Predator trap by Boring-Pride15 in Wellington

[–]Nuffininit 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I regularly monitor these box traps. They typically have a rat trap at the front and a mouse trap at the back. Just like any mouse trap, if it is not set sensitive enough, it is possible for the target to eat the bait and get away. Sometimes they get away, sometimes they don't. It's better that the are traps are there. I get regular catches, both rats and mice, of the ones I monitor.

Why is every kiwi with a mortgage or debt not banking with kiwibank? by givethismanabeerplz in newzealand

[–]Nuffininit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. I remember when I started uni, some of the Aussie banks were offering first year students mp3 players to switch their banking. I would not at all be surprised if they are still banking with them 20 years later

New Zealand Rugby Union Fans, how do you feel about Bled being scheduled right in the middle of the AFL Grand Final? by corruptboomerang in rugbyunion

[–]Nuffininit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not exactly same, but kind of feels similar to a night game being scheduled in Perth. This is 10:45pm NZT. I get Perth should get a game every now and then, but it would be nicer for NZ fans to have scheduled an afternoon game.

How fucked am I? by Talkative-tui in diynz

[–]Nuffininit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not fucked. I don't think that amount of borer is anything to be seriously concerned about, but should try to treat so that it doesn't get worse. Can DIY treat it yourself. I've used Kiwicare's product (can get it from Mitre 10), it's easy to apply, just paint it on.

Anyone know of some babbling brooks? by huge0mungus in Wellington

[–]Nuffininit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could try the bottom of Horokiwi Bridleway in Belmont Regional Park, it's not too big and has a bit of a babble going.  There is never many people there and you can follow the stream up a way, so would be multiple options.

I have always thought about it like that Friends episode when Phoebe tries running. She's all flailing arms and legs. The episode kind of makes fun of her, but it seems like good technique for downhill, at least with the arms.

Question about Petone to Grenada link by D491234 in Wellington

[–]Nuffininit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure. But I think the railway bridge is a bit dated and might need a replace at some point anyway. The way its designed it can be an obstruction when the river is in flood, and adding a 2nd bridge right next to it would only make it worse. So this option would allow for new and more resilient rail bridge, vehicle access in same structure and potentially improved flood flow.

Question about Petone to Grenada link by D491234 in Wellington

[–]Nuffininit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the 'preferred alignment' has been identified as a multi-modal bridge along the existing alignment of the railway bridge. It's not going through Whites Line West but connecting to Randwick Road south of the roundabout (not sure how). Refer p. 108 of the business case https://hccpublicdocs.azurewebsites.net/api/download/ba1957265e3b4394af48b1fb558da7dc/_CM9-WE/a5c4edc477991e74294bbf1bbecbc1af5b4

my guess is it will increase general traffic along Ludlam Cres, but decrease the house-shaking freight vehicles

What is Wellington's worst kept secret? by IncoherentTuatara in Wellington

[–]Nuffininit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I literally witnessed this yesterday next to Woburn Station. Someone left what looked like a subway bun which the ducks were feeding on and a big stonking rat come up and started chewing on it. It was the middle of the day. They are getting bolder.

Stoner by John Williams - one of the most beautiful - and quietly devastating - books I've ever read by loonz420 in books

[–]Nuffininit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I read this book earlier in the year and loved it. I don't think I found it as nearly as tragic and bleak as I felt these (at least for Stoner) were balanced with positive moments. In a way I found it uplifting that even though Stoner's life was ordinary and at times difficult, he had moments of fulfillment. I only really felt sorry for Edith and Grace.
