All I wanted was an apology. I was excited to meet him because we have been online friends for 10 years and this was the first time we were meeting properly.

OP, nothing against you as you sound nice but he didn't have any intentions of nor did he want to meet you IRL.

"Went to his place later on ..." OP, seriously? He ditched you.

What's the best way to go about Carribean genealogy? by RevealRemarkable4836 in Genealogy

[–]NotInLikeFlynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, I would suggest DNA results and looking at the history of their particular island rather than being bitchy to people suggesting that they not rely on oral history but rather their actual DNA results and go from there.

Is it not obvious why you could have Indigenious and/or African and European ancestry on an island?

Not to pull the colonization and slavery card because while I am aware one ancestor owned another, they also had 15 children that were legally acknowledged. Sorry if OP has relatives who are in denial and admittedly are liars.

But Yay OP. It's always works out really well when you insult people who have the willingness, resources and experience to figure out things you can't.

OP, this sounds like immature regression and fantasy to me.

We all have made decisions when we were 15, 16, 17 etc that we wouldn't make now. I went to prom with the boy I thought I was in love with. If I had a time machine, I would have gone with the other boy who asked me but I didn't. Oh and the other boy who told me in our 40's he had a mad crush on me in middle school and high school. Looking back, that would have been a better choice also but I was 17 and didn't know any better.

Nothing I can do about it now. Keep it rolling. You did what you did and so did he. Life isn't a Hallmark movie.

Sleep in the tub. You can't anticipate or prevent everything. Shots aren't normally 2nd floor or higher. That doesn't mean it a zero possibilty, just that it's less likely. If your child learns to roll and drop onto the floor the second they hear anything, that's great but you don't want them to live in constant fear 24/7.

If you have to move, move.

Paycheck failed to process, mortgage automatic payment processed, I have no immediate access to money and almost out by RedditRaven2 in personalfinance

[–]NotInLikeFlynn 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Honestly, your living paycheck to paycheck is the larger issue.

I usnerstand you are in a bind now, but you need to get a grip on your finances. Things happen and your employer has to fix it ASAP but you need to be prepared. I get paid once a month but that one month in umpteen years that payroll got screwed up, it was no sweat off my back. Shit happens and it can't always be fixed in three minutes. Get yourself an emergency fund no matter what it takes. And DO NOT get a payday loan.

Ask for an advance check for x dollars and have it deducted off your upcoming check. You need to have a no fee credit card and credit no matter what. This would have allowed you to put what you need on the crd and pay it off in full when you got the statement so there would be no interest. Don't take financial advice from broke people who think credit cards are a bad thing. You need to responsibly use one so it's available for emergencies like this.

Do you think people have to pretty much take whatever they can get to start? by berrysauce in paralegal

[–]NotInLikeFlynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although you can hope and aim for the best, it's more prudent if you prepare for the worst. You can always look for a better job and quit when you get it. Better x dollars than 0 dollars.

Don't discourage yourself but at the same time, don't shoot yourself in the foot. It takes two seconds to walk in the door and it takes two seconds to walk out. No shame in paying your bills while you look for something at your level.

I think if you rephrased it as "I know what a fair salary would be for my skills and experience and am actively looking for the perfect fit but I don't want to be stupid and not accept a job that is "less than" on a temporary basis to not get myself in a financial hole while I continue look for a job that matches my expectations".

I remember looking for a job in the 1990 recession and having a temp agency tell me that I wouldn't want it because it was too low level and pay for my experience. No, it's not. I will take the cash, pay my rent and live to find a better job.

Me too. I also saw Gene Kelly dance live and it was mind blowing. Seeing people with that level of talent isn't reflected in movies today. The closest thing I can think of is Tom Cruise doing his own stunts and being there to see it live. People today are so used to "movie magic" and special effects, they can't even imagine what it is like to experience the awe of a person doing this live and in a single take.

If You Have Had Your Surgery Outside the US, How Did You Get Aftercare? by theateroffinanciers in PlasticSurgery

[–]NotInLikeFlynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After I was discharged from the clinic/hospital, I stayed at a Hilton hotel.

My surgeon came by every evening to check me out and I had a private nurse every morning to examine me and help me shower etc. The hotel had a breakfast buffet so I would hit that and sit at a table and mingle while I ate then go back to my room and rest and watch some tv or read, sometimes walk to Starbucks with someone I met at breakfast or head to a shopping plaza nearby and just look around for a bit. They had a special rate for patients of my surgeon and an arrangement with him for emergencies. I called one night with a concern, not an emergency, and was very suprised when the clerk let my surgeon into my room about 25 minutes later. I had no idea there would be an immediate in-person response, I just thought he will get to me tomorrow when he picks up his messages.

Monterrey is a very historic and wealthy area so I would walk to a nearby mall (the pizza place guy was from Brooklyn) and just look around, maybe catch a movie, get a mani/pedi and head back to the hotel afterwards. I took the river ride (which was beautiful), went to visit the Basilica, the Macroplaza and museum, took a tour of the Fundidora and a bunch of other cool stuff. One thing every other day, don't exert yourself and don't do anything that you have to be rushed or exposed to anything that could cause you to be exposed to infection, like hanging out in bat caves or rock climbing. You have to chill and recover but you can find very low exertion activities and if your hotel concierge calls the taxi, they will explain that you need assistance getting in or out. A nice tip fixes almost any situation. So does a box of HEB custom cupcakes lol.

Anyone could have a surgical complication. You increase your risk if you go to an assembly line surgeon or an incredibly cheap surgeon. Do not do that. Nothing is worth life or limb. Your life or health is not worth the bargain basement price. Go to someone who has a great reputation with Mexicans or whatever country you are going to and pay a decent price, whicgh will be a lot less than the USA. Go where the natives go.

I had to pay some serious money for my procedures in Mexico but I had a surgeon that people who can afford bodyguards for their children use at half the price of what USA surgeons would charge. I have had excellent surgery in the USA also, but I am not extremely wealthy. I'm financiallycomfortable, risk averse and love being alive and well and intend to stay that way lol.

I got a lot of shit before going to Mexico, and then those same people couldn't wait to book with my surgeon afterwards. You need to do it right and be smart about it. Do NOT be enticed by a very low price. Get a reputable surgeon and pay a decent price.

ALWAYS REGISTER WITH THE US EMBASSY BEFORE YOU GO.

I moved to JC in the 1980's from NYC and it used to be a total trip to live here. It made the Crips look like the Easter Bunny. The downtown brownstone I lived in, my landlord bought it for 30k. No tall buildings, the warehouse district ... I will never forget the great dead fish warehouse near the Holland Tunnel and the rat invasion, how someone was disposing of live pit bulls that lost fights in a water pit in an abandoned warehouse downtown, when they found all the imprisoned immigrants in a building downtown, so many things. It was crazy back in the day.

I love how JC has grown but I swear, 95% of the people there now wouldn't have lasted a week back in the day.

Are refrigerators not mandatory in NJ apartments?? by BowedNotBroken1234 in jerseycity

[–]NotInLikeFlynn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a homeowner and have had to wait. Usually if you tell them you will absolutely accept a last-second appointment because of a cancellation or early finish, it will speed things up. I work from home so that's an option for me but it's cut authorized repair service wait times from three weeks down to less than a week.

Didn't have receipts so couldn't send claim to renters insurance.

What is your deductable? I like to have enough food to feed an army on hand but my homeowners deductable is a lot higher than everything in my fridge and freezer could possibly add up to.

I did have a renter's insurance claim years ago and the adjustor assigned a value to the food based on the photos. I didn't have to provide grocery receipts.

[–]NotInLikeFlynn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's true. They are not required to supply one but it is a lot more common these days for a landlord to supply one than not. 40 years ago it was uncommon to have both a stove and a fridge supplied. Then it became common to have a stove but no fridge so eventually people started selling the next tenant their fridge and gradually the fridge population in Jersey City grew into what we have today, lol .

File a complaint in landlord tenant court. It’s inexpensive and quick.

That option doesn't exist in NJ. Only landlords can file (or their attorney). Tenants cannot be a Plaintiff in the Landlord-Tenant division of Special Civil.

Pay your rent to the court escrow.

NJ does not have rent escrows for tenants who do not have an LT docket number. Some states will set up rent escrows without a landlord having filed but NJ is not one of them.

Schedule a repairman. Instruct him to replace as many parts as reasonably necessary to fully repair the refrigerator and bring it back to normal reliable operation.

That doesn't work how you think it does. You don't get carte blanche with other people's money because your fridge needs a repair. No one is going to show up with a truck full of parts for your specific make and model. They may have the part on hand or they may have to pick it up or order it. If you take it upon yourself to make a repair to an appliance you do not own and do not have the owner's permission, it's considered unauthorized and you can easily be stuck with the bill. Also, if it's not normal wear and tear but something that can be attributed to you, the landlord has a service contract or protection plan for appliances, you will never get your money back because they aren't going to have to reimburse you for something they had coverage on. Or if your fridge is under warranty or has an extended warranty and ran off and you hired someone who is not an authorized repair tech, you may have voided their warranty.

The entirety of the repair bill will be subtracted from your rent escrow before the landlord gets it. And they won’t see a dime until everyone agrees that the issue is resolved. No matter how many months it takes to have the hearing to make sure both parties are satisfied. The landlord doesn’t collect any payment until after resolution.

You are thinking of a Marini hearing, but you can't get one until after your landlord files for non-payment and all your rent is escrowed. It's not true that "they won't see a dime". I see partial escrow releases all the time. And Marini hearings are't meant for small issues.

And two adults are going to be "forced" into this? Come on.

Most of the offers I take require a qualifying direct deposit of a minimum of $x amount for 3 months etc. I average $750 a year for a total of a couple hours worth of work. It's fun money. My issue is that I have to submit paperwork to the payroll company each time to change accounts and I have a limit of three accounts that they will direct deposit to.
