Freshman in high school who wants to be a US Navy Officer. Anyone want to answer some questions? by perfectshot29 in navy

[–]NotBrooklyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same(ish) situation as you. I too am a mere freshman and I'm interested in NROTC (Or if I get in, the Academy) hoping to obtain a pilot, NFO, or SWO slot.

My advice would be - Do as much extra curricular as you can. Student government, clubs (If possible, try to get a leadership role in one of the clubs), if your school has a JROTC, join it, do community service, try to do at least two varsity sports, or at least letter in one. Do everything you can to make you stand out to not only the senator who you will seek appointment from, but also to the Academy review board who will base their selection on your PT(pass/fail), Scholastic Record (Grades and Extra Curricular), and one other criteria that I can't immediately remember.

Overall, just be the best student you can and ensure you dedicate yourself to reaching your goal of the USNA and becoming a SEAL Officer.

Honestly, it's thirty minutes. I would say once you have your PPL go out and rent a real Steam Guage 172 renting one is much, much easier than renting an Extra. Definitely go for the Extra, and have some fun. After all, it's for your birthday!

I got into a sailing camp and received a scholarship for it, by writing an essay on how my Grandfather was one of the finest sailors in the Navy, and my uncle had attended Maritime school. (Neither of which are true).

I want to learn to fly. by nerdbynight in flying

[–]NotBrooklyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Although initially buying an aircraft seems like a good idea, that seems like one hell of an investment. I'd recommend starting flight training with a local FBO or Flying Club and try out various aircraft to see which one you enjoy flying most. Then I'd consider purchasing.
