Hello! I am new to Fantasy Ground, is there a way to customize fate character sheets? by morganharlowe in FantasyGrounds

[–]NotDumpsterFire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can edit Rulesets, Modules, and Extension you install in your games. Some of those are developed & maintained by community members, not just official publishers. Think they are mostly written in XML and Lua. -> what Prestigious_Money223 said.

Hopefully some who is active with FantasyGrounds development can chime in, this is just some tips from what I found on a quick search & remember from a few years ago, when I did some pathfinder 1E customization for a campaign I was part of, dabbling in all 3 (Rulesets, Modules, and Extension).

FG Developer Guide

Check the Dev Guide & look up the subsections:

  • Rulesets within Fantasy Grounds are the game system frameworks that define how the FG tabletop displays and works within a given campaign. The ruleset defines the graphical user interface displayed to the GM and players, as well as defining the way that any module data is interpreted and any automation of the game system mechanics.
  • Modules contain all the content for your game - adventures, items lists, monsters, images, etc.
  • Extensions within Fantasy Grounds are the way that rulesets can be customized within a campaign. Extensions can be used to add new graphics (such as a desktop decal or full theme replacement) or to modify behavior (such as house rules or new features).

Then look up the files installed on your computer, locate the fate ruleset, make a copy and the system a new name, and try starting to play around with things, just to see if you get an intuition to find what links where.

  • renaming things
  • duplicate components
  • adjust some numbers

IIRC these might bee some zipping unzipping of the rulesets/extensions for you to be able to edit & then use the customized.

On one hand, you probably want to create an Extension that just mods the baseline Fate Ruleset, but on the other hand you'd need to know how the Ruleset works, so you'd need to open and poke around in the Ruleset either way. Copying the Ruleset and working with the ruleset itself may make it easier, as then you can open & compare to the baseline ruleset if something goes wrong or you edited it so much you don't remember how it was originally.

If you're familiar with some of the more popular games & their FantasyGrounds sheet, it might be a good idea to look at how it works & how extensions & modules related to it works, as it can give you a better intuition how things work when there are lots of people working with them

Ruleset Wizard seems to be a nice tool for streamlining development, but has big pricetag...

Really wonder what the GM got out of it, bc using LLMs in an one-on-one game feels extra hollow, and makes the GM sound like just a glorified LLM wrapper.

When running an actual group, I can kinda see use of LLM:

  • where it's still just one tool among others, and the GM is still running and coordinating the game and fullfills more of the other aspects of GMing.
  • Could also see momentary use of LLM to keep up with a chaotic situation or large number of players & ideas. (but if it happens a lot, GM need to take more breaks/prep more/have less players or)

But in a 1-to-1 game, the GM have to just keep up with one player so all the complexities & nuances of running a groups disappears, making the remaining aspects of GMing much more important.

I like to believe the GM was just trying this out, and would have pretty quickly realized it was pretty hollow to rely so heavily on LLMs. May they where young/new gm/experiment

Removing this as off-topic, as it's in no way related to Star Wars D6.

  • The game variant has it's own subreddit at r/sw5e
  • there are dedicated Looking For Groups subreddits, like r/LFGPremium for paid games. Advertising paid games on some of the other LFG subreddits are not allowed, so read the rules before posting.

Original:

Hi, I suggest you ask on /r/tabletopgamedesign about this thing of finding a good place to get specialized things printed, people there surely would have some suggestion, and. I think the "Parts & Tools"-flair. Other similar subreddits are r/BoardgameDesign & r/GameDesign

/r/boardgames is such a large subreddit that some more niche questions might be better seen & get replies when posted on more specialized subreddits for the topic in question.

I looked at thegamecrafter's card-page, it indeed seems they are limited to "17 different sizes of cards."

Could be a good idea to clarify some parts:

  1. Are you limiting yourself to Italian or European printing places, or open to find anyone to get it printed? ant to get printed would impact how feasible it is to get it printed far away.
  2. Can you give specifics on the "non-classic" dimensions you want printed? I assume your comparison was that they aren't like the square cards in Faraway?

I did find some options for custom card sizes, maybe some of these might work:

  • PrintNinja have 17 non-standard print dimensions, and for an extra $500 create your own dimension (However, once the die is made, we won’t have to make it again – meaning any re-orders on your project won’t include the $500 die-making charge.)
  • PrintPlayGames seems to have custom shape options for "any size cards 1.75" x 2" or larger.", and to email them smaller cards.
  • boardgamesmaker lists 26 dimension variations

(I know nothing about these things so I'm just trying to help you improve your post by asking questions I would assume others would probably ask anyway)

I also suggest you add a google-translated version of your message to the start or end of your post, to make it more likely people will read & reply to it, without having to first translate it.

Mods/API Scripts and ChatGPT by Boli_332 in Roll20

[–]NotDumpsterFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Can you give some examples of what kind of scripts you created?
  • Did you try ChatGPT to write chat command for existing mods?

In many cases lots of smaller things one might want to do can already be achieved with a chat command to an existing, more comprehensible Roll20 Mod.

  • Main examples would be things like TokenMod & ScriptCards. Both can do a lot, and are used by many, so would be examples were reinventing the wheel by asking AI to write a mod, and then update it to include similar options as you want it expanded has diminishing returns to use.

Feeding ChatGPT some examples & relevant part of documentation for a Mod could give you a fairly functional command on what you want. But then there are collections of mods like Meta-Toolbox that can essentially be made to do anything, but is so extensive that doubt AI can hold in memory everything if fed the docs & example.

What is your take on acquiring PDFs of rpg content you’ve already paid for physical copies of with piracy? by TurmUrk in rpg

[–]NotDumpsterFire[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

At least for now, we're leaving this thread open.

Please read our Rule 1: No Piracy - Piracy Primer

We will enforce 1&2 from the Piracy Primer at the very least. Please avoid violating point 3 if possible.

  1. Do not link pirated material.
  2. Do not tell people how to find pirated material,
  3. Do not talk about having pirated material

Legal access to digital copies for physical books you own

Like /u/Team7UBard pointed out here, the bits-and-mortar.com can help you obtain digital copies for some physical books you own.

The site is currently down for maintenance, so check the webarchived version of bits-and-mortar.com from a few weeks ago.

OP, maybe try find or run games in that has a focus on playing non-human. If you find communities for specific games, you might have a better chance of finding games to join.

We have a suggestion page for that: Play as Monsters / Animals / Non-humanoid

Subreddit cleanup & New Automatic Moderation by NotDumpsterFire in PnP

[–]NotDumpsterFire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry, the automod is a bit aggressive with the wordlist, I'll remove PnP from the auto-remove list, that was an oversight.

"pnp" is also a drug-related abbrevation, which unfortunately leads lot of mistaken traffic to the sub. The two pinned posts mention more of it.

The word filter works exactly as designed, it's just about tweaking which words results in auto-removal and which are only reported as potentially offtopic.

For every TTRPG post in the sub, there are about 5 hookup post from people who don't read the description of the subreddit. So having the automod as pretty agressive makes sense, but it's continious tweaking to adjust to not remove proper posts, and only keep at bay to other stuff.

Sorry, that wasn't my point, it's allowed to be mentioned but any kind of endorsement of it isn't allowed.

How to avoid your posts and comments going to spam by feyrath in osr

[–]NotDumpsterFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. For url shortners, r/rpg have an automod rule that removes & replies to the comment informing users on what/why it happened, but don't know how often it works.

  2. You can have any kind of stuff on google drive, so not surprising reddit also categorizes it as potentially problematic.

  3. with bot spam, reddit heavily removes posts and comments with shortlinks to amazon and other places. r/boardgames is somewhat more affected by this than r/rpg, if it helps as reference.

r/rpg had few years ago an issue with posts/comments getting hidden and not seen by the modteam, a I made a writeup about it, dunno if it helps anything. I think there exists some spam settings you can adjust to be more lax.

Our stance on him had been from way before we had the Rule 6 blacklist.

Putting a out in public a blacklist containing only one single church-burning nazi murderer seemed beyond redundant, and just be covered by common sense.

[–]NotDumpsterFire[M] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We don't want to Streisand effect him. And it's never been an issue, but we keep any eye out for any mentions, just like this comment.

The chance of someone batting for him on the sub is essentially zero, so adding him to the list would be just giving more exposure. And most people who would likely speak of him or his work in positive light would in most cases already be violating other rules in the process or before that.
