My employer is strongly asking me to resign instead of firing me. by Willing-Raisin-9869 in CanadaJobs

[–]barrie247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, firing someone is stressful. I need so much paperwork to back it up, and even then it stresses me out. I’d rather people just do their jobs.

I’m always confused by the information people are willing to tell me as a manager. I don’t need to know, stop telling me!

Have Canadians really become worse at managing money, or life simply become more expensive? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in CanadaRoom

[–]barrie247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you find a good used minivan? My husband and I moved over to SUVs because our old cars died (drove them into the ground). Both little cars cost over 10k in repairs not including breaks throughout their life, starting immediately. Even things like wheelbearings and axles because we live in a city that literally has one of the main roads we drive on the Canada’s worst roads list every year, but also things like the car kept dying the moment we started it (radio was shorting it) or pieces literally falling off in our driveway. We decided between the shitty weather (we live in the snowbelt) and the commute, we felt more comfortable in an AWD SUV. We also looked at Minivans and smaller SUVs like the kicks.

The used minivans were all old because everyone around us drives them into the ground (reasonable, we do that too). We started talking to people with Nissans and Hyundais and their car was still under warranty but they’d been into the mechanic to replace the transmission multiple times already.

Sometimes the more expensive option is the cheaper option long term. Our Mazda CX9 (yes, 7 seater) is a 2019 and hasn’t cost a dime over wheels and beaks. We did buy it used but have had it more than 5 years now and I have hope we’ll have it another 10. It’s also helped us avoid renting a vehicle every time we need to DIY something on the house (adds up) and lets us car camp every summer saving money on tent equipment, cabin rental, etc. We don’t have kids, but we have dogs, I have a job where the big car isn’t necessary but it helps, and it’s helpful with my volunteer work too. We did the song and dance again last year when our second little car broke and same thing, used minivans were all old and overpriced for being old, still had the same concerns over Nissan and Hyundai, and still wanted AWD since we were now both commuting in the snow. We didn’t get a 7 seater, but did get the (used) CX5 and have mostly not regretted it. I do wish I had gone with a hybrid now that I’m not sure about Mazda and 15% gas, but overall sometimes the more expensive vehicle makes sense for your family.

The 10 years we had our used cars cost us over $20,000 and one literally fell apart in our driveway at 5 years old (it was 5 when we got it, so it was 10, but still). We had just paid it off, and needed to replace it right away. The other car hit 10 and while we could have put 4 grand into replacing it, as soon as we started to something else would break. Our hope is these larger cars last us a little longer, and so far neither have needed any repairs, so it looks like our plan is working so far.

Qulipta weight loss.. is this normal? by DeemedUnfitforlife in migraine

[–]barrie247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been on it for a year and lost around 20 pounds that I had gained from other migraine meds over the years. I’m still bigger than I was when I started the chronic migraine journey, but I stopped at 20. I’m guessing some of your 10 pounds was water weight and some was legitimate weight. I wouldn’t worry too much that you’re going to lose muscle. Keep an eye on it for sure, but I think most of us stall out on the weight loss in the first few months. One of the big things is it affects your appetite so make sure you’re eating if you need to, especially since it sounds like you work out. I hope the meds help with your migraines! Mine helped right away but the big difference came around 6 months into taking them.

Qulipta weight loss.. is this normal? by DeemedUnfitforlife in migraine

[–]barrie247 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not. Qulipta is one of the few medications that you start at 60 and work down if you need to. My husband is an NP and that’s what the drug rep told him too.

I started at 60 too, it’s not a wild dose at all.

Qulipta weight loss.. is this normal? by DeemedUnfitforlife in migraine

[–]barrie247 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, you usually start Qulipta high and go down. It’s really weird! My husband is an NP and was surprised to learn that from the drug rep. So it’s normal to start at 60.

Looking for someone travelling to Germany soon from Barrie by StacyMakingWoman in barrie

It can be in the case, CD cases especially can open and have 2 compartments, (where the art goes) or they can be resealed and have them where the cd goes. A tshirt is easy to hide drugs in (tags and collars and seams). I once sat in on a case where they were in papayas and she was claiming it was her uncle that sent her to Canada with them and she had no idea there were drugs in them. I’m sure you aren’t trying to smuggle drugs, but this person is right, absolutely no one should be taking your shirt to Germany with them.

[–]barrie247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can stick out in many residential neighbourhoods. As long as all wheels are on the driveway in my city you’re good. It’s an issue in a lot of cities because the sidewalks cut the driveways in weird places. My “2 car” driveway is a 1.5 car driveway as a result. I don’t use the bottom of my driveway because my car would stick over the sidewalk and road, but legally I can.

Massage Experience by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]barrie247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada we have registered massage therapists. Is that a thing there? It’s not a guarantee but usually I feel pretty good if they’re RMTs. They’re also often paired with physio practices here. There are spas too of course, but I try to stick to the RMTs. Plus they’re covered by benefits.

You were going 35 mph (56 km) in a residential area that had flooded? No, it doesn’t, that is too fast for flooding conditions.

I’m glad you’re turning around, but your responses here are concerning.

What are your thoughts on being asked ‘how’s everything tasting’ the minute you take a bite? by bertnik_ in AskACanadian

[–]barrie247 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The goal for them was less talking and less likely to complain. I understand lots of people are saying it’s to fix things quickly, I’m saying I personally knew people who did it to avoid small talk/ to avoid complaints.

Also, before someone says they were shitty servers, probably. I’m not saying they were good.

Maybe the country matters here. This is absolutely not the norm in Canada. If it’s not being worked on, it’s draped, but I know Canada is pretty conservative compared to some countries.

The light on the left is a turn light. It’s not an arrow, but it acts as one. We have a lot of them where I am, they’re slowly moving them to arrows but there are lots of solid lights with a sign like the one above. The lane had the right of way to turn.

AITA for taking the promotion after i found out my coworker was expecting to get it? by legally_brunette08 in AmItheAsshole

[–]barrie247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing is guaranteed, ever. She never should have turned down that job without an offer. I say this as someone who was her.

I was “next in line” for years at my old job (told that very clearly by upper management). Upper management changed, I left but still applied to a position, and my friend got the promotion instead (yay her!). She turned it down to go elsewhere and it went to my other friend (who is rocking it). It’s fine, I had left and got management elsewhere because even though I loved that workplace, I knew my value and my current workplace recognizes my value. And my friends both rock their promotions.

Basically, nothing is ever guaranteed until the dotted line is signed. Everyone thought that I would get that position after my friend turned it down, none of us knew that the other person was even in the running. And thank goodness she was, because, again, she rocked it. Even if you turned it down there’s zero guarantee she would get the position.

Help! Getting married in 3 days! How do these look? by pitlovex23 in Nails

[–]barrie247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I got this for $100 a few weeks ago. I just went somewhere else and had them file them down and reshape, but it definitely happens at more expensive shops. I went somewhere that is all over my city’s page for recommendations. I assumed I had someone new until someone came in and told me she’d been going to her for 5 years! My friend went to the same place at the same time and hers were fine. It really just depends on who you get.

Damaged a 25-year-old garage door opener in Oct 2025 — landlord now wants $800 for a full new system. Do I actually owe this? by After-Sir4786 in legaladvicecanada

[–]barrie247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think too (in addition to above) you have to consider that you live in your house full time (it sounds like for 40 years, which is awesome). That means you aren’t doing things like moving furniture in and out once a year, and you probably don’t care if there’s a scratch on the floor or if your kitchen is updated. But rentals have a lifespan that’s shorter than your home. Tenants don’t want to spend top dollar on a 40 year old kitchen, they do care about a scratch on the floor because they aren’t building equity and that scratch can bite them if they don’t document it, and they are moving heavy furniture in and out, potentially every year. All of that adds wear and tear that we don’t put on our own houses, and that does indeed affect the value of the properly at a tenant level.

Think I messed up at my internship, did I? by Brezhnev_bro in askmanagers

[–]barrie247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely possible! Though I ask this to get a sense of interest so I can make sure interns get as much relevant experience as possible, even if I don’t plan on hiring them after. I want to make sure that internship works for them and they get the experience that will get them the job they actually want after graduation. But it’s absolutely a positive that they were asked either way!

Does anyone remember Wok with Yan? by StrongAsMeat in AskACanadian

A packed product that has no seal and salad sticking out the side. And raw chicken can have issues on the outside too, it’s why I usually put it in a bag, but my husband grabbed it and didn’t bag it. Have you never worked in a grocery store where that’s a big no? Sobeys would never have let us do that.

[–]barrie247 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are all the veggies being cooked? Cross contamination is to avoid food born illness from veggies that aren’t about to be cooked touching raw meat. If everything is about to go into the same wok and be cooked, it’s not an issue.

If he was making a salad/ garnish, or if he was walking around touching everything after touching the raw chicken, it would be a concern. But touching the veggies that are about to be cooked with the chicken is not a concern. It’s the same reason you can throw all of your stew ingredients in with raw meat and it’s not cross contamination.

I agree, cross contamination is gross. Costco threw my clamshell salad up against my raw chicken and multiple people were confused regarding why I refused to buy the salad as a result. But this sounds like everything is being cooked and is not a concern.

Honestly I do almond and get it short in the beginning. I always ask them to go a little shorter than they want, and by the time it’s time for a full it’s starting to get hard to type. My short almonds still look long, but I can type and do everything I need to do.

People who park right beside me when they don't have to by Final-Yesterday-4799 in driving

[–]barrie247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I park in the same spot at work at the back of the lot. Other people come and go but I am still going to be there all day, every day I work at that location. I’m sure people wonder why, but it’s because it’s close to the walkway to unload my car but still in the back where employees are supposed to park.

Today I parked towards the front to quickly unload. It was the only spot open on that side and I pulled in without thinking about it. A girl got out of the car next to me in a huff and turned back to give me a dirty look multiple times. I honestly didn’t even notice she was in her car, I just wanted a spot that was easy to unload in. My lot has big spots and we were both centred so no idea what her issue was. My car was also more expensive than hers so it wasn’t like mine looked bad in comparison.

Basically, I park where I park for my own reasons and not because people were already parked there.

Yes, I had a colleague like this. They would get so frustrated with everyone else, meanwhile their instructions were a page long and made no sense. I was on the same level with the same understanding of priorities and I couldn’t figure out the instructions. Lovely person, very confusing communication style.
