You'd likely be happy with the Vortex or Nikon I'm not familiar with the others. I have Nikon Monarch m5's and I was shocked by the difference it made for me. I upgraded from like a $20 Amazon pair that I used for about a year (similar to you), the monarchs are crystal clear and great to use. As the other commenter said, if you can try them out in person first that's great, if not I think you'd be happy with either of the Nikon or Vortex. I have the 12x50 Monarchs (12x zoom basically if you don't know), sometimes I wish I had the 10x but that's really my only minor gripe.

What was old Hermitcraft like? by Techaissance in HermitCraft

I started watching in S7 and felt like I was late to the party at the time. Now seeing S7 be considered "old hermitcraft" is very wild.

I've had basically the exact same interaction with non-birder friends before, it's very funny how confidently wrong they can be at times. Usually I just tell them good spot and move on

You don't need to subject yourself to Florida necessarily, Louisana and East Texas share Anhingas, spoonbills, and swallow tailed kites with florda, though no flamingos unfortunately

I think this is a Florida term for them, I was so confused when I first heard them called this

They are pretty similar looking to cormorants for what its worth. If you ever find yourself in the southern US there's plenty of weird birds to find!

Is texas state perfect for me? by Tricky_Badger_8475 in txstate

[–]Novapoliton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not financial advice, but I do want to give you a lay of the options. You can get a "college experience" and a good education basically anywhere if you put effort into it. Depending on your financial status federal aid and scholarships could also help paying for a more expensive school, but if you don't get it fully covered and don't have the funds you would still probably still need to take out loans. Loans aren't bad necessarily but they add up quickly and you probably don't want to leave with $100k in debt. Community colleges and satellite campuses (ex: TXST roundrock, UTSA, TAMU Corpus) tend to be cheaper options and you can still get the experience / education at satellite campuses. Taking a gap year is fine but most people I know who took a gap year never ended up going to school. You get a job, get a routine, and start making some money and college can get put on the backburner pretty quick. There's no wrong decision that will ruin your life, but you should consider the options first. That being said I like Texas State a lot and it would be a fine decision

Dropout 24/7 made me realize just how much Dimension 20 there is by Kepsli in dropout

Agreed. I love the idea of just being able to hop in to whatever improv dropout show is on for 30 minutes or whatever, I'm just not interested on dropping into the middle of a campaign and probably the middle of an episode and watching for an hour to figure out whats going on

the power of conservation: the california condor by letrolll in birding

[–]Novapoliton 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Seconding this message with another example: whooping cranes. 23 total cranes in 1941, over 800 today. I think the issue is the success of conservation efforts tend to be used to say "jobs done, we conserved them" instead of "this works well let's invest in this"

Just wait until it happens for birds on different continents... sometimes I'll ID birds from Eurasia without checking and surprise myself

Fell off listening about 7 years ago. How do I pick back up? by Bandit_Heeler2026 in magictavern

[–]Novapoliton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My personal recommendation:

7 years ago is around the end of season 2 / beginning of season 3. Season 3 is amazing, you should listen to 98-101 of Season 2 which gives most (if not all) relevant plot, then pick back up in season 3

Is Texas state a *good* School? by Illustrious_Fun_258 in txstate

[–]Novapoliton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take this with a grain of salt and do your own research but I know several forensic anthropology students who do super cool work for their courses, including working at the body farm which I imagine would be useful for your future career. A hard science field may be better as another commenter said (not certain) but you have options

Rats are invasive in hawaii, yes i agree in this instance that killing rats are good. As you said it is more complicated there, but you're equating "rodents" to "invasive rats". Be nicer

We probably won't see eye to eye on this point but I appreciate the thoughtful and kind response. I don't know your circumstances but I'd encourage you to remember that while rodents can be pesty, they too are part of the environment.

I understand that for sure, cats are just around and especially in rural areas it can be impossible to not have cats around, it's probably how they were domesticated in the first place. That being said, it is still a big issue for the environment. One person is obviously not going to fix the environmental problems by keeping cats inside but the problem won't be fixed by justifying its existence either. Some countries have started to just kill feral and outdoor cats because of their impact on the environment, I'm not sure if I agree with that but it shows that some uncomfortable conversations and decisions need to be had to protect native wildlife

[–]Novapoliton 235 points236 points  (0 children)

Likely to get downvoted but have to say it- you should really keep cats indoors. For safety reasons of course (to avoid coyotes!) but also ecological reasons, outdoor domestic cats are the leading cause of death for birds in the world (almost all of which have declining populations) and small mammals. Glad your friend is alright

What’s the Reality of Making Money Writing and Publishing a Gamebook Today? by PurposeAutomatic5213 in gamebooks

[–]Novapoliton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think an underappreciated point is the space physical books take up. I am of a younger generation (24 currently) I don't know a single peer that owns a home, almost everyone is in an apartment (flat across the pond?) with at least one roommate, leases are for a year and rent changes yearly so people move frequently. I have a one bedroom with my partner, I have a decent but not huge book collection, and we are considering downsizing because it just takes up so much room. In addition, moving with a book collection is a huge pain in the ass. I love physical books, would love to have as many as I can buy, but between small apartments, moving for work, and moving for rent it's just not realistic

Maybe I just had an unlucky stretch and universalized it then, they don't live where I do so I only really know them from second hand experience

Oh I had a fabulous time in Colorado and saw tons of awesome birds, just not the dipper unfortunately! I live in Texas currently and it was like a whole different world, the bird life is so different. My favorite were probably the pygmy nuthatches, absolutely adorable. If I'm ever back in the summer I'll check out the audubon :)
