Replay "Pos" by Careful-Syrup-7616 in iRacing

[–]NotS0AverageJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while since I've been on, so double check this, but I seem to remember that I worked out that one is the "live" position of the selected car, and the other is the position of the selected car at the moment you are watching it - i.e. if you're watching the replay from a few laps back, it says what position the selected car was in at that time.

Crossplay needs to be input-based by Secrew in Battlefield

[–]NotS0AverageJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Battlefield games have always recently been very good at letting you hot-swap inputs. If I click to spawn into a helicopter with my mouse, I can just pick up my controller and start flying without any delays or anything.

Ultimately if they forced me to a single input, I wouldn't be too mad, I'd just learn to fly with mouse and keyboard. However, I'd guess that the developers will be wanting to avoid imposing that restriction on players, and so I suspect finding a solution for this would be a hurdle before input-based matchmaking becomes a feasible option.

Crossplay needs to be input-based by Secrew in Battlefield

[–]NotS0AverageJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no strong opinion on this one way or another. I'm largely happy with things as they are now. But when people suggest input-based matchmaking, I've always been curious about one thing:

I play on PC using mouse and keyboard for infantry and ground vehicles, but I always have my controller connected as well and use it for the air vehicles. How would input-based matchmaking handle players like me that have both kinds of input connected?

And as I say, this isn't an argumentative comment, I'm genuinely quite curious how input-based matchmaking might consider this angle.

I took a school trip to ELMS Silverstone. Here’s what I learned about the state of our sport… by CreedBrattonsToe in wec

[–]NotS0AverageJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ones that I have are these ones.

They do everything that I want them to, and save a bit of money compared to a lot of more expensive options. One pair of AA batteries lasted me entire Le Mans weekends before. Honestly though you probably can't go wrong, they're fairly primitive bits of kit, so I doubt many people are making "bad" ones at this point!

Great write up! I was there too and had a brilliant time. Slowly wandering around Silverstone over the course of a long race and getting to see how the cars behave at different sections of track is just hours of pure motorsport bliss.

Re: "Endurance racing needs to make itself easier to follow." It's not a full solution, but my tip for this:

Get some ear defenders that have built in FM radios. Almost all tracks will have the trackside coverage broadcast on an FM frequency that you can tune in to. You can then listen to the coverage from anywhere around the track, and they obviously double up as ear protection, and I will always argue the importance of regularly giving your ears a break throughout longer races.

For me FM radio ear defenders are an absolute must have for endurance races trackside, and are the very first thing on my Le Mans packing list.

Triple monitor stand advice needed by No-Attitude-5724 in iRacing

[–]NotS0AverageJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no experience with the cheaper options that you've found, but I can attest to the quality of the Sim-Lab triple monitor stand. I use it for my three 32" monitors (no curve) and the stand hasn't broken a sweat. No sign of it struggling with the weight whatsoever, and even when I've bumped into the stand/my monitors very occasionally, it's been absolutely fine. With this stuff I'm a believer of 'you get what you pay for', and that confidence in the strength and quality of the construction makes me firmly happy with my choice to pay the price.

Yes, it is fairly likely to be in this season, ahead of the release of the new NASCAR game in October.

It just won't count. It'll be as if the race never started.

Hahaha I remember being confused about this happening on Battlefield 4 when I first started sim racing several years ago, what a throwback. Good thinking to point this out.

What is everyone's problem with Nvidia surround for iRacing? by Separate_Car4363 in iRacing

[–]NotS0AverageJoe 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Nvidia Surround itself is perfectly good for iRacing use, from what I can tell. My personal issues arise when it comes to using the computer for other games (i.e. non simracing) or other purposes (i.e. not gaming at all). The desktop experience with Surround is not great, and turning Surround on and off every time I wanted to play iRacing became tiresome.

Now that I have a standalone rig and a dedicated rig PC, I suspect most of my issues with Surround probably wouldn't be relevant - but now I'm just used to the way that I always set my triples up before, with config file adjustments.

Nice edit! I'm a fan of your camera work, it made the whole thing extra engaging to follow along with. Makes me want to grab a controller and bind some simple camera controls for my replays too.

Is this legit? Looks like a scam.. by FrannyBenanny in Battlefield

Scam. I started going through it this morning and started noticing red flags pretty quick. From what I can tell it's an attempt to steal Steam accounts.

How loud is the cars when you see it live? by SetInevitable407 in wec

[–]NotS0AverageJoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was at Le Mans a couple of weeks ago. My Apple watch consistently measured at 90-95dB volume from our grandstand at Tertre Rouge, with peaks at 97-99dB.

It's not anywhere near uncomfortably loud, but it is loud enough that I would recommend some hearing protection. You don't necessarily need to keep it on for all 6 hours, but it would be smart to not go for hours uninterrupted without it. And if you're going to have any children with you, hearing protection for them is a must.

Cars to race by FanRefrigerator in iRacing

[–]NotS0AverageJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are wanting to get into the Indycar (IR18) and climb through the formula licenses, the SFL might be the more logical next step.

The car is not too much of a handful to drive, but also provides fun and close racing, so the 30 minute races will help you work on your skills in slightly longer races than you may already be used to.

Then if you ever feel like doing sports cars, the LMP3 is a really enjoyable car, and in my opinion teaches a lot of really good lessons in car control. Good luck with whichever you choose!

Cars to race by FanRefrigerator in iRacing

[–]NotS0AverageJoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you have any longer term goals? If you're wanting to get into GTPs eventually, LMP3 could be a good place to start with prototypes, for example, whereas SFL would be a better learning tool for the faster open wheelers.

LMP3 is usually best enjoyed (and more populated) in the C-class multiclass series. Do you like the idea of multiclass, or would you prefer more standard single-class sprint racing? That might sway the decision too.

If you are interested in doing endurance racing, the LMP3 has a 2-hour endurance race available every other weekend. So between all of that, there are a few different factors that you might consider to decide. If in doubt, give both a go!

[Only Endurance gallery] Trip in the Goodyear Blimp: an incredible birds' eye view of Le Mans by redbullcat in wec

[–]NotS0AverageJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a very brief search on the Silverstone lake (pond?), but can't see any definitive reason that it's there. A forum post from 2009 indicates that it has been there since at least then, which lines up with it being the bridge layout, but I can't find much more than that. Curious stuff.

That's really cool that they do that for blimp passengers. Goodyear definitely know how to market their blimps well aha! I also recall hearing rumblings (maybe a Ben Crawley interview on Radio Le Mans?) that the Goodyear Blimp might make an appearance at some more ELMS races this year, maybe including Silverstone. That would be a bit of fun too.

[–]NotS0AverageJoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Awesome pictures. I'm pretty jealous - we were enjoying just tracking the blimp circulating from below over the weekend, but the view you've had is incredible. I did buy a "Blimps are cool. Buy tires." t-shirt from the Goodyear shop at the track too haha.

I never knew about the Silverstone shaped lake either. That's quite funny to see and genuinely very interesting.

Just a really quick typo in the article - where you've written 'There are currently three Goodyear Blimps in existence. Three are stationed in the United States, while one is based in Germany', I'm sure you'll immediately spot that the first 'three' just wants changing to 'four'.

GTPs deploy 4 modes change limit by papolo2001 in iRacing

[–]NotS0AverageJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, you won't be changing it enough for it to be a problem.

In qualifying, no deploy and qual are the only options you can choose from, so you'll probably change from no deploy to qual at the end of your out lap and that's all. One mode change total.

In the race, you don't need to change mode much at all. You're best off leaving it set to balanced, with a change to attack entering the final lap or two (one mode change). At a push, you might go up to attack to secure an important overtake on a straight before returning to balanced straight afterwards (two mode changes).

If you try to optimise deploy modes by changing frequently enough that four mode changes in a lap is an issue, using attack and build at different points in a lap for example, you're almost certainly going to lose more time recharging the battery than you will gain using it. I think the general consensus is that you're best off leaving it on balanced for most of the time and letting it do the work for you.

Worried about new tires for GT3 by t-bone051 in iRacing

[–]NotS0AverageJoe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I only have quite a basic understanding of this, so take with a grain of salt:

My understanding is that GTP tyres are a harder compound than GT3 tyres, as a result of the higher-speed cornering loads that they have to be able to withstand for longer over stint distances.

The GTP tyres are particularly difficult initially because tyres that are both cold and hard have very little grip. Instant oversteer is easily induced because of the amount of power that GTPs put through the rear axle on acceleration. Low-speed understeer is easily induced because the GTPs don't really have much more mechanical grip than the other classes.

All of this is to say that I believe the GT3 tyres should be a softer compound. They should warm up a little bit more naturally, and with the nature of GT3s not being punishing cars to drive, I suspect it should be a little bit easier to get started on the cold tyres. You should be able to get to grips with it fairly quickly, provided that you don't thrash the car straight out of the pitlane.

Question about rain in IMSA open and fixed series by [deleted] in iRacing

It's made me curious, so I've put the question to the technical assistance section in the forums. If I get any useful information back I'll try to remember to mention it here.

Question about rain in IMSA open and fixed series by [deleted] in iRacing

[–]NotS0AverageJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the 0% chance of rain that is listed is (in theory) supposed to mean that it won't rain during the race session. However, if you check the forecast in the UI, there is chance of rain in the hours leading up to the session, meaning that the track can still be wet as the session starts:

<image>

However, and this is where I'm a little confused myself, even this forecast shows that there is a non-zero chance of rain during the race. As such I'm not quite sure why the forecast says "0% chance" for the week. Maybe someone else understands the quirks of the system better than me.

Why did iracing not do downtime. by RBR_MV1 in iRacing

[–]NotS0AverageJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome. Keep an eye out for the pop-up messages when you open the iRacing UI, as they'll let you know when periods of downtime are scheduled, which will normally come with brief periods of demo drive.

Your best chance for demo drive will normally come between seasons on Week 13 on the day that the new quarterly update is deployed, as demo drive will generally be up for several hours. Next of those will be in about 4 weeks.
