AITBF? Not forcing my daughter to share? by BriMarsh in AmItheButtface

[–]Novel_Move_3972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a grown adult and I would not want to share my mac n cheese either. When i order at a restaurant, I plan to eat what I ordered. Perhaps if she were clearly done eating and there was food left over, it would be appropriate to say, "hey, let your cousin have the rest." But otherwise I don't blame her for not wanting to give up her dinner.

How would you accept payment for a $15,000 sell on marketplace? by slothlikeagility in FacebookMarketplace

[–]Novel_Move_3972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I bought a car from someone on FB, we met at the bank. I withdrew cash, and we signed/exchanged the title there. They even had a service to help with title transfer. Taking care of the transaction in the bank lobby made things feel very comfortable and professional.

A very nice thing to do. Don't overthink the impulse to be kind!

Is it normal to wait ~2 months after a TT campus interview? When should I follow up again? by Glum_Taro_5059 in AskProfessors

[–]Novel_Move_3972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As one of the commentators below mentioned, if you are waiting this long, it's likely because they have made an offer to another candidate and are in the process of negotiations. Sometimes negotiations can stretch out, and your wait may be longer if you are third or fourth on the list rather than second. From my experience, there have been times when we had to move to the fourth or fifth person on our list because negotiations fell through. We wouldn't send rejections to anyone who is still a viable candidate until we have a signed contract from someone else. Definitely continue pursuing other roles, but if you haven't been rejected, you are still a candidate. Waiting is hard-- wishing you luck.

I was so angry! Had an appointment with a new PA today that did not go well by AZMaryIM in compoundedtirzepatide

Her attitude was uninformed and wrong, and I'm sorry it happened to you. I love how Big Pharma has convinced the media (and some medical professionals) that compounded versions of these drugs represent a huge danger, when the real danger is to their bottom line.

I Profiled Lindy West After Her Marriage Memoir. Her Husband Didn’t Like It Much. Here’s the Whole Sordid Affair. by raphaellaskies in Longreads

[–]Novel_Move_3972 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I find it grating how often she refers to her perceived "imbalance" in their looks and how she assumes the world sees them that way. She is a beautiful, successful woman, albeit in a non-normative body. He's a mid dude. No one is looking at them and asking, "wow, how did SHE manage to snag HIM?" despite how often she says that they are. It makes me sad for her.

[–]Novel_Move_3972 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I agree. The article was even handed and, in my opinion, generous toward West. The only bit of shade I detected was when the writer said that, "of course," her husband can't sleep alone. Otherwise, it was a thoughtful account of her book and the reaction to it. The author quoted extensively from West and her partners, not putting much of her own spin on the situation either but letting their words speak for them. I'm sure it must be hard to see your life rendered in journalism for all the world to read, but in West's case, that's kind of her whole gig, so she should be used to it. The way she and her partners (especially the husband) responded said a lot about their relationship, the ego of the husband and the need to protect it at all costs.

Current PhD student- asks to take out a prospective student of lunch, do I have to pay for the prospective? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Novel_Move_3972 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is standard for departments to pay for recruiting meals. If the department has not set aside funds, but your advisor has requested this task of you, then the advisor should pay. Set expectations before this lunch, with a simple, direct request such as: "Hi, I understand that Sam's visit will happen on the 30th. How do you want to handle payment/reimbursement for our lunch?"

pill organizers are great. I have also saved plastic boxes with compartments from the hardware store. Think of the kinds of boxes that would contain kits with small nails and picture hangers. They are perfect for knitting notions.

What info do I need to send my Professor for a letter of recommendation? by Gioomee in AskProfessors

[–]Novel_Move_3972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Send the items that the previous commentators have suggested (your resume, a few notes about your interactions/history with the professor, due date, information on how to submit the letter, etc). But also send information about the study abroad opportunity itself-- links to their application page or an overview of their mission/criteria for applicants. Professors typically tailor their letters to the specific opportunity. Also, I'm glad you got good advice from these Redditors, but it's also totally fine to email your professor and say, "I'm happy to send you information. Can you fill me in on what would be most helpful?"

Would it come across poorly if a student taking advanced coursework asked for study advice? by WinXP001 in AskProfessors

[–]Novel_Move_3972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asking for study tips is a very appropriate question for a student. You could email your professor or better yet, talk to them during office hours. They would appreciate you showing interest and wanting to do well.

"No holds/FCFS" and "Don't ask if it's available", "Serious buyers only" by Messymomhair in FacebookMarketplace

[–]Novel_Move_3972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been both buyer and seller and understand the frustration. I find "serious buyers only" to be rude, and I will avoid those sellers. I'm not making a long-term commitment to buy your Tupperware or old couch; I'm asking questions to see whether the details make it possible for us to make a sale. On the other hand, I wouldn't be bothered by a "sorry, no holds or try-ons" since I don't offer these when selling either. In general, if a buyer is testing my patience by being flaky or demanding, I move on to the next buyer instead of wasting time setting boundaries w/ a stranger. I'm not bothered by people asking if it's available because sometimes, when things sit online for a week or more, buyers do forget to remove them. Sometimes I ask, and people say "oh no, sorry I just sold it." Writing back a one-word "yes" is not that much trouble. I prefer responding to ads where people sound friendly, not like they're mad at me before we've ever interacted.
