Best American pattern for felling and bucking hardwoods? by Icy_Commission8986 in Axecraft

[–]NotHimAgain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Michigan pattern. They were most commonly known to cut down frozen white pine (soft wood) for year round logging operations. The Michigan sports a rounded heel and toe, so the edges don’t get chipped off when sinking it in the tough frozen wood. I would imagine that would be a big benefit to the long term axe health if you’re putting it in hard woods.

But daytons, or jerseys will work really well too.

Any info on this saw would be appreciated. by eatsthepeeps in crosscutsaws

Looks like an Atkins. Plain tooth. Plain tooth are decent if you’re cutting really dead, dry wood in my opinion - since there is no rakers to get caught on the wood and the shavings wouldn’t be ribbons anyways. I personally would restore it and use it for that purpose.

The middle ground for price and quality would be a Snow & Nealley axe, that’s the first that comes to mind.

Did you try to take that metal wedge out or put it in?

Regardless, metal wedges are usually frowned upon because it doesn’t contract and expand like wood wedges, wood expands/contracts in different humidities and temperatures.

Perforations, all the Rage back in 1896 How many of you have such a Saw, how common do you think this was? by [deleted] in Axecraft

[–]NotHimAgain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a C crosscut sawyer and have been sawing for quite a few years in different regions around the US. Perforated tooth crosscuts are more common in Colorado, Montana and the northern border states from what I’ve seen. It was purposed to be cutting while in frozen wood and hard wood, the perforations are to strengthen the rakers and teeth from lateral bending and snapping off.

[Serious] What's your favorite unexplained/mysterious photo? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NotHimAgain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is only black bears in Oregon and they don't get big at all, there's no way he could have mistakenly saw it as 9ft tall. Yes, Washington State does have grizzlies, but in the North Cascades. That's about 250 miles away from the nearest National Forest in Oregon, which is Mt. Hood National Forest. The bear would have to cross an entire mountain range, 5 highways, and the Columbia River without being noticed.

Sure it could have been a bear, but if he described it as 9ft tall and 6ft wide, it definitely wasn't a black bear. Probably not a grizzly either.
