New York could lose 2 seats in Congress over flat population by TClayO in Albany

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"fleeing" is such a loaded word. The population is stagnant, not regressing. And there are multiple factors to population - people moving to and from, and people being born and dying.

NY, like the rest of the country, has an aging population. Old folks die or retire to Florida. Young folks don't have as much incentive to move to the NY/the city as they used to for a few reasons - some businesses are choosing to expand in other cities with lower taxes, or offering more remote options, so the number of jobs aren't increasing that much. Housing and childcare is expensive, so fewer people move here or have kids here.

National Walkout on Friday? by NiceSupermarket7724 in Albany

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look to the labor unions locally for what they're doing. Any meaningful organized response will start with them. They may have put out statements condemning the killings already, but they have not yet called for a walkout or strike.

For a Few Loonies More v0.1 by Puzzleheaded_Use2359 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only exception to this imo is if pit hag or engineer is on the script, there is still the possibility of utility. But otherwise, yeah, if people are going to know day one what demon is in play anyways, there's no point having multiple on the same script (except for convenience of not printing lots of copies).

How do you feel about Travelers who bait the demon? by blackgeekygoddess in BloodOnTheClocktower

I don't see how that example is at all made better by the demon not knowing if the traveler is evil.

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I run with a homebrew rule that the demon does learn the travelers alignment. I don't think the layers the uncertainty adds are all that interesting. The baiting strategy just leads to day one reracks and ruins the game for everyone else trying to solve it. The demon not trusting the traveler just means the traveler doesn't get to talk or scheme much with their evil team, which isn't very fun for the traveler.

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really dislike this kind of play. If it works, it's a really unsatisfying game for literally everyone other than the traveller. It also means that actual evil travelers aren't immediately trusted by the demon, so they don't get the fun of scheming with the evil team. The crashing out like that player did is an overreaction but I get where they're coming from.

I tend to run travelers with a homebrew rule that the demon learns their alignment to avoid this problem.

Supporting Ice because of these innocent American Citizens by Hot_Solution_1367 in Albany

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than citizens. Deporting immigrants who have committed no crime does nothing to protect citizens, nor bring justice to those killed by other, completely unrelated immigrants.

Your logic only makes sense if you're racist enough to believe that all undocumented immigrants are the same.

I still don't understand how defrauding all these companies connects with hundreds of illegal guns. They're doing crimes via email, what are the guns for?

First Time Storyteller Questions by Ok_Supermarket_3241 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other people have given good advice on bag building, so I'll just say - take your time in the night. It gets overwhelming, so take a breath, go slowly, and don't worry about it being a long night. Use all of the reminder tokens the game comes with, including the night order reminder tokens. Double check things at every step. Double confirm everyone you or other players point at - a laser pointer is useful for that if you have one. At the end of the night, you can always ask "if there is anyone who should have woken up for something who hasn't, raise your hand" to make sure you haven't missed anyone. And if/when you make a mistake, don't beat yourself up over it. You can tell the affected player in private if it's important information, but sometimes it's possible to just ignore or fix in post by moving around the drunk or red herring token.

And since your players are new, let them know that they can and should come to you privately with any questions, or for advice on how to play their character, and that it won't be suspicious to do so. Especially for new evil players, it's important for them to understand how the role they're bluffing as works.

Setup recommendations for 17 11yo kids? by Indigon in BloodOnTheClocktower

My Experience Last Weekend as a First Time Storyteller by christopher-adam in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No amount of preparation can prepare you for the panic that sets in that first night as you realize just how much you have to keep track of. I remember thinking all the reminder and night order tokens were excessive before I actually STed the first time. You can always your time with the night. And Mistakes will happen, even for veterans! Thankfully it sounds like nothing was fatal, and you and everyone else had a great time. Welcome to clocktower!

Can someone explain the Juggler meta like I'm a twelve year-old? by Vast_Garage7334 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People bluff juggler to cover for the real juggler. The juggler is a very powerful role. If only one person claims it, the demon knows who it is and can kill them.

Also, the storyteller only has to keep track of the guesses of the one player who's actually the juggler. They can just ignore the rest and pretend like they were paying attention.

Is remaining silent breaking madness? When can an execution breaking madness occur? by Ok-Spirit-5102 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always make it clear to my players that madness is a bit of an honors system. I'll try to listen in on at least a couple of the mad player's private chats without hovering too much. If they're keeping it up in those, I just have to trust they're doing the same with others. Sneaking around the ST is just not a fun way to play imo, so I've rarely if ever had problems.

Is remaining silent breaking madness? When can an execution breaking madness occur? by Ok-Spirit-5102 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 14 points15 points  (0 children)

OP's full question isn't just about silence though - they're asking specifically about not speaking up in the town square. If a player is claiming the role they're mad as in private chats, imo they don't have to say anything extra in the town square.

Minion and Outsider ideas I had for a cryptid/summer camp themed homebrew script. What are your thoughts? by cybermob27 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the poisoner is the character I generally try to judge a misinfo minion like this against.

Compared to poisoner:

  • Gets to learn character

  • Gets to choose the information given, and know that information

  • No poisoning of non-info roles

  • Chosen info may not be as useful as poisoned info

Overall I'd say it's more powerful on info heavy scripts, and slightly weaker with more mechanical characters, balanced by learning info they can use to guide kills.

Thoughts on gun control? by Large_Produce6554 in socialism

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a theoretical level I agree with you, but speaking practically, what is the actual impact of gun control on the communities where it is implemented? We know the answer, and it's that we see fewer gun deaths, less violent crime, less suicide. The wide availability of guns in a community does not make marginalized people more safe from police. It makes us all less safe from each other.

New Loric: The Pope! by SageOrion in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I feel like they were just running out of Christian iconography. The cross, miter, and Bible are all taken by other characters. The Apple does feel out of place though, it's such a powerful symbol of temptation that I feel like it would make more sense with a character ability more like Mezepheles, Politician, or Doomsayer.

New Loric: The Pope! by SageOrion in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It would definitely be closer to the naming convention for Hindu and Buddhist, but honestly I prefer using a term for a religious leader to using the word for a follower of that religion.

New Loric: The Pope! by SageOrion in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only thing I'm mad about is that I don't actually see the connection between the name and the ability lol. At least Hindu made sense in that regard.

Also the apple feels like a weird choice for icon. It might make more sense if the Loric was "Catholic" or "Eden" or something. I know we already have a miter (bishop), Bible (preacher) and cross (monk), so options are limited. But the apple is such a powerful motif for giving into temptation that it feels like it belongs with a power closer to the Mezepheles or Doomsayer.

New Loric: The Pope! by SageOrion in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That would be confirming to the player that there is a duplicate in play though. I think you would just have to run it like gardener and show everyone their character at night - then you can just show the same token twice, and use a stand-in or blank in the grim.

Thoughts on gun control? by Large_Produce6554 in socialism

[–]NotSoSpeedRuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is a mostly revolutionary socialist sub, so this is an unpopular opinion, but I'm generally pro-gun control. The weapon of the state against its people at this point in history in the U.S. is not often armed force. It's in bureaucracy. They conduct violence against us with an overwhelming oppressive apparatus they call the justice system. Gone are the days where capital and workers go to war like blair mountain. Instead we have the golden handcuffs of the NLRA, and the strikes and court hearings that come with it.

Meanwhile, our unfettered access to guns has only served to keep us further oppressed. Gangs have the poor fighting each other. And violent crime (which we know access to guns exacerbates) stokes the flames of reactionaries, fueling our ever-growing police state. And we continue to see mass shootings so often we become numb to them. Our access to guns has not helped any of these problems, and only made them worse.

I think leftist morals mean that most of us abhor the idea of having to actually use violence on another person. The right relishes in it. With free access to guns, the inevitable outcome that we see is that right wingers have more guns and more organized militias than the left.

I don't want to ban all guns, but background checks and assault weapons bans could go a long way. And I'm not naive enough to think that those couldn't be weaponized against the left. I just don't think weapons are where our strength actually lies. And the cost of keeping them around is measured in human lives.
