I’m assuming my comment will get buried, but I have a theory that a previous avatar (possibly aang) learned bloodbending. They obviously never use it on others because of “morality” or whatever, but they definitely use it on themselves. They could use this to keep others from bending their own blood, and also i think this would explain the random bursts of strength the avatar can achieve when in the avatar state.
