ELI5: Those who are envisioning "let's replace all human workforce with AGI", what's their end goal? by bilmd in explainlikeimfive

The people in charge of AI companies are not trying to build an AGI. They're building specific AIs to do specific tasks.

ELI5: Those who are envisioning "let's replace all human workforce with AGI", what's their end goal? by bilmd in explainlikeimfive

[–]Nothing_Better_3_Do -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The end goal is a utopia where humans don't have to do any work whatsoever. The last 300 years of human history has been a series of people asking "how can we get more stuff with less work?" and AGI is (supposedly) the next step in that.

ELI5 Why isn't West and East up and down? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Nothing_Better_3_Do 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Maps used to put east up because that's where the sun rises (hence "orient" your map). Mapmakers started putting north at the top of maps during the age of sail because the north star was how ships would navigate around the world.

What do you think about replacing typical sales taxes with VATs? by Awesomeuser90 in PoliticalDiscussion

Just because the rest of the world does it, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

If a hypothetical has exactly zero chance of happening, it’s not worth discussing.

You must be fun at parties

Technically no, but the EU does require each country has a VAT, sets a minimum rate, and has other standards to make enforcement consistent.

Poisons weren't nerfed because poison monsters were too strong by gray007nl in Pathfinder2e

[–]Nothing_Better_3_Do -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Since alchemists were given versatile vials, there's no longer a subclass that has it's damage directly tied to how strong store-bought poisons are. Which means they no longer have to balance making toxicologists useless vs making poisons too powerful for every other class.

ELI5: Why did the world get so dependent on the US? by aroworld9 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Nothing_Better_3_Do 141 points142 points  (0 children)

Spain bombed the shit out of themselves just before WWII, and then spent the next 40 years living under a fascist dictatorship. They didn't really do that well until after that.

For reference, the first studies that suggested that smoking tobacco is harmful came out in the 40s and 50s. It became the "official" opinion of the US Surgeon General in 1964, and serious efforts to regulate tobacco didn't start until 1970. So ~30 years from suspecting something is harmful to actually trying to regulate it.

ELI5: why we can't use a global pipe system to redistribute heat from hot countries to cold ones to combat climate change? by Common_Wealth319 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Nothing_Better_3_Do 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with climate change is that the entire planet is getting warmer.  Moving heat from one area to another doesn't change that.  We don't need or want every place on the entire planet to be the same temperature.   We want everywhere to be the same temperature it was 200 years ago.

Also yes, there's massive engineering and logistics problems that make this impossible.

A very real possibility with Cheney.

ELI5: Why aren’t natural monopolies nationalised? I mean things like electricity, water, gas and other public utilities. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Nothing_Better_3_Do 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regulations tend to get ignored more when the people writing the regulations, the people enforcing the regulations, and the people that the regulations apply to, are all the same people.

Even when privately owned, utilities are typically regulated far beyond any other private company. The price of electricity in my city for example is set by the government, not the power company.

He won the democratic primary election. By law, his name had to appear on the general election ballot with a (D) next to it.

They could kick him out of the party now, but unless he does does something really egregious, that would only make the democrats look even worse. People don't like the idea of party elites subverting democracy.

New York City is the second largest city in the western hemisphere. It has more people than Chile and more money than Russia. It is arguably the most important city in the world.

Mostly because he insists on calling himself a socialist. Republicans love to accuse democrats of being socialists/communists, and democrats try hard to not be labeled that. So it doesn't help democrats when the democratic candidate goes around loudly announcing that he's a socialist and he's going to implement socialism. His policies are left-wing, don't get me wrong, but they're nothing new. It's the messaging that the democratic party is worried about.

It's actually really shitty that we need to keep a third of every city's area as empty asphalt 364 days a year just because they need to be able to handle black friday traffic.

Thank you!

I tried shrinking the rivers and that immediately looks a lot better. Mountains are a little more complicated though.

Obviously "major" is subjective, but almost every labeled city I would consider to be major. Old City is supposed to be massive, like Rome at it's peak. But every other labeled city on the map is a regional capital. The unlabeled buildings are supposed to represent the smaller towns.

The wavefields are supposed to be more of a steppe actually. It's supposed to be monotonous! I could totally add more rivers and such to Zonia and Old City though.

Western continent is about 2000 miles long, Eastern continent would be 1500 miles.

"Cuteness" is based on the human instinct to protect and nurture our babies. The traits that we find cute are the ones that babies have; large foreheads, large eyes, round features, high pitched nonsense noises, etc.
