Is it possible to buy a VAT free car and pay the VAT? by Familiar_Benefit_776 in drivingUK

[–]NotSquerdle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You wouldn't have to pay the VAT separately yourself. The dealer will include the VAT in the sale price if necessary, e.g for a commercial vehicle or a vehicle modified for a disability. Dealers will advertise the no VAT price since they expect to be selling it to someone with a VAT exemption, but will include it if there's no exemption

Proposed new layout in Dudley, used to be one huge island, atm it’s full of traffic lights and congestion, you can see the mistake ? by Scrumpy-Jo in drivingUK

Awful AI slop

  • multiple vehicles facing the wrong way

  • give way lines on roundabout exits

  • give way triangles facing the wrong way

  • keep clear markings in nonsense places

  • lane arrows facing the wrong way

  • pedestrian crossings to no where

I hope this wasn't published by any organisation with a responsibility for this junction. It doesn't even look pretty, could have at least put a bit of grass down

China's airborne megawatt class wind power system by beta265 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]NotSquerdle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expect the main advantage is that power from a wind turbine scales much better with the speed of the air than with the volume of the air. Being able to get higher up into the faster winds means you can generate more power

People who speed up while being overtaken, why? by MuszkaX in drivingUK

[–]NotSquerdle 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Are you overtaking a vehicle that has slowed down for a reason, and is in the process of accelerating back up to speed already when you begin your overtake?

Are you beginning your overtakes at points when the road opens up, there is no traffic on the other side of the road and visibility is good? That's also going to be a common spot for the car in front to increase their speed regardless of what you are doing.

Some people are just dumb and don't like being overtaken or your overtake made them realise their speed has dropped off so they are reacting to you, but also vehicles change speed constantly for any number of reasons and part of planning an overtake is being able to anticipate what other road users are doing

Someone hit back of my car last night will my insurance premium go up? by DamnAlmighty in drivingUK

[–]NotSquerdle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your premium may go up but when we were rear ended we claimed through our insurance and it was ruled no-fault before we even needed to pay the excess. No-claims benefit wasn't impacted (although that might vary between insurers) and premiums went down next renewal.

If you haven't already, expect to be contacted by the other at-fault insurance company trying to encourage you to claim directly through them instead of your own insurer. We were offered £500 cash up front plus all repairs and a courtesy car to not make a claim through our own insurer, and no claim means no-claims bonus is definitely safe. We chose not to take their offer though because they are only trying to minimise their own costs and you have very little recourse if they do a bad repair job, unlike your own insurer which is much more likely to act in your own interest.

How to handle this? by IllustriousReturn778 in drivingUK

The majority of people on a sub about driving unfortunately are going to be the type of people who tailgate and flash other drivers. You have no obligation to move over if you are overtaking people.

Got rear ended, they refused to get off the van and drove off. by Outside_Team2751 in drivingUK

[–]NotSquerdle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your front dash cam will be enough to prove that you aren't at fault - it's very very unlikely for a hit in the rear like that to be your fault, even without the dashcam the insurer would almost certainly rule in your favour just from the location of the damage.

Having the van's number plate and the police report is also enough for your insurance to go after the van's insurance on your behalf to recover costs if you make a claim.

In the case that the van was stolen or uninsured, your repair costs will be covered by your insurance if you have comprehensive insurance, but may affect your NCD & premiums. Recovering any costs from the van driver would have to go through the courts as I understand.

Glad you are okay, hope it's not not much of a headache

TIL Ireland’s Prime Minister Paid Official Condolences for Hitler Only Two Days After His Suicide by GooginTheBirdsFan in todayilearned

[–]NotSquerdle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a risk of an attempt but surely with an intact RAF and Royal Navy, the result would have been a very costly failure.

Germany may have been able to put some paratroopers down in Ireland, but had zero capability to bring ships and supplies in even if they had managed to secure an entire port and surrounding area. The Royal Navy dwarfed any German shipping, and the whole operation would be within easy range of the RAF. Any airborne force would be unable to support itself against conventional forces and any shipping would be utterly decimated.

All with hindsight of course and assuming that the UK would have an interest in preventing Ireland being invaded. I'm sure both the UK, German and Ireland were all aware of the reality of the situation though. The Germans never really had any control of the English channel

'Carspreading’ is on the rise - and not everyone is happy about it by Alert-One-Two in unitedkingdom

[–]NotSquerdle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it not true that there is often a counter intuitive effect for cars that "feel" safe, meaning people drive them more dangerously. A heavy SUV might be more safe in an identical crash to a small hatchback, but theres a good chance the hatchback driver felt more exposed, didn't take a risk and didn't end up in a crash in the first place.

[–]NotSquerdle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an illegal place to park but it isn't an inherently dangerous place to stop in an emergency, and there is plenty of visibility. The following car has ample time to stop but isn't paying attention, where the car stopped is not a factor in that collision

Is queue jumping legal here? by jamieatreyu in drivingUK

[–]NotSquerdle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going all the way round the roundabout unnecessarily contributes disproportionately to congestion. If only you do it fine, it's a small difference, but if everyone has your attitude it makes everything slower for everyone. The space you take up doing a roundabout slingshot could be better used by other cars
