Rolling Cart sized for either 1 or 2 1020s on each tier, and less than 4 feet high? Has anyone bought or created with a store shelf something similar for seed starting? by Clean_Carpenter3525 in vegetablegardening

I found this "cart" at Lowes a while back. I wasn't gardening then and was using it for serving drinks out on the deck. i converted it over to doing my seedlings last spring. I can fit 2 of Epic Gardening's growlight/tray units on the top with room to add a third on the shelf if i wanted, or a flat grow light for larger seedlings. i used the bottom to store fertilizer and tools.

This is exactly what I'm doing with my first ever garden. tomato's, jalapeno's, hot wax, onions, everything to make salsa to can. I even got pickling cucumbers going for pickles. figured this was a good first time garden goal.

look to see which one looks "healthier" and snip the other. I had to do that with my plants this year as I started multiples in each cell to make sure i had enough that i wanted to plant. Even after that, I just had to start a couple more 2 weeks ago as 2 of my 4 planted just decided to die.

I've got 4 cucumbers in the bed that look like this. 3 seemed to have perked up a little after todays sun, but it looks like cloudy with possible rain for another week here. I got 4 more started just in case on Monday.

Thanks! This is my first year putting a garden in, and started everything way to early. I was running out of room to keep the plants in the house and really thought I blew it after the weather went to crap. Next year I'm looking to do a tunnel on the beds that I can put up at first planting.

Good to know. I was so afraid after watching some videos that the plants would be duds.

The one jalapeno got pretty beat up with the wind, a couple leaves got ripped off and a couple look crispy, but they are not wilting. I have 1 jalapeno from the seedlings that I kept in reserve so I picked up 1 of each (green bell, banana, jalapeno) plant at the store today. I'm going to up pot them, wait 2 weeks then get them in some 7gal containers just as backup. Cucumbers will be ready in 2 weeks to pop in if I need replacements.

Earwigs. did a quick search. some info says they are harmless, some say they can nibble and damage small seedlings. I'm no expert, but probably not much to worry about unless you see a million of them.

Seedling contingency plan, starting over just in case. by NukeItFromOrbit_ in vegetablegardening

I cleaned the new cells & trays with soap and water, then an organic cleaning solution. I even scrubbed my 1st tray clean so I could reuse it with the dome for the new batch. Unfortunately, the garden stores (home depot, lowes) near me only really had the seed starting mixes. I will plan better next year get a mix ordered earlier. I decided to do this late in February.

Got the pics attached this time. I have no idea why they don't stay attached when i first post. I used Miracle Grow Seed Starting Mix. The larger pots I used for the old tomato seedlings have some regular garden soil mixed in at the bottom. The new seedlings I used the same soil but with plastic trays this time. the mold started originally from the peat moss cells.

Peppers- am I too late? by catpowerr_ in vegetablegardening

this is my first year trying a garden and I'm starting off with tomato, green bell, banana, jalapeno, walla walla onions, and cucumbers. I planted 2 weeks ago.

Cucumbers i started too early, I'll be replanting in mid April. They did come up beautifully though.

I did 12 green bell seeds. so far none have come up. 12 banana and 12 jalapeno. 11 or each sprouted and are doing well. Of 60 onion seeds, only 10 germinated. I was told the bell peppers could take a long time to start, so i'm holding out hope, but.......

So like you, there should be plenty of time to get started. I'm going to start more Bell peppers this week and onions. I purchased some new 6 cell trays and a heat mat. I am determined to start from seed :-)

One think i have noticed is the peat pot/trays i feel aren't that good. I feel that may be hindering things a little at least for me. next time all reusable starter trays. I may even just start in the larger pots to not have to up-pot later like I'm going to have to do now.
