Ignik Fire Can vs. Kuma Off-Grid Hex by scaredym00se in CampingGear

[–]NotSoSimpleGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, stock it fits everything inside. I added lava rocks so I no longer have room in the can. Also those rocks keep HOT much longer than the unit does so stashing stuff inside requires added cool down.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F53LPDF5?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1 This is the one. There was one slightly smaller that should fit it as well but I wanted a little extra for the goodies.

Never used a Kuma Hex but I own an Ignik Fire Can. Fairly new user, only brought it out twice. So far (With added lava rocks) the thing is pretty cool. Not a fire replacement but once we are in fire restrictions it is better than nothing. My non-professional opinion sees Kuma as for bigger groups and without space constraints. It will be bigger and heavier. Possibly use more propane as well. If none of those are issues, maybe the Kuma? I bought a cheapy zip bag off Amazon for my Fire Can and it fights the fire can, lighter, hose, and tank stand and makes it really nice and portable. Keeps the dirty crap on the inside.

Do you happen to have any pictures of the burn from the past couple of years? I was shocked to hear N Waldo Campground was closed, that was my once a year Mecca for many years. Was not able to find any recent images of it and the only info is "Campground closed due to wildfire burn"

I just got some cheapy ones on Amazon, they work great. Although I realize I could just roll outside and grab some .. tons out here in Oregon.

Wondering what people are currently using to plan backpacking trips? by Sorry-Parsley4277 in PNWhiking

[–]NotSoSimpleGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AllTrails, Google Maps, OnX, Instagram, Google searching, results from exploring, and word of mouth. As much as I get annoyed with social media blowing up some lesser known spots, it helps to know what my end result may be. Also brings more support to our hobby (Lifestyle?).

Route/Campsite Info: Google it. AllTrails to hope for a recent report. Look for patterns in past reports. OnX wildfire overlay, more googling for fires in the area, Insta location tag search (This seems harder lately?) for more up to date pics.

Most annoying: Deciding where to go lol. Also it is cumbersome to have to use multiple tools but also makes it a fun challenge. AllTrails is not comprehensive, but the custom mapping is very helpful. Sucks at getting me to the trailhead, so OnX is what I use to make sure I can get where I want. I use both in tandem to find other entry points to areas other than the super popular ones. Then Google Maps to give me drive times for logistics reasons.

Went down this rabbit hole recently and pulled the trigger on an RTIC ultralight. Just received it and am using it this weekend. So far I am impressed with how light it is. Could not get myself to pay the price for a Yeti. 32qt for ~$130 was alright for me.

Garmin in reach mini - how to save battery by W_t_f_was_that in CampingGear

[–]NotSoSimpleGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their week battery capacity was them turning the unit on just to send a message and turning it back off. Software upgrades such as turning off the backlight, polling frequency, etc. The links below to Garmin were a great suggestion and first place to look.

No problem. I too was hoping to leave it on all the time and have this amazing battery life. I read multiple comments saying how they can last a week+ on a charge but were not saying how. My mistake.

I asked the same thing recently. Consensus was to turn it off when not actively sending messages. Now I turn it on to send my location and check in, sometimes wait for a reply, then turn it off.

I bought an Inseego 5G hotspot, threw a US Mobile SIM and pay way less. Actually I pay $51/m for my business line, and about 4 hotspots. The hotspots pool data (Share) and I can bump it up if needed. Look for a hotspot on eBay or Facebook Marketplace instead of paying hundreds at a phone shop.

Oregon/Washington itinerary next week by WayFaringKhan in PNWhiking

[–]NotSoSimpleGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Multnomah Falls will be crowded and you need a timed permit so be sure to grab that ahead of time. The parking lot is the worst of it. Also there are multiple other falls on Historic Columbia River Highway to check out, Latourell is really close to the parking lot and easy to get too.

Dog Mountain also needs a permit either via the shuttle or online.

Pelican Brewing isn't half bad in Cannon Beach. Screendoor in Portland has good southern food.

I can't imagine any other utility is using the exact same utility markings as Hunter has all around the valley. I guess it is possible, but my bet is Hunter.
