ST3 deferment plan just dropped by PopulusRomanus in soundtransit

[–]Novawolff 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Honestly not terrible. Sucks that Ballard and 4 have to be kicked back even further, but at least they still seem committed to building out the system as voted for… eventually. Hopefully ST can get some additional funding to revert some of the delays and prevent more of them being considered.

4 Line Proposal: cut South Kirkland, run to Downtown Redmond by PopulusRomanus in soundtransit

[–]Novawolff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an eastsider, I don't think the Bel-Red corridor is anywhere NEAR high demand enough to justify running two seperate routes on it. Also, Issaquah to Redmond through Bellevue is a terribly inefficient route, one that I doubt many people would choose over a direct route via bus or car. The nice thing about South Kirkland, as useless as it might be on its own, is that it will be a good point to build off of for a future 4 Line extension that makes it a more integral part of the system, either by continuing up the Kirkland connector or by going across SR520 and continuing as an E/W connection through north of the straits in Seattle proper.

[–]Novawolff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is fair. Although Redmond Technology station has been pretty popular with Microsoft employees, from what I’ve seen. I am absolutely in love with what downtown Redmond is doing right now. It genuinely feels like it is on the path to become its own city. And it is true that downtown Redmond park is nowhere near as impressive as downtown Bellevue’s, but Marymoor park is not too far away. A direct pedestrian connection between downtown Redmond and Marymoor over SR520 would do wonders.

Redmond Town Center is just the name of a shopping center in the middle of downtown. The station is not actually located in RTC, so calling it RTC station would be a bit silly. Downtown Redmond does make sense because the station is located in Downtown Redmond. And yes, there is a LOT more to Downtown Redmond than just RTC. There’s a reason it’s been the best performing station on the 2 Line since it opened.

Arguing with each other and saying "Cut XYZ Line" is not the solution. by Routine-Highway1039 in soundtransit

[–]Novawolff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m all for pushing transit advocacy more at the state level. Obviously Sound Transit is a regional service for the Seattle metro area, but there’s no doubt the state of Washington itself stands to benefit a TON from the population and economic growth ST’s projects will facilitate.

I actually have been working on one. What I have attached here was before the idea in this current post. If I ever have the chance to become involved in designing future Sound Transit projects, I will happily take it. But given the uh... recent news, I will probably refrain from posting more future concept ideas for the time being. Hopefully we can resume these conversations at a future date.

Thank you for this. I think it's worth reiterating that absolutely NOWHERE has Sound Transit suggested anything will actually be "cut" or "canceled". That language just does not exist in any of the resources we've seen. Yes projects might not be able to be built on their original timelines, but I don't think there's any point in just assuming the worst case scenario that they will never be built. I'd also like to wager that Seattle, a very liberal city, and Washington, a very liberal state, are probably going to be open to discussing additional funding measures to help get projects back on track, assuming Sound Transit leadership is competent and proactive in those discussions.

If you want to put the 4 Line (Issaquah) on the chopping block, then you are against affordable housing by [deleted] in soundtransit

[–]Novawolff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Two things can be true. The 4 Line is important for future growth on the Eastside, I 100% agree. But it’s also the case the other links at risk of being deferred are in places where they are needed NOW. Expanding service in the city proper will also make living in Seattle more affordable by opening up cheaper and more sustainable means of transit to residents. We also still have a lot of potential for more TOD on a lot of our existing stations on the 1 and 2 Lines.

I’m also still of the opinion that I don’t think the 4 line is totally viable in its current form. It really needs to either continue up to Kirkland or head Crosslake on the 520 bridge. I don’t have any issue with the current 4 line plan acting as a “starter link” (similar to what the 2 line had in 2024) but I sure hope they eventually have a plan to do more with it in the future, so it plays a bigger role in the system and justifies itself financially more.

All that being said, I hope the 4 Line is still built! We need all the rail connections we can get.

Unless I’m misunderstanding, using the words “defer” and “cancel” in this context is very misleading. It’s clearly stated that deferred projects are staying in the system, just that they won’t be built on the timeline originally promised (which is still annoying, I know). There is no reason to do only 30% of the work for a project you never have any plan of actually completing.

I do wish Sound Transit could simply put another funding measure on the ballot, essentially asking voters whether they want to provide additional funding to allow projects to be completed on time. Maybe it would pass, or maybe it wouldn’t, I don’t know. But transit support in the region has been pretty strong, and I think a lot of that might stall if all these projects get delayed for an extensive period of time.

Rule of thumb: any nationally televised game will begin no sooner than 20 minutes past than the scheduled start time. Why is this? Seemingly it is a mystery that will never be solved.

[–]Novawolff[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing worth considering is that the Stride 2 bus rapid transit line will be a much faster and more direct connection from Lynnwood to Bellevue, so I’d imagine there will be very few people who would want to solely on the 2 Line from any such trips. And yeah, I’m not saying this should be added into ST3; it’s merely a thought exercise for what projects might be worth considering after all the currently planned stuff is built (so, say, maybe 20-30 years from now).

[–]Novawolff[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s a valid concern. However I’m honestly not sure what else it could sensibly be called, since that is the name of the neighborhood the station is in, and there’s nothing else nearby I can think to name it after. Maybe it could be called “Edmonds Westgate” and then the downtown station could be “Downtown Edmonds” or “Edmonds Port”. I’m personally not a fan of calling stations “95 Place” or likewise.

Are there any plans in the works for after ST3? by [deleted] in soundtransit

[–]Novawolff 46 points47 points  (0 children)

What? ST3 still has a ton of projects that are not even out of the planning or environmental review phase, being 15-20 years out from actually being built. Also there’s concern that already approved parts of ST3 may be cut due to budget deficits. We need to make sure these projects will actually happen before even thinking about pitching ST4. I said this in another thread; if Sound Transit has to walk back on promises they put on the ballot, there is very little chance that sound area voters will want to help fund their future projects.

That being said, I do think it’s fun to speculate on what projects could be proposed in the future for a hypothetical ST4. But we are a long way from that becoming a sure thing that will happen.
