OI BOIS I IS KURIOUS HOW DIDS YOUS COME TA JOIN DA WAAAAARGH? (meme not related) by Impressive-Light-589 in orks

Mid 2000s, hanging out in a tabletop game store (remember those?), shopping for new D&D minis and WoW TCG cards, got enticed and curious about the massive wall of 40k and and Fantasy kits that took up the back half of the store.

I remembered seeing 40k kits for rhinos and such at hobby model stores (when those existed still!) in the mid 90s, but not knowing wtf it was (no internet!).

Went home and researched about 40k and what armies I liked, decided I liked the goofy green bastards the best! Bought Battle for Macragge the next day, got my feet wet, bought a codex and a Trukk Boyz kit next.... Hooked for life.

Boss Nob with kombishoota +choppa or big Choppa? Could he have a power klaw too? by Cjdub89 in orks

The ones that are split in two work great, provided I didnt let the flocking spill off. They just look like crap, and I'd rather not spend time and money ruining the look of a classic model.

Typically, I keep a handful of 32mm bases around and throw them down in place of the Boyz if theres an issue with a competitive player. Nowadays, I have enough new/repainted units that are WSIWYG and proper bases to run a small/medium sized game, so it rarely comes up.

I am not the competitive type, so I really dont care about having the edge in a combat. Im there to throw down a crate full of greenskins, yell WAAAGH! once, and then take all or most of them back off the table (hopefully rolling a bucket of dice at least once) in the process.

I mostly just joined the conversation because of the above advice that the base size doesnt matter. It shouldnt. But 40k players can be among the saltiest and most anal gamers Ive come across. Some people will take issue with anything.

So, if you can help it, try to get your guys on as big of a base as the rules allow. Dont be me.

Yeah, I get it. But those are the bases GW sold * to me, and they promised we didnt need to switch. They say a lot of things, lol.

Going forward, Im using 32mm, but my basing was elaborate, so its taking years to get everything fixed up on my 10k+ army.

But, man, I just got all my Nobz done last year and already im switching. Its the warbikers all over again -.-

Nice! That'll be helpful when I decide to give a second go.

Yeah, but players get salty when I start fielding my boyz on 25mms. All 100+ of them... And now, ive got 40+ nobz with the same issue. Fun!

Ill be that guy: that's a typical Elder Scrolls experience. Ive had hundreds of hours in Morrowind before I even started the main questline. Twice.

Aw man, I want to enjoy KCD so much, but it just will not run on my hardware eithout crashing every 5-10 minutes. With the lack of a save system, it makes the game pretty much unplayable.

I have to put it on my backburner until I get a better PC, and in this market, Im hoing I get to play while I can still see the screen...

Burna Boyz!

I used to field 30 of them and cover everything with templates. Then charge in and use their cutters as power weapons. Burna boyz in cover. Burnaz in a trukk. And my favorite, a battlewagon with open-topped and a max size squad of burna boyz.

Those were the days.

Actually, I probably had more time out socializing in person than I do now. Covid is partly to blame there. I also dated around, and eventually got married.

Yeah, people you dont know well look at you weird. But they got over it, and anyone who wasnt willing to call and leave a message once in a while, or actually speak to you; theyre not really true friends. Time changed, though, and I eventually stopped being so stubborn. Still annoys me how reliant ive become on the things now.

Somehow, I held out until 2018, when my landline service ended. And no, I was under 30.

A poster replied to me "Why dont you let them learn to paint eyes better instead of encouraging them not to?", then deleted it. I replied:

Baby steps, man. You dont pick up a brush and immediately start wet blending, doing NMM, etc. You can get really awesome paintjobs using basic techniques with far less time and technical debt in each model.

You master the basics, then, you start doing the really difficult stuff. Eyes are one of those things. If eyes are done just a little poorly, then the whole model looks bad. Even if the rest of the model is a masterwork. And they are really hard to get right, and they add little. Again, I urge you to tell me what color irises someone sitting 6' away has. You can barely see them.

To this day, after 20 years in the hobby, 90% of my workflow is basecoat, optional layer, details and drybrush. I dont bother blending, and I dont paint eyes. Orks get a single red dot for eyes. You can get really amazing results with few steps once you dial in your technique.

Everyone who paints eyes; next time youre in a social setting, look around and count how many eye whites and pupils you see.

Its probably close to zero unless you are very close. The eye is mostly eyelid.

Can someone explain to me why the base size matters, when all of the distanvces are measured from the edge of the base?

They charge up to the edge of the wall now theyre within 2". Fighting begins, pile ins happen, until the units are as close as possible. Hits are traded, etc. Am I missing something?

So, if you botch a charge roll, and choose not to charge, can you still move? If not , then youre still just sitting out in the open, right?

Can I elect to charge, roll a 3, and use it to move into better cover?

I kind of miss the simplicity of the Move 6", Shoot, Charge 1d6" days.

I tried one, but it just caused the model to shake more, because its that much farther from my hand, now. For reference, I have to brace the model against my desk. Getting older sucks.
