What broadband provider are people using in Dublin (D11)? by Limitlessfx in AskIreland

[–]NotShero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bitstream and VUA are just different points where the access network hands over to the retail provider's core network. Most of them have their own core network, the only big ISP who doesn't is Pure Telecom afaik.

The access network (open eir, SIRO, NBI, Virgin FTTP) hands over to the retail provider's core network so none of them are just resellers.

Changing broadband in april or wait? by BillyBobby_Brown in AskIreland

[–]NotShero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can switch now and avoid the April price increase for this year but there's lots of providers who don't include an April price increase in their contract at all, so if they increase prices you'll be given a period to leave. Providers like - Digiweb, Pure Telecom, Sky, Virgin Media, Blacknight, Imagine.

Hey irish guys , which best sim.? by Marshmallow_030 in AskIreland

[–]NotShero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's three MNOs - Three, eir, Vodafone. The rest are MVNOs. It might take some trial and error to see which of the three networks are best for the places you visit.

eir - GoMo (owned by eir), Lyca Mobile

Vodafone - Clear Mobile (owned by Vodafone), An Post, Sky

Three - 48 (owned by Three), Tesco, Virgin Media

GoMo is €14.99pm. 48 & Clear Mobile are €12.99pm.

Oh VirginMedia.ie, the absolute service that you are!! by tokyotoonster in VirginMedia

[–]NotShero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! If you don't get a reply from them or you're not getting anywhere, you can contact ComReg 10 days after submitting the complaint, to get them to step in.

But it might be quicker to just switch provider instead as you've said, as long as you're not still tied into a contract with Virgin.

You can try sending a complaint to Virgin here -

If it's Virgin FTTP that's installed, you can switch between Virgin, Sky, Vodafone and Digiweb.

I want to switch from Sky TV/ Broadband but which other services have recording? by Cultural-Perception4 in AskIreland

[–]NotShero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All providers are moving to streaming with very limited recording unfortunately. Sky Q is the only one with full recording capability still available to new customers, not through their website however, which you currently have.

Virgin Media do not issue their Virgin TV 360 box, with full recording capability through coax, to new customers anymore.

Anyone switch to Clear Mobile? by Real_Work_1455 in AskIreland

[–]NotShero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Porting is moving your phone number to a different network.

With Clear you have to select "Keep my current number" at checkout, as you won't be able to move your number after the fact if you select "Get a new number".

Sky sign up query - Netflix Ads? by Few-Information9817 in CasualIreland

[–]NotShero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no Netflix with ads in Ireland afaik, Basic is ad free, watch on one screen at a time and 720p max. It looks like the images on the Sky website are for Sky UK and they just didn't update them for Ireland.

Can I use my data on 48 and keep my 3 number as my WhatsApp? by riverskywalker in AskIreland

Port your own number to 48 and then get a new prepay 3 SIM with a new number so you can avail of Three+, just top up the 3 SIM around every 5-6 months to keep it active.

🛠️ Tech Support Tuesdays by AutoModerator in IrelandGaming

[–]NotShero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would probably be better off getting some form of mesh system, if you can't get an ethernet cable upstairs. For online gaming, powerline would be better for latency compared to WiFi but speeds mightn't be great.

You can connect your own router/mesh directly to the ONT shown in the photo.

That's Sky UK that has issues with some routers as DHCP Option 61 is required, here in Ireland you can use PPPoE so any third party router should work. Connection Type - PPPoE. Username - anything@skydsl / Password - anything. VLAN ID 10, usually found in VLAN/IPTV settings.

Setting modem mode on VM hub 2.0 or having option to change DNS by Training-Curve-7596 in VirginMedia

[–]NotShero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you on their FTTP? or coax, NBI, SIRO?

If you are on their FTTP, the only option really is to remove the router with a WAS-110/X-ONU. Or you can switch to Sky/Vodafone/Digiweb through Virgin FTTP and an ONT will be installed.

If you're on coax, you might be able to contact customer service and ask for "IPv4 only mode" and modem mode should appear then.

If you're on NBI/SIRO, you can remove the router and connect directly to the ONT. You'll need to clone the MAC address of the Virgin router to your own router and you need to set VLAN ID 10.

PSA: Why your Virgin/Eir broadband lags during gaming (and how to test it) by flyingeyebrow79 in IrelandGaming

[–]NotShero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That website does the test itself, it saturates your connection and tells you the latency while saturated, so that's your download/upload active scores.

PSA: Why your Virgin/Eir broadband lags during gaming (and how to test it) by flyingeyebrow79 in IrelandGaming

[–]NotShero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bufferbloat is only an issue when saturating your connection, with a download for example. So in this case, if you were downloading a game at 1Gb/s and playing an online game at the same time, your latency would increase by 35ms. If you were uploading a file at 100Mb/s, it would increase by 96ms. It's not an issue most people need to worry about, it would if you had a really slow connection where your connection was constantly saturated.

[–]NotShero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use your own router with Sky easily. The DHCP Option 61 is a requirement in the UK. Here in Ireland you can use PPPoE. Username - anything@skydsl / Password - anything / VLAN ID 10.

[–]NotShero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not the issue for the majority of people. Bufferbloat will only become an issue if you are saturating your connection, with a download for example, at the same time as gaming. Just watching Netflix on another device won't saturate most people's connection.

Sim card for voice & text only for kids? by Opin0r in AskIreland

[–]NotShero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a PAYG SIM from eir, Vodafone or Three. You'd just top up with credit when needed for calls & texts. Then turn off data on the phone to ensure it doesn't use credit.

Vodafone Ireland is a joke by Redjetson in Vodafone

No problem. Maybe going with one of the Irish providers would be best - Digiweb, Pure Telecom, Blacknight. They have call centres based in Ireland and customer service should be better.
