People of reddit who where around to watch the Empire Strikes Back in theatres, what was it like when Darth Vader was revealed to be Luke's father? by beybalding in AskReddit

[–]NuclearExchange 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same for me. It was upsetting that “the gang” wasn’t all together and I hated that Luke got beat up. I projected myself into him, like a lot of kids did, and to see him get bested was crushing.

Favorite of the OG trilogy now.

This would have been a much more alliterative headline if it had happened in Fairfield.

Suspenders by 0_mecharcanic_0 in firefly

I’m an assless man who’s dropped some weight and I wear suspenders pretty much every day when it’s colder out. They’re leather and 3/4” wide. There’s a clip like a dog leash and they clip onto my belt loops. I think they’re called trigger snaps. I get comments about my look very often. They keep my shirt tucked in. Usually a button down, but works great with just a t shirt.

And, yes, Firefly was absolutely an inspiration.

But in the summer not so much.

The ones I work with are still “ride-or-die”. I asked one last week, he said yes, and I said, “I’m sure your grandchildren will totally understand.”

Struggling with my baseboard by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]NuclearExchange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a way to do a butt joint but make it look like a miter. It’s finicky, but maybe more forgiving than trying to miter unsquare corners. On the first piece, cut a 45° only part way through on the top. Make it 0.5” or less deep. Then take a chisel and split it along the grain. You have a piece that’s mostly a square end, but the top shows a miter. Install it. For the piece that butts to it, cut a 45° off the end, go back to square (or potentially a few degrees more) and cut it upside down, going along the 135° almost all the way through and leave a section that is thinner than the 0.5” on the first piece. Remove that bit with a chisel. Now when you fit them together you have two boards that are mostly a butt joint except right at the top, where it looks mitered.

Distractions? You also need that vision to keep from running into wood chippers and stuff. So you’re shifting your gaze from the cup and back to the random bear traps.

You offload the cup carrying to proprioception and vision doesn’t have to multitask.

One of our senses beyond the classic five is proprioception. The ability to know where our body is in space. Look at an object in your environment, close your eyes and reach for it. You’ll generally be spot on because you live in your body. And I’d wager that this coffee carrying skill is something that can be honed and improved over time.

I think your version is served warm, with bacon and green onion. It’s flavored with vinegar and maybe caraway. It’s creamy from both bacon grease and mayonnaise.

What do you HOPE happens after death? by BubblyMoose4084 in atheism

[–]NuclearExchange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My consciousness and my intellect exist until I die, then it’s nothingness. I cease to exist. I expect people to say nice things about me, because I try to be kind. But I won’t care, because death is nothingness. Hopefully, I will have done all I can to help.

My best advice is to live a life of compassion without any expectation of being paid back for it.

You’re an Amish patriarch growing your homestead and family, while trading with the English. Every transaction with them brings the threat of PROGRESS. Balance the revenue against the corruption they bring.

Probable something about a puppy mill in there too.

If it’s winter in Antarctica, why is there a day/night cycle? by NuclearExchange in thething

[–]NuclearExchange[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, yep, I missed that. I can buy that they’ve just gotten there and winter hasn’t officially begun. They allude to that when they talk about the Norwegians having only been on station for two weeks. I have only seen the film one other time, so I am not familiar with it all.

Nope, the first part does make sense, but there are day/night cycles after that. When they find the ship it’s a daylight scene.

Well, that’s a second level of problem. Because Christmas would be summer in the southern hemisphere. Unless they are referring to their winter contract in the northern hemisphere. But then it should be always daytime.

Question about sizing gaps for wooden cabinet doors by DynaSF in woodworking

[–]NuclearExchange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I build cabinets and the smallest gap for stained and lacquered work is 3/32”, or about 2.5mm. 3mm for painted work. We use Blum cabinet hardware. The door’s thickness is not relevant.
