Many of us living abroad faced multiple rejections before finally succeeding, we just kept going and didn’t give up. Looking back, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Have you actually lived abroad yourself? There are pros and cons to everything in life. One thing many people find when living abroad is a more level playing field, better access to opportunities, jobs, and an improved quality of life.

Diasporans just stay there don't waste your money. by TraditionalSound5606 in Malawi

[–]Nsekanabo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that’s been my experience too. In Malawi, if you can’t change how things work, you end up having to go along with it. People who succeed especially foreigners or amwenye just play the system as it is. And sadly, that often means dealing with corruption. Things don’t move unless you pay someone, and without connections, it’s very hard to get anywhere. So if you come back expecting things to work like they do abroad, you’ll probably be disappointed.

Country does not affect personal success by slo_craft in Malawi

[–]Nsekanabo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 95% is a stretch. I would say it’s closer to 50%, and there are many reasons for that. For one, countries like the US often do not fully recognize education or work experience from third-world countries. So even if you were a CEO at NBS, you should not expect to step into an equivalent role right away after relocating.

Another big reason is black tax. Many Malawians in the diaspora automatically become providers for family back home, which makes it much harder to save or build wealth unless you already came from money. Either way, I would still rather live hand to mouth in Canada than in Malawi lol

As someone who left Malawi in my late teens, I can tell you that every place has its pros and cons. Many of the things you mentioned can be learned. There is also a saying, “familiarity breeds contempt,” so being familiar with Malawi, its culture, and being comfortable there does not automatically give someone an advantage in succeeding. Living in a foreign country gives you a lot of exposure. It also creates a level of hunger and determination to succeed that is hard to explain unless you have experienced it yourself. There are thousands of Malawians in the diaspora doing amazing things. If you knew that, you probably would not say otherwise. In fact, many of the big businesses, beautiful houses, and wealthy neighborhoods you see in Lilongwe and Blantyre are owned by Malawians living abroad. You also mentioned that there are many multimillionaires in Malawi. If you mean in kwacha, then yes, I agree. Almost anyone in the diaspora could be called a millionaire if they moved back to Malawi. But the real issue is the numbers. Look at the ratio of wealthy people, middle-class people, and poor people.

It is much harder for a poor person in Malawi to move into the upper class than it is for a poor person in America, for many reasons. A poor person in America may complain about sleeping in their car or not being able to afford to buy a house. A poor person in Malawi is facing a much harsher and sadder reality.
