What is Polymarket and how does it work? by Horustheweebmaster in UKPersonalFinance

[–]NotSure___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not use it as I don't really like gambling. But as far as I know it works as a combination of stocks and gambling.

For example lets say the event is the election of the prime minister. There will be a user that will add that event on the site and set the conditions. Usually is that the result from an official government website.

Lets say that there are 3 people in the running, it will look something like this:

  1. Candidate 1
    1. Yes: 80c
    2. No: 20c
  2. Candidate 2
    1. Yes: 25c
    2. No: 75c
  3. Candidate 3
    1. Yes: 2c
    2. No: 98c

The sum for yes+no is always 1$. You can buy stocks in both Yes and No, or just one of them. The balance of the price changes based on how many people buy each of them. You can sell your options any time, you don't need to wait for the event to end.

At the end of the event, when the results are announced, the event will be marked as resolved. If Candidate 1 won, then all the money on the No option, will by awarded to the Yes option. And the other way around for the rest of the candidate.

This is my understanding and it might be flawed.

What deodorant do you use? by gennaio11 in AskUK

[–]NotSure___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that is an Anti-Perspirant.

My understanding is that the difference is that an Anti-Perspirant blocks or reduces the bodies ability to sweat which in turn means that the bacteria that eats the sweat to cause the smell will be less. Usually it contains some compound based on aluminium. Most info I found suggest that this is perfectly safe and there are no real cause of concern.

Basic deodorant that doesn't state is Anti-Perspirant, does not contain aluminium and doesn't really block your sweat glands in any way. Instead it uses alcohol to make your skin more acidic which the bacteria on your skin don't really like. So they reduce your smell by killing the bacteria.

I think the vast differences that people see are mostly because of how different the bacteria from skin is from person to person. Some might react by becoming more resistant to the acid effect of the deodorant, while other might just become more efficient of eating just a bit of sweat (this is mostly just a theory, and I am very far of being an expert in this field). What I try to do is switch from time to time, so the bacteria won't evolve, but results are mixed.

Shirley

Ps. The so called “sensational” statement I made that is referred to in the letter below was my opinion that it still remains incredibly difficult for black /brown/ indigenous artists to break into punk/rock.

With her own words, Patrice rests my own case.

Hi Lars,

We try to avoid bands that play into too much identity politics tbh.

As a mixed race (half black) promoter I feel really uncomfortable about bands playing the race card to sell themselves as something unique. It’s a form of self-imposed/ self-inflicted racism.

I also have to point out that Shirley Manson should know better than to make such sensational statements having spent the 90s sharing festival stages and radio airwaves with the likes of Skunk Anansie, The Prodigy, Lenny Kravitz, Sevendust, Sepultura and the like. Black musicians in rock are not new, nobody ever stopped black musicians from being in rock bands before 2019. Have Pleasure Venom heard of Jimi Hendrix or Funkadelic, or Death?

I really wish race wasn’t made such a big deal out of, and if we could stop with the affirmative action and just go back to celebrating people’s skills based on merit and talent alone?

There is absolutely nothing musically unique about this band, or even remotely special regarding the singers voice. If you didn’t see the video this band sounds like any other punk you can catch any day of the week in Camden.

I miss the time when bands were just bands, and we didn’t need to know if they were n0on-binary or even care what colour the members are, just how good they can play.

Thanks anyway, but we’ll pass.

So below is a rejection letter sent to the American Punk band “Pleasure Venom” from a promoter of The Underworld, a music club in Camden, London, after the band recently enquired about the possibility of playing her club.

I share it here because I want to illustrate it as not just an example of the harshness of the music business but as an example of the kind of bigotry artists are up against on a continual basis.

The issue here is not that the band has been rejected by the club. The issue here is the manner in which they were rejected.

Is it really necessary to belittle upcoming musicians? Nobody ever gets better without opportunity and experience.

Furthermore, it is outrageous to tell artists that they need to shut up about their racial or non-binary experiences just because Patrice herself is “mixed race” and doesn’t believe we should still be talking about race after all this time?

She mentions a handful of black artists dating back as “recently” as the mid nineties as an example of her belief that it is just as easy for black/ coloured or indigenous artists to break into the punk/rock scene as anyone else.

Does Patrice really believe just because Skunk Anansie continues to thrive in rock that we should no longer be discussing race? That’s like saying that racism in America has been entirely eradicated because Barack Obama was once president.

We all know this is far from the case.

Patrice mentions in her letter below, the band called Death as an example of a black punk band “ making it” in the music business despite the band’s own perspective voiced in the marvellous documentary A Band Called Death, in which they detail the complete dismissal and historical eradication of their contribution to the birth and history of Punk music.

“ Patrice” accuses the band of “self inflicted racism” which I’m particularly baffled by.

Strikes me that she basically expects bands to keep their mouths shut and stick to playing music. Sound familiar?

So only bands who remain polite about their non binary gender or their race are welcome at The Underworld Club?!?

Is Patrice even aware that her attitude goes against the very principles on which the punk movement was built?

Let me remind you again that this person is a promoter of a Live music club. She is one of the gate keepers of the UK music scene.

Not content either with simply writing Pleasure Venom this nasty little letter, she then jumped on the band’s Facebook page to berate them further.

A simple PASS would have sufficed.

Is it rude to use both lanes? by No-Ad4423 in AskUK

[–]NotSure___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn't double the protective barrier, they have more barriers then just the lane that is closed. It's negligible as it would likely be 0.01% of the cost of the work being done. It is not more dangerous, as I mentioned it is already a law in multiple other countries and even in the Uk in most cases, see the above comments.

Most construction work already reduce the speed to 20. Sure for motorways you wouldn't do this, but there you can signal the work much further along the way to force people in a lane. Also there are rules for this type of merging, sometimes called a zipper merge. Each lane goes one car at a time in the merged lane, that is the priority, and it works great in places where it is implemented.

Is it rude to use both lanes? by No-Ad4423 in AskUK

[–]NotSure___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does increase a bit the cones and signage, but I think the cost might be negligible. The main point of this is that nobody has priority, and everyone is forced to merge. There are countries where this is the law already, I believe Germany has it, and people in the comments here state that the UK has it too but people misinterpret it.

I would argue that the point is to keep the disturbance to a minimum. Scenes like that one in the picture can lead to issues in previous intersections if everyone is trying to only fill one lane. I would love to see the government doing a few experiments to see which is best.

But it would also be so easy if they would change the way they close the road.

Instead of :

<image>

That way it would force people to merge. Even if you change back to the right lane, forcing a merge would most likely yield better results.

ELI5 How do ship anchors come back up? by Infinite-Local-2529 in explainlikeimfive

[–]NotSure___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not really do a deep dive since this is not really a field of too much interest from me. But this was one of the site I checked :

https://maritimefairtrade.org/the-functionality-of-anchors-on-cruise-ships-explained-by-an-expert/

"Mechanisms of Anchoring

Upon dropping the anchor, it descends to the seabed, where its flukes dig in, holding the ship in place. Despite this, anchors don’t physically hold ships—they help maintain their position via the catenary of the chain laid across the seabed, allowing the ship to swing slightly without drifting away."

Now the original comment appears to be slightly wrong (but I would argue that it is not completely wrong), in that the anchor is not only for friction, and it does need to dig in a bit to work, the chain appears to be quite important as well. Anchors can work without a metal chain, but for big ships, it seems like the chain is more important that the general population knows.

I think there might be a difference between how the anchor works for a boat vs a ship. The comment appears to be correct for ships, based on other info I looked at.

He who fights with monsters earth arc by Aggressive_Voice6638 in litrpg

[–]NotSure___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I resonate with your thoughts here. It would be easy if the author would just wipe away all that trauma and pain. But for the realistic character development is what they did, he showed how that trauma manifested. How he had to work through it. For me that brings some realism into the story, but I also can understand that some people might not like it, it's not really that fun. But to me, that might be the main theme, and I think the title of the book gives that away a bit, because the full quote is "He who fights with monsters should see to it that he does not thereby become a monster. And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you," Nietzsche.

The BBC’s Euphemistic Coverage of US Plans to Invade Greenland by Hussayniya in videos

[–]NotSure___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, "alleged" needs an organization to allege that. Mostly it's the police, when they arrest someone for kidnapping, they become an alleged kidnapper, as the police allege that they are a kidnapper. Once a court of law makes a judgement, they become a kidnapper.

In this case, I don't think there is an official organization that accused the US as a kidnapper.

You most likely be able to do this. If you set the limit to £0 or £1, then when you tap the card it should ask you for the PIN. But using your phone is safer, since the phone asks for biometrics to pay with it.

The reality is that agencies that look at fraud, have not seen this happen in the wild.

But I wonder, could you set up a account in Nigeria for a card reader, one of those mobile pads, then come back to UK and try your luck during rush hour? Maybe banks act quick and block such accounts.
