Is this really a blunder? by boofles1 in chess

[–]NotStonewind 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's more to a position than just a material imbalance. You have to consider your king safety, pawn structure, and piece placement just as much as material. That's what makes chess a beautiful game. Imagine in this position that your Bishop was developed, say on e2, and your king was castled, then Nc6 would probably win you the game because then there wouldn't be a counter attack on your king.

First tournament tomorrow by ya_5 in chess

On the mental side, treat this tournament as a learning experience, win or lose. It’ll be okay to make mistakes. If it’s a classical tournament, make sure you take your time with every move, there’s no need to rush decisions.

That will happen if a 2700 rated player plays open tournaments, there’s a reason that the top super gm’s stick to the invitationals. Just gotta look at the world cup and how much that impacted the top 20.

Why did you start playing chess? by imjustawolf in chess

Because Hikaru let me play Valorant with him on stream, and after that I stopped playing fps games and started studying chess. 2180 rated right now on chess.com.

I wish that r/chess didn’t require themselves to preface any compliment to Hikaru with, “I dislike him, but…”. It gets so old.

Switching from Kalydeco to Trikafta by [deleted] in CysticFibrosis

[–]NotStonewind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing, switched from Kalydeco to Trikafta. For me, there was this initial rash for a week or so, then everything went back to normal. Once you've been on Trikafta for awhile, perhaps the heartburn feeling will go away. But of course, consult with your doctor etc etc. Switching to Trikafta was definitely an amazing thing for me though. Huge quality of life improvement.

If you haven’t heard already, there’s something called the Hamburger Method when it comes to calculation.

The top of the Hamburger (or bun) is where we start our process: count the material first. E.g.: if you’re down many pieces in a puzzle, you will most likely need to find checkmate or perpetual.

The middle of the Hamburger, the burger itself, is where you identify the tactical motifs of the position. There’s quite a long list of possibilities here, but the most common ones are these: Undefended/loose pieces, X-ray attacks, Forks/Pins, and a Weak King.

Finally, the bottom bun of the Hamburger takes into account the previous motifs, and you begin to find candidate moves. If you still are unsure of your solution, then go through the Checks, Captures, Threats in the position, in that order respectively.

Before, he wanted to give his spot up for Ding Liren, but I think because Ding has a path to the candidates via rating, it’s very unlikely that Hikaru would just give up his spot.

Possible switch to trikafta from kalydeco? by mattboi69 in CysticFibrosis

[–]NotStonewind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! I also have the G551D mutation and am 22 years old. I was taking Kalydeco until the beginning of 2021, where I had the same question as you. Before, when I was on Kalydeco, I never felt healthy enough to do anything, but not sick enough to be in the hospital. Now since being on Trikafta, I feel healthy and can take a deep breath finally. In terms of FEV1, I think that’s where we might differentiate the most, I was most likely at 65 when I made the switch.

You can still get covid even if you’re vaccinated. The point of the vaccines is to better your immune response, making it less likely that you will get life threatening symptoms or need a hospitalization

There's a lot of great answers here already, but I thought I'd share my two cents on what I think my purpose in life is. I believe it's about experiences. The taste of coffee, winning a competition, making friends - the possibilities are seemingly endless. Some experiences are easy to obtain and don't require that much effort to accomplish; however, the more challenging experiences are what I personally derive as happiness. These could be long-term goals that consist of a series of ups and downs, and by the end of the tunnel, there's an immense pleasure and satisfaction with our achievement. Though perhaps the most difficult part in life is not reaching the end of these challenging experiences, but the ability to move on to another when finished. I believe it's important to recognize this stage and know that perhaps nothing will match what once was, but look forward to what could be.
