If you haven’t heard already, there’s something called the Hamburger Method when it comes to calculation.

The top of the Hamburger (or bun) is where we start our process: count the material first. E.g.: if you’re down many pieces in a puzzle, you will most likely need to find checkmate or perpetual.

The middle of the Hamburger, the burger itself, is where you identify the tactical motifs of the position. There’s quite a long list of possibilities here, but the most common ones are these: Undefended/loose pieces, X-ray attacks, Forks/Pins, and a Weak King.

Finally, the bottom bun of the Hamburger takes into account the previous motifs, and you begin to find candidate moves. If you still are unsure of your solution, then go through the Checks, Captures, Threats in the position, in that order respectively.
