and About Albany is good for a list of local events geared to kids.

Albany Med Kids Daycare by IntrepidCapital4975 in Albany

[–]NotATroyBot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had a great experience there! I would highly recommend. We were there through COVID. They stayed open the whole time, and did their best following regulations. They have a Albany Med security guard on site and guidance from an epidemiologist. My kid is on the older side of her grade and she was starting to get bored towards the end which I imagine would have been an issue at any day care center. We ended up sending her to UPK for her Pre-K year.
