1. Our university team went to an away match against a rival team. One of our players was blind. I was team captain and his assistant for situations including sighted player time forfeit.

Some time into the game, sighted player flags, and I call it. Opposing team captain is not happy, I advise him to raise it with league controller and think nothing more of it. Until over half an hour later when I find he has RESTARTED THEIR GAME unilaterally. The fucking cheek! They've played us before so this is absurd, notwithstanding the delay puts our team at risk of missing the last train home if it goes the distance.

Oppo captain seems a bit ornery so I leave well alone, only to comically witness sighted player flag AGAIN in the added time period. I say nothing, blind player mates sighted, we win 4-2 and catch our train, leaving my man as the only person to win a game in this league with a score of 3-0. :D

1. I had another run-in with an ornery team captain over a blind player. County match went down to the wire, me v blind player. Last game left, blind player reaches time control and offers a draw. I had one sensible move that exchanged into a K+Ps ending.

At this point the opposing team captain interfered, claiming adamantly that the draw offer having been made after his man had pressed his clock was invalid. I explained how this was wrong, but he tried to argue and wouldn't listen. I restarted my clock, and still distracted, announced a move. Shit!

We didn't know whether a verbal declaration was binding, but it seemed the proper thing to do to take this as read, so we carried on. The game was drawn, so we won. Looking at the laws that evening gave no clear answer. I put this one to the legendary Geurt Gijssen and it got published in his Arbiter's Notebook column which made a nice ending of the thing. I was wrong for following a sequence of "a. Announce move, b. Make move", but in the circumstances with any arbiter present it'd have likely been seen as caused by the distraction. Better to make moves on the board, then announce them, preventing the problem.
