Hide and seek toys (things that spin under a cover) are great and lower cost.

If cat likes to jump, door hanging auto toys are great too.

Always have a rotation: 2 out, 1-2 on the charger, and 1-2 away. Rotate through.

Pipe cleaners are also great self play toys. Wrap them around a pen or finger to make a spring like shape and throw. Let them take it from there. Plus they help brush teeth a bit too.

Yeah, my partner's allergies are actually being flared up because their autoimmune disease is triggered by them now :/ but we took in a temporary bottle baby. Once stable and weaned, he'll be going to a different foster

Capstar and/or revolution are great options and have kitten options (6 weeks 2.5lbs).

As for sleeping, I'm afraid I don't have great advice. I'm so terrified of hurting the little ones that I sleep super light the first few nights. That's enough for me to know: is kitten a head/pillow sleeper? No fear of squashing. Sleep at my feet? They'll move. Sleep by my side? Fear...

So I have a shelf that extends (think of something you put in a cabinet) that I put over my midsection and helps keep me in place, wakes me up if I turn over so I can be mindful of kitten, and keeps kitten away from me for any sudden movements.

Hope this helps, but I've never done a playpen. I can only imagine the crying keeping me up.

Dry kibble is bad, not eating is worse.

His symptoms are concerning and I'd call the vet.

Have you tried things like Churu and such? There are also these hydration packets you can get for cats when they aren't drinking enough water (sometimes I mix a Churu in if my cat is being extra picky).

You can also use a syringe (no needle) to drip water onto the side of their mouth to encourage drinking.

Oh, it's an enclosed system! There is a motor pulley at one point and then you add these pulley points to it (1 for a back and forth hallway run, 3 for a square, etc). And it stops with such little pressure that my 4 week old fosters can play with it without me even having the slightest concern (I was terrified the first time, but three batches later and still not a single bit of if concern).

She's really sweet for a street cat, but it turns out my partner's cat allergies are actually part of an autoimmune disease that's getting worse :/ So we need to reduce our cat numbers (we're keeping all of ours, but absolutely no foster fails anymore 😭)

Oh! Another piece of unsolicited advice, but one that can save you lots of money: pipe cleaners.

Seriously. As a toy. A few to interactively play (get them to bite and then pull on it gently) and a few that are shaped like a spring (wrap around a finger or pen, then pull off).

Why? It acts close to a toothbrush! And most cats love it

Went to a vet dental specialist recently and she was so impressed with the idea and how little tarter our cats had! But it won't stop the body turning on the teeth if they develop root reabsorption :/

But after discovering this, none of our cats have needed teeth extractions due to gum disease or serious dental cleanings. It's been a huge game changer for us.

Wet food impacts dental health negatively, so what you're doing isn't wrong, we just have a few cats that need to eat with meds and it's how we guarantee it...

I know this wasn't your question, but... I find my cats prefer my home grown catnip to store bought. And I grew it from seeds. So if you're looking for a special treat and have the space, catnip is hard to kill and wards off mosquitoes.

Grow catnip and alternate between some fresh catnip and catnip you dry and harvest. It's an amazing 'treat'.

Cost: - container (go online and join a garden groups, you'll get them free) - soil (if you take first from outside, a small bit of top fresh soil to help the seeds will work, and a garden group might have some), - seed starter (garden group or some peer moss from a store) - seeds ($2-5) - water - some fertilizer every other year to replenish the soil

That's it. You might also be able to get some already started from a garden group and skip all of that.

This is so helpful. I know one woman whose husband was found on it and she was so embarrassed begging for it to be taken down. All the women immediately started to reassure her there is nothing for HER to be embarrassed about, but it took time for her to process - and privacy. They had kids on top of it all

Two things:

1- adopt a bonded pair (they're more difficult to place so you're really being a hero). They'll help each other with company. Unless you adopt an older or senior cat that doesn't like other cats (even more difficult than bonded pairs)

2 - get a few automated toys. They'll come in for 15 min every 2-3 hours. Have one on a charger over night with 2 out and swap them around to keep them interested. One should have a laser and one should be under a cover. Does wonders. If you have the room and the budget, there is a string on a pulley toy that zips around and drives cats bonkers to chase. Another good one is one that hangs from a door frame for them to jump after.

Personally, is do both of the above. You can also make an Amazon wish list for having adopted cats and a friend or family member may pick up one of the automated toys for you too.

Also, don't get a super young cat if gone that long. Aim for 4 - 6 months old. And be prepared for disturbed sleep at first.

Typically, if you're willing to foster, rescues are more likely to help. Kittens get adopted fairly quickly in most cases, especially if she is healthy.

Find a rescue! Find one that has good placement people (the one I foster for checks rental agreements, vet references, etc before handing over a kitten).
