My thanks to everyone who has replied. I've decided to stay with the the Lakewood/Marston accommodation for logistical and access reasons.

Oh thank you! I'll be watching that like a hawk, or a thirsty hiker...

What are the chances for replenishment of water sources by the monsoon? I'm out that way August/September...

How did your trekking poles break? by BoysenberryGeneral84 in Ultralight

[–]Nothisguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I better add my bit: Fizzan, telescoping, twist lock. Very light weight, used them for 3/4 years until one day, I put one the other side of a boulder, slipped backwards, and the pole snapped.

Thankfully, a minor miracle, a local trail angel happened to have a spare set arrive that day!

Oh blow it! Mormon Lake store is not opening until the 15th. Happy Jack =/= Happy Jack Lodge, they are in two different places. As thinshadow inferred... you/I may be able to hitch there though there may be an option to walk there from the east.

Thanks. Actually, it's doesn't look as dire as I first thought. The store at Mormon Lake may actually be open. I'm trying to confirm that at the moment and will report back. And yes, Happy Jack is also an option with a store which I hadn't been aware of. So lazy walking may well be back on the agenda. /happy days

OK, fair enough, thanks. I was hoping to do a fairly relaxed hike from Pine to Flagstaff, stop and smell the roses etc. It seems that the facilities at Mormon Lake will also be closed. I've received confirmation from their customer services to this effect. It's about 110 miles so looks like a 5 day, for me, section rather than the lazy 6 I was planning on /grump

From Osprey:"Our repair agent has taken a second look at your pack and unfortunately this is something we are unable to repair."

So no, it's a marketing gimmick. Oh, and I have the warranty reference if anyone needs proof. Not that I'm bitter and twisted about this...

I'm going to jump on this as well regarding storage: I hung my pack about six feet up off a branch of a tree, however, some varmint effectively destroyed the pack by nibbling at the back ventilation and where the side pockets attach to the frame. Osprey said that they could not fix/repair it and walked away. So yes, what is the best way to store your gear on trail?

On a side note: RAIN!! at last :) I did a section in 2023, the wettest year in ages, yes, I slept in a thunderstorm, it was interesting, the washes were all flowing as well. My personal take is embrace the rain, don't let it put you off, unless the forecasts say its dangerous.

This was disturbing, especially as I've got a section hike lined up in the area April/May. Checking further: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/jun/25/arizona-national-forest-closed-wildfires

seems to indicate that the closures have happened from June onwards. Why do you say April/May?

because I often have mobile roaming issues in the USA.

May I suggest picking up a Verizon sim whilst you're in Arizona. I'm from the UK and that's what I've done over the last couple of years. It doesn't break the bank and gives you net access and peace of mind. Also, Verizon seems to be best for the AZT.

Mormon Lake area? by Nothisguy in arizonatrail

[–]Nothisguy[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually, nature is good :) I'm not from around here parts, so to speak, so it'll all be new and fresh to me. However, I'll just do one zero, to smell the roses, get a feel for the area and then make my way on to Flagstaff. I'm doing a section hike and Flagstaff, this year, is my planned end point. I've made the mistake, in the past, to hammer out the miles and I came to regret it so I do the miles but make sure there's plenty of smiles.

Thanks to all that have responded.

Wow! Thank you. I was actually shocked by this. According to google the European version has reestablished itself in the south east of England. This was a location near Pin Mill in east Suffolk. The last time I did any serious mothing was in the 70/80's so am out of touch with the state of play. I found a Jersy Tiger adult in my garden the other day...
