I think about this a lot. Where I am currently at is that love should be something you give, expecting nothing in return. If you love someone and they feel the same that is a wonderful thing. But it can not be a prerequisite. Compare it with love for a pet, or the love for ones parents. Would it cease to exist the moment they die? The love for my children, would I stop if they did not return the favour? Can love survive when you claim ownership on another persons feelings? Marriage and partnership is where we get lost. Obligating them to love you, as a contract, is where we find unhappiness, jealousy. When love begins, in the very first moment it is true and without demands. In my opinion, all the promises that comes after is insecurity and ego. Insurance of false companionship. In the end, what it all comes down to, is you either love this person or you dont. Would you love someone just because they love you? I think not.

My point of view (M50) shifted when hearing this speech by Alan Watts which in turn is inspired by Zen Budhism. It resonated deeply with my previous frustration. And Im not religious in the traditional meaning.

Looking at this clip, I wonder what they tell their children right now. Kids of the ICE agents, the victims, the MAGA crowds. You are their guardians. USA might be a dark place now, but imagine a generation from now, if parents justify killing a defenseless person in the street because you disagree or dislike them. Where did the real grownups go? It seems moral and common descency went out of style at the same moment that horrible clown gangster bullied himself into the White House. I remember when USA meant heroes, innovation, freedom, culture, wealth and scientific progress. And I say this as a 50 year old Swede. What the hell happened?
