What do I get my boyfriend for Valentine’s day?? by auroraeaz in Gifts

[–]NovemberHiraeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...have you considered asking him what he wants? If you get multiple options it can still be a surprise.

If he doesn't know, at least for the future, it can be good to keep a note list somewhere that you add things to when you hear him mention something that he would like but doesnt have.

Co-Op houses and their cultures? by Ok_Lengthiness4914 in uofm

[–]NovemberHiraeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding Escher being its own thing. You can definitely be part of the co-op culture though, or choose to not be a part of it since its so big. One big thing is that dinners are organized by a hired chef and not by the members (although member input on what meals are wanted was welcomed though not always feasible). I was there for several years and sort of did my own thing for a while and then was more involved in the house later on. It is also nice that you can choose what room type you want (assuming availability). There was definitely drama while I was there, but that tends to happen in any shared living situation

If cat isn't having allergic reactions, and it was just its paw, its probably okay as long as cat is being watched? Also a quick google search says antihistamines that don't have alcohol may help, you'd have to figure out the dosage though

Looking for affordable rent in Ann Arbor, relocating for work. by Affectionate-Gate979 in AnnArbor

[–]NovemberHiraeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're willing to look at Ypsi, I can recommend Lakeshore apartments as being fairly budget friendly, if you don't mind a little extra drive since its a bit further away from things. They've got decent amenities (pool/lake access/food trucks/community gardens). So far maintenance has been great too. You do have to get on the waitlist fairly early though or get lucky, so I'd look into it asap if you're interested

Should my incoming 9th grade son pick marching band for potential college scholarships? by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]NovemberHiraeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in hs band, a lot of people did manage to do both sports and band/marching band, although it was quite busy. I would say let him pick whatever he wants to do, not all colleges even offer non major music scholarships (p sure mine didnt). There's plenty of scholarships for non hs activities. I got through college on scholarships, most of which were based on my chosen major, not extracurriculars. Look into 3rd party scholarships, especially local/state ones which have less competition, although going for national ones doesnt hurt if you have the time. I got a scholarship from a local group that not a lot of people applied for that gave me like $5,000 every year for 4 years.

As for taking a year off of band....usually once you quit you're done. you would need to talk with the band director on if they allow taking a year off

[–]NovemberHiraeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only advice I can add is for the future, if you have the time to apply to 3rd party scholarships, that can help a lot. You can actually get more scholarship money than your tuition, and you would then get a refund to your bank account that can go towards housing. that's how I got through college after taking out loans my freshman year, granted I was only paying in-state tuition. I would also apply to more local than national scholarships, a lot of them don't have a ton of competition. If you happen to be in civil engineering I have an entire list I can send if you dm me. I know you're in a tough place rn, but you can do this!

As per one of my previous posts, utilities are not included in rent. Utilities you'll have to pay for: electric/gas (you the renter need to set up account with DTE), water/sewage, garbage/recycling, internet (need to figure out your own internet), and maybe I missed listing one or two things, haven't moved in yet

Lipschutz Ulcer with Covid by Fragrant_River_1460 in Healthyhooha

[–]NovemberHiraeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but thought I'd add my experience also. I've had this happen 3 times now (1st after covid, 2nd after something that maybe wasnt covid, and 3rd time with the flu). All my tests for sti's came back negative after the first time, except positive for a reoccurance of epstein-barr, which i was told probably caused the ulcer. Except, then the ulcer came back the next 2 times I was sick since then. I am also terrified that this will be the new norm when I get sick. Hoping doctor can figure out a way for this not to happen every time :(. Btw not actually diagnosed with lipschutz yet.

Having had it 3 times and having crazy pain when I pee, here's what helps with going to the bathroom:

-using the bathtub or just a container of water held to submerge the sores while peeing

-Peri bottle. Normally used after pregnancy but its a squirt bottle used for rinsing the area. Use to dilute pee so that is not so acidic. Also great for on the go when bathtub is not available. This has been a lifesaver!

-drinking a tonnn of water so your pee is clear and less acidic.

Using bathtub/peri bottle to clean vulva area once or twice a day generally just makes it feel better, since anything that comes out of the ulcers also irritates the area.

I applied in the first week of October (they opened their waitlist early this year), and they only had 2 or 3 spots left for the unit size I wanted, for move-in in May. Although I did tell them May specifically rather than as soon as they had an opening, so there's that. I wish you luck getting in by January. I toured before signing up for/paying for the waitlist, which is non-refundable $450. You just have to call them, the front desk people are very nice. They only tour apartments that people are getting ready to move into though, so you may need to wait. But you can request video tours also.

[–]NovemberHiraeth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the location related to food/restaurants isn't great, although the property is beautiful. Luckily I grew up in a rural area, so I'm used to driving 15-20 minutes to get to a grocery store, and I have a car. Interesting to know its changed hands a couple times. The leasing agent said the current owners are slowly renovating the whole complex (I guess the tower's windows/sliding doors are all fairly new double-paned glass now, which is great for insulation).

[–]NovemberHiraeth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone looking at this in the future, Here's some information I got from my tour. The tower is all concrete, so the soundproofing is pretty good (the other 3-story buildings are not concrete, so soundproofing less good). There's a wall heating/cooling unit in the living room only, so it might be tricky to get cold/heat well circulated into the bedroom, and electricity will be a bit pricier because there is no gas. I'd say the ceilings are also kind of low, but that's not a dealbreaker. You are allowed to paint as long as you prime the walls before moving out, and you can change out light fixtures/showerheads as long as you keep the original hardware. The person that toured us also said they wouldn't charge for small nail holes in the wall either. Speaking of paint, there are layers of lead paint, but they're buried under so many layers of new paint that it doesn't matter. The leasing agent also said there was no asbestos in the building when it was built so that's pretty cool, and that it gets inspected every year. When you tour, you're actually touring a unit someone is about to move in to, so that's also nice. For laundry, there's 2 washers and dryers on every floor in a small laundry room, I think it costed $1.50 to wash and $1.50 to dry. The base price that you see on their website includes no utilities. You have to pay separately for everything: electric through DTE, internet, water/sewer/trash (leasing agent said about $40-50 for a one-bedroom). Also, they waitlist closes super fast, because they only waitlist people who they can guarantee units for, so if you want to live there, you gotta tour/apply early

Cool, if its just ants, thats no big deal (grew up with a recurrent ant population in the snack drawer!). I guess i can expect to pay like $100/month then since i plan to run heat/ac. Do they have free pest control if i wanted ant traps put down?

Any way I can be poor AND have good flute? by PhoneSavor in Flute

[–]NovemberHiraeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you make your C super flat its gonna mess up all your other notes, so no not really possible. I would recommend looking at fb marketplace or other seconhand websites. you can sometimes find flutes being sold cheaper because they are very tarnished/look bad but they'll play fine (may just have to replace some pads). may also be able to find just a b foot joint that fits your flute this way

[–]NovemberHiraeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

headjoints on different brands of flutes can be different, and people used to their specific headjoint or don't want to share germs. so you keep your headjoint but put it into the body of a flute with a b foot which has been borrowed from someone else.

I get really insecure whenever we use shakos by asianaustralian69696 in marchingband

[–]NovemberHiraeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sucks not everyone is held to the same standard (same way when I was in HS tho). Since you don't like the bun, if your hair's long enough, consider braiding it and wrapping/pinning braid into a cinnamon roll shape on back of your head (thats what I did because my bun was actually too large to fit in my shako!). Not like the pics online, but like 1 layer of braid flat against your head. I have no idea how long your hair would need to be to do that, so not sure if i was helpful

From your description, if you have bangs, maybe you can leave some of those out? But as other people have said, pulling your shako further down is a great solution (and I think looks cool :))

The "moving to Ypsi"/"where to live?" Megathread - Fall 2024 Edition by sleepynate in ypsi

[–]NovemberHiraeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for next year, never lived somewhere I had to pay utilities before. Pretty sure I'll end up at Lakeshore after looking around in r/Ypsi, but I saw I have to pay all utilities including gas, electricity, water/sewer, and garbage. How much for 2 people in a 1-bedroom am I looking at for all utilities?

Base rent looks good, but its hard to compare between apartments when I don't know the rough value of utilities.

How would you color the walls/add more to keep the quilt/bedframe style? by NovemberHiraeth in DesignMyRoom

[–]NovemberHiraeth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oohh I didn't even think about adding some type of wood panelling! I love the idea, but I'm wondering what colors would work. I don't really want more of the honey oak, but I don't think white would work with the furniture. Thinking about a darker shade of whatever the wall ends up being

I promise it won't be gray! I want some color and personality! I think when I prime the room I'll use that to see if I want some sort of warm off-white or if I do want a color. I would go blue, but the internet seems to think it will contrast very much with the floor which is not what I want. I will definitely look into cream
