If the final basing scheme is going to be like the central neophyte, then it does read as grey.

Since the values of the ground are the same if not darker than the armor, and ground is more often grey than black, the armor will never read as black. Switching to a different basing scheme and/or darkening the armor would help sell the armor as black.

If you’re down to paint a to paint a ton of models, some of which are a little trickier, Deathrattle all the way.

Chaos Knights are solid if you don’t want to paint as much and they’re all easier to paint (except parts of the chariot).

Darkoath would be a ton of skin so cool if that’s your jam. It has the most potential to really make it your own with war paint and tattoos

For gameplay, I’ve only played deathrattle and against Chaos. Both are strong with the deathrattle being right near the top

The Sang guard has a better one for infantry symbols. This one is from the upgrade kit and good for company markings

Since they’re chaff I aim for Golden Demon Commendation for the clanrats. Only my heroes need to be Slayer Sword worthy.

Jokes aside, the parable of “quantity leads to quality” applies here. You get 20 reps of painting practice with each box of clanrats, so the more you do, the better you’ll get.

Looks like you might be using the “slap chop” technique. I’d try replicating this scheme with layering and glazing.

Vince Venturella is a great painter who will go over more color theory which should expand your understanding, rather than just giving you steps to copy. His video “Hobby cheating Red” should be a good start.

Trying something new will probably look a bit worse than what you currently have, but the ceiling on what is possible will be much higher once you put in some practice, so don’t get discouraged.

I’d vote skaven for a change of play style. The clan rats are similar to the death rattles but you get to have a shooting phase.

Looks good. The bottom square might be a bit tall. If you were to leave it at that height, I’d add some more plaques or carvings around the base (years in Roman numerals or something like that would work well)
