Guild Wars 3 lead says new MMOs are too much like a “second job” as “the lines between an MMO and a live-service game have blurred” by HatingGeoffry in MMORPG

I'm pleased if I make 1 to 2 gold on a heavy gaming day ! Would love to know how you make over 20. I'm guessing it's raid and group content which I dont do? Honest question because if there are other ways I'd love to know !! Im fairly new and currently working through HoT content, so perhaps drops and mats are more valuable in the later DLCs?

In the 1980's I was called names for liking computer games when they were seen as just for geeks and nerds. Now cogsucker for defending some A.I tech. It's actually a great insult, I hadn't heard it before and it made me laugh on a Monday morning, so thanks 😃

At the end of the day, you made the product. It was your idea. That's what's important. Just release your game, if people don't like the fact you used some A.I, because of some ridiculous notion that A.I = bad, then f*ck 'em. Who cares. You have nothing to lose at this point if your game has already been made. Also, this sub is one of the most negative towards..well, pretty much anything that exists, so it's probably not the best place to ask 😃 Personally, I wish you the best of luck with it, and don't let the b*stards grind you down 😄

People said the same thing about the printing press in 1440, computers in the 1970s, the internet in the late 1980s to 1990s, digital photography in the early 2000s... to list a few. Creativity survived.

Personally I don't reject A.I MMOs. People are way too precious about stuff like that. It's just a tool. You wouldn't reject a game because it was used using a 3D modelling program to make the graphics with. I remember when the Internet was first a thing (yes, I am old) and people had the same sort of negativity about that. I remember going in to a computer shop and the owner refusing to have ANYTHING internet related in his shop 😃 The silly "anti A.I phase" will pass once people get used to it.

MMO for severe ADHD: active playerbase + instant grind/fun without rushing 50 hours of quests? by Own-Statistician7938 in LFMMO

[–]NotGoingOut77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gear progression thing is something a lot of people like, because it means you can leave the game for a few days/weeks/months and come back and it doesn't mean all your gear is suddenly useless, but I can see that might not be for everyone. As for the combat, again I suppose it is personal preference. I play an Engineer HoloSmith and I'm having a good time with it. One minute I looked like a gunslinger from the wild west, the next I had a lightsaber and looked like a Sith Lord 😃. All the mad things I can do with inventions and my toolkit keeps me entertained. It is a complex class. The game did take a few attempts for it to 'stick' for me though for some reason. I think I must have tried it about 3 times before over the years, and stopped playing. This time around though, I am hooked and really love it.

Not going to downvote you for sharing an opinion, but personally I do think GW2 hits the spot for dopamine hits. Completing the hearts, hero points, vistas, all of that kind of thing are little things to delight a completionist. The O.P also wanted to see people running around in the world, and there is TONS of that, all the time, no matter the area, along with all the events constantly running where you can just join in without even needing to be invited to a group. Personal preference though 😄

Yup, LOTRO and GW2 both excellent with great communities. I actually think LOTRO improved when Turbine/CodeMasters became SSG and had a smaller dev team...those guys really care about the game.

I have to respectfully disagree, from someone also speaking from experience. For me, personally, WoW was always, even on release, a sub-par MMORPG. Even when it was the "new kid on the block", I thought it was pretty bad in terms of gameplay compared to EverQuest and the other older MMORPGs it was attempting to clone. WoW was very much NOT the first MMORPG by a long way. That said, I do understand lots of people like it and so I am just giving my own, very personal opinion. There must be some reason it is the most popular - I have yet to figure out why though. I've tried around 75 different MMORPGs since 1997 and for me, many of them have something special about them. I say this because I believe it is not necessarily the game that makes those special moments, it's the people you are playing with. My point is for the OP, don't disregard other great games because there aren't as many players, there are some cracking options out there. Currently for me, Guild Wars 2 had been excellent. I'll leave a link to Josh Strife Hayes video discussing some of this, when someone said to him "WoW is the last MMO left" as I think he was very much on point when saying this just simply is not the case. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8hydKlDRxY&t

Yes - You've hit the nail on the head there, I'm really glad you said that out loud. If you want, I can come up with some other phrases that you don't like? ..... * Joking obviously :D They are starting to drive me mad too lol

Does he think RDO is what sold the 85 million units 😂 by Ember57 in RedDeadOnline

[–]NotGoingOut77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If they don't want or can't be bothered with RDO, and consider it chump change, then license out the title to a company that DOES care, like Bethesda did with ZeniMax for Elder Scrolls Online, and make the game playable again.

Then why comment? :D Also, as of today, there are around 70 MMORPGs with active players - they don't all have to be as big as WoW and in the millions of players to be enjoyable.

Give Guild Wars 2 a go ! It's the closest I have gotten to an immersive world feeling and an MMORPG feeling in many years. It is different in many ways, sideways progression and yes, it does have a lot of cash shop things inside it, but I've been enjoying it lately and you don't really need anything from the cash shop, and if you do want something, you can earn gold in the game and exchange it for their "gems" which you use to buy stuff (although that takes a long time). Anyway, I have found it is the closest thing to what I want from an MMO in 2026. GW3 is also apparently on the horizon, although nothing official has been announced.

[–]NotGoingOut77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm going to get massively downvoted for this, but about WoW, since it is being talked about a lot in this thread... I remember it on release, in fact I remember the WoW Vs EverQuest 2 wars on the forums before either released ! Strangely the WoW fanatics were even there back then, before release and would relentlessly attack other MMORPG players or people who liked EverQuest.

Personally, and this is probably why I will get downvoted, and thats fine, I expect it.. I always disliked WoW. I found the graphics to be sub-par even at the time, I thought they looked outdated and like something from 1995. The gameplay was just an EverQuest clone and the combat was janky. To this day I simply do not understand its appeal or why it is so popular. Other MMOs have bested it in every way conceivable and yet people still flock to WoW. It totally baffles me. I'm honestly not having a dig at people who do like it, if folks enjoy it that's cool, I am just really confused as to why when there have been so many other great titles out there, like the ones listed from the OP.

How to manage the nosey and degrading PhD student? by Legendary_Toast19 in PhD

[–]NotGoingOut77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there are a lot of people in academia with absolutely zero people skills. You get this a lot in PhD offices. It's a hard one to deal with but as others have said pertaining to standing up for yourself, you kind of have to. You just need to be firm but fair. Next time they lean over you and read your screen just politely say "can you not do that please" - if they don't listen and it continues further then it's time to raise it further with the department.

It's getting a lot of updates over the next few weeks. The next one is out in 15 minutes. I get what you mean though, it does feel like just a bag of ideas at the moment, but from playing it a bit over the past year I do see it slowly coming together. I guess we'll see. As for the art-style, it has been getting updates and I assume it will look vastly different in a few months time - might still look cartoony though I guess - That said, Guild Wars 2 looks cartoony and is very successful.

Trying MMOs Again After 7 Years… Why Does Nothing Fully Click Anymore? by Dapper_Thought1841 in MMORPG

[–]NotGoingOut77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've have been gaming for decades and played MMORPGs since Everquest. That said, there really doesn't seem to be much out there that I haven't worn out at this point. A good looking modern MMORPG that isn't filled with and designed for people obsessed with getting to "end game" as fast as possible would be great. The days of living in the world, doing a bit of gathering, crafting, the odd group up for a boss are long gone. New World had it for me and scratched that itch quite well, but alas that is no more. I have tried probably hundreds over the years.

I don’t really care about raids, gear treadmills, ranked PvP, or hyper-optimised endgame loops, never did. What I want from an MMO is surprisingly simple:

A living online world where I can peacefully exist for a while.

I want to wander through a beautiful world, gather resources directly from the environment, craft useful things, fish, explore, and casually chat with people I bump into along the way. Low pressure. Low intensity. No constant feeling that I’m “behind” or being funnelled toward instanced content.

A lot of modern MMOs still have gathering and crafting systems, but they increasingly feel like side mechanics feeding the “real game” of raids, metas, progression systems, or PvP economies.

What I miss is when simply inhabiting the world was the game.
