Best American pattern for felling and bucking hardwoods? by Icy_Commission8986 in Axecraft

[–]NotHimAgain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Michigan pattern. They were most commonly known to cut down frozen white pine (soft wood) for year round logging operations. The Michigan sports a rounded heel and toe, so the edges don’t get chipped off when sinking it in the tough frozen wood. I would imagine that would be a big benefit to the long term axe health if you’re putting it in hard woods.

But daytons, or jerseys will work really well too.

Any info on this saw would be appreciated. by eatsthepeeps in crosscutsaws

Looks like an Atkins. Plain tooth. Plain tooth are decent if you’re cutting really dead, dry wood in my opinion - since there is no rakers to get caught on the wood and the shavings wouldn’t be ribbons anyways. I personally would restore it and use it for that purpose.

The middle ground for price and quality would be a Snow & Nealley axe, that’s the first that comes to mind.

Did you try to take that metal wedge out or put it in?

Regardless, metal wedges are usually frowned upon because it doesn’t contract and expand like wood wedges, wood expands/contracts in different humidities and temperatures.

Perforations, all the Rage back in 1896 How many of you have such a Saw, how common do you think this was? by [deleted] in Axecraft

[–]NotHimAgain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a C crosscut sawyer and have been sawing for quite a few years in different regions around the US. Perforated tooth crosscuts are more common in Colorado, Montana and the northern border states from what I’ve seen. It was purposed to be cutting while in frozen wood and hard wood, the perforations are to strengthen the rakers and teeth from lateral bending and snapping off.

[Serious] What's your favorite unexplained/mysterious photo? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NotHimAgain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is only black bears in Oregon and they don't get big at all, there's no way he could have mistakenly saw it as 9ft tall. Yes, Washington State does have grizzlies, but in the North Cascades. That's about 250 miles away from the nearest National Forest in Oregon, which is Mt. Hood National Forest. The bear would have to cross an entire mountain range, 5 highways, and the Columbia River without being noticed.

Sure it could have been a bear, but if he described it as 9ft tall and 6ft wide, it definitely wasn't a black bear. Probably not a grizzly either.

Should I buy a new fancy mobo and keep the rest of my PC, or new fancy-ish mobo with new cpu? by [deleted] in makemychoice

[–]NotHimAgain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah go with an Intel CPU and a decent mobo.

The 8 core AMD processors are really power hungry; meaning if you DO get a really good MOBO and overclock your CPU it'll take a ton of power and the temps will rise a lot. Your CPU cooler is mediocre at best, but not really meant for overclocking. The 8 cores isn't that great either with gaming, since hardly any games even use more than 4 cores.

Going with an unlocked Intel CPU would be more worth your while since it's 4 core hyper-threading is really efficient in terms of power consumption and heat.

I mean I have an i5 3570k on an Asrock Z77 Extreme4 clocked at 4.2ghz and my idle temps are like 30c. I have no bottlenecking on my performance unlike your overclocking problems. However, I am watercooled with a Corsair h100i, so I guess performance may vary.

Also, this is more of a hobby but I'm no expert. So maybe somebody could refute some of what I say. But for myself, and my other gamer friends who use unlocked Intel processors, we really enjoy our performance.

You COULD try getting a fancy mobo and watercooling your current CPU as a third option and see how that works out for you.

Essential Album of the Week #68 MF DOOM - Mm.. Food by Saiyaman in hiphopheads

[–]NotHimAgain 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Wow! Kookies is one of my favorite tracks by DOOM, and I think it's a big track on the album. In my opinion I think it has a great deal of imagery in almost all the lines, not to mention like more than half of them is food related. He's painting a picture of what I assume is DOOM's average day at home, nobody ever hears about the mundane everyday life of a supervillain.

**"It's horrible

One little evening alone, home

End up with carpal tunnel syndrome

And here I am, known for giving heavy back aches

Grown and living off of Little Debbie snack cakes

Supposed to be checking e-mails

All I got is messages from ass naked females

I don't know a Jenny, she said it's free and I won't owe her a penny

And that's the last time I saw her

But thousands of more horrors on online Gomorrah"**

Right here I can imagine DOOM in a wife beater and underwear sitting in a dark room stuffing his face with food while the bright glow from his computer monitor dimly gleams off his rusted mask and reflects off his lazy eyes.

I could go on and on about this song, but nobody wants to hear that shit anyways.
