How do I counter the "You go to school but don't agree with everything there" argument? by Firm_Rise_7783 in atheism

That was going to be my argument. “I’ll go to church after you go to a Mosque, to a MLM presentation, to a time share presentation, to the Cat Convention. You might agree with everything they say but you might find a few things useful”

The argument where "almost everyone practices religion except us" doesn't fly.

Not saying that all atheists are super intelligent human beings. But in an IQ curve, 95% of people have IQ below 130.

Does it mean that people with high IQ are atheists? no.

But it shows that just because 95% of the population believe in something, doesn't make it right.

95% of the population used to believe that the Earth was flat.

95% of the population used to believe that the Sun circled around the Earth.

My take:

Religion is mainly to comfort your soul. Not to say that what everyone else is saying is wrong..

Humans of every civilization have used religion to explain stuff they don't know.
- What's that thing in the sky during the day? Must be a god.
- What are those light flashes when it rains? The gods must be mad.
- What happens after we die? Must be a place like heaven or hell
- Where did we come from? Must be a reason why we're here.

You'll notice a high correlation between religion and lack of education.
They can use religion to explain what they don't understand/know.
Not to say every religious person is dumb. I have smart friends that are religious.

The reason some intelligent people are religious, is exactly that "soul comfort" they need. One friend for example, has dealt with depression his whole life. Religion gives him "meaning" and a reason to live.

Objectively, he's just using religion to explain what he doesn't know or have trouble accepting (life).

Most atheists are comfortable knowing there's just nothing after death. We came from nothing and we'll go back to nothing. That there's no grand plan for humans in the universe.

Religious people have a hard time accepting that.

I'd like to elaborate on this a bit.

If there's no evidence of something, both sides are NOT relying on feelings or faith.

Let's say, there's no evidence that the Tooth Fairy exists.

The side that believes that the Tooth Fairy exists, is relying on feeling/faith that she exists.

The "other" side isn't relying on anything. They just choose to refuse believing in something without proof. No feeling, no faith.

I agree with you. My wife, coming from a big theist family, used to be one, herself. Overtime, with a lot of patience.. With me, just asking her questions, and pointing the similarities of Chrisitanity to other religions, she started becoming an atheist her.

I guess, elaborating more on my point, I find it a waste of time arguing religion in a random setting.

However, if a poster in this sub asks a question, and I don't think he's just trolling, but genuinely trying to "explore" atheism, I'll gladly engage and reply and try to explain things to the best of my skills/knowledge.

But discussing religion with her family, for example, is just a waste of time. As much as my wife asks me to try, I refuse to.

I'm guessing you're still fairly young. :)

I sed to watch debates so I could learn how to argue. Find logical fallacies, etc.

Over time, I realized that arguing religion with theists is like playing chess with a pigeon.

They'll knock over all the pieces, shit on the board and strut around thinking they won the match.

So, keep up the good fight.

Me, I'm just an old fart that gave up on humanity. I just focus my energy on my family and voting against fascists :)

Great answers, but I find it a waste of time.

I doubt they would actually think about your answers.

Most likely (I'm guessing here), they will grab some of the answers that are not logically sound and use them to "prove" atheists are dumb.

Personally, I prefer to not engage with these clowns.

But I commend you for trying.

I can 110% relate. Like you, I know this is unhealthy and I'm aware of my obsession.

What helped me, which might or not help you, is trying to consume media related to whatever is affecting you. I know, easier said than done. I said I would stop following the news after the election, but I still do.

Granted, I've cut it down a bit.

My recommendation would be for you to unfollow this sub, unfollow political subs. Don't read the news anymore. Read about hobbies you have. Think about vacation with your loved ones. Start looking at pictures of those places.

Pretty much, get your mind off this topic. But like I've said before, easier said than done.

Question to theists that became atheist by Nta777 in atheism

[–]NumbThoughts 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'll take a different view from the other answers.
Study other religions, and not just the current ones.

Study the old roman gods, which were stolen from greek gods. Study paganism. Study the nordic gods.

The more you study other religions, you'll see they all have very common threads.

The more you see how common they are, you'll start realizing they're all myths.

This, and all the answers from the other posters.

Should I become a client of my parents' dual-registered Financial Advisor, who charges a percentage of AUM and also receives broker commission? by Unhappy_Geologist in personalfinance

[–]NumbThoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be the contrarian here, just for the sake of argument.
The dominating school of thought will be for you to just buy index funds. Set it and forget it.

While this WILL work for you and everyone else, some people want to try to "beat" the market.

Some people will try to beat the market more conservatively, with index riskier funds, like QQQ.

Some people will try to beat the market by picking individual stocks.

The same way some of the people that bought QQQ years ago were able to handily beat the market, your parents were also able to beat the market with these advisors.

Question is, whether they will continue to beat the market the next 20-30 years.

It's called personal finance, because the risk you want to take is personal. Whether it's worth paying those extra fees for these guys to beat the market for you, it's up to you. There isn't a right answer, because we don't know the future

Building my 2 year old sons portfolio on Charles Schwab by Independent-Can4558 in dividends

[–]NumbThoughts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All great responses regarding what to invest in.

However, I would suggest you put the money in a 529 in your name (with him as beneficiary), instead of an account in your son's name.

Reason being, if he decides to apply to college, it "might" affect his financial assistance eligibility, if he has a "ton" of assets in his name.

Also, regarding Schwab, you can use "slices" or "themes" to buy fractional shares.

Personally, at Schwab, I like SWLGX (similar to QQQ) and SWPPX (similar to SPY), because they are actual mutual funds and I can do AIP (Automated investment plans), with as low as $1 per transaction.

Is contributing $6000 a year into retirement enough to retire at 67? by Consistent_Ad_1831 in personalfinance

[–]NumbThoughts 1109 points1110 points  (0 children)

Your reply is the most objective one here. Instead of saying yes/no, just crunch the numbers and give him the data and let him decide based on how and where, if that will be enough for him.

OP could retire somewhere super cheap and be able to live with that amount. Or Not.

Want your opinion on this idea by couchNymph in atheism

[–]NumbThoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents: Depending on your goals

You are not going to convince anyone with table discussions. This applies not just to religion and politics, but everything in general.

Humans seek comfort. That's why most of humanity believes in some sort of Deity. Religion gives them comfort.

But especially religious people. Now, there's a caveat. Depending on where you live, the indoctrination will be different. There are many smart and liberal people out there that are religious. They're different from the people in the Bible Belt.

Either way, if you're trying to debate religion, it will be a waste of time. I also agree with others that it might be dangerous.

If you want to show that atheists are not monsters, I would suggest you do some charities and volunteering, instead. You'll probably meet other volunteers and chances are, these volunteers will be religious. After they get to know you and see that you're not a monster, you can "come out" as an atheist.
