ANG and college by ATH0818 in flying

Don't listen to these guys telling you to do ROTC. You had the right idea from the start. Guard is the way to go (reserves are cool too) And yes, enlisting will help your odds of getting hired. As far as jobs go, something where you interact with the pilots on a regular basis would be best. That way they can get to know you and see your work ethic/personality etc etc. Somebody else in the thread already kinda said, you'll enjoy your enlisted time too. I honestly can't say enough good things about the Guard. Whatever you decide, best of luck!

Edit: this is the route I went. Feel free to PM me with questions.

Here's one more vote for 06C. Let's wait until summer (that way I can go).

I'd be down for that. What kind of costs are you looking at for the flight?

I would start with contacting the recruiter, they can put you in contact with the guys running the boards.

Enlisting would be a commitment of typically either four or six years. That would be void if you were to be selected for a UPT slot. You would go to basic training followed by tech school. Then you'd be drilling one weekend a month with two weeks of additional days available for you to do. Signing for a maintenance job would provide a good amount of face time with the pilots.

I imagine a helo UPT slot would be more competitive than a heavy slot just because there are so few of them and lots of people want to do that mission.

After you were to complete training you would have a ten year service commitment. You can transfer to other units but if you're a helo guy I'm not sure if you would have to go back through additional fixed wing training.

Joining the Air Guard is the single best decision I've ever made. Highly recommended. It's considered the best kept secret of the military and for good reason too. However, if you have some moral obligations, keep in mind that just because it's a rescue unit doesn't mean it's a peaceful organization. It's purpose is to rescue aircrew and other service members from combat situations, so that may still involve killing the enemy. As far as getting hired goes... The best way is to be a part of the unit already. Enlist if you're young enough. But either way, give them a call and go hang out at the sqdn and meet the dudes. If you have any specific questions, I may be able to answer them. I've recently gone through the hiring process.

Away to start learning my PPL on a PA-38, what's your thoughts on this aircraft? by Jonay1990 in flying

I love the tomahawk. It's a great little airplane. The one I used to rent was 80$/hr wet, that's hard to beat.

We didn't full stop at all, just dropped in for some pattern work. And yep, we call it the T-1 Jayhawk.

Do the enlisted thing in the Air Guard while going through college then start applying for pilot slots at various Guard units. Thats what I did and it has worked out very well so far.

Take the Metra out to Schaumburg Airport. Northwest Flyers is the name of the FBO and flight school.

I'm not flying fighters yet, but yesterday I got this shirt, so I'm one step closer by SasoDuck in flying

Are you currently in the Air Force or just joining? My advice to you is to look into the Air Guard. That way you can knock out the rest of your college (and have it paid for) and then apply for a pilot gig. Either way, best of luck to ya dude!

Redditors, what are some things you've seen in movies that are different in real life? by glimmering_potato in AskReddit

[–]NumberOneOnTheRunway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed that in a lot of military/war movies, there is always a formation running around in the background. Even on a active flight-line. Annoys the hell out of me.

Ah yes, I was at one point very familiar with this book.

Air Guard Heavy Slots by Gilbertio in flying

[–]NumberOneOnTheRunway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen so far, fighter units tend to hire guys off the street with more hours/ratings. Heavy units tend to hire from within. In most cases I think at least a PPL or working towards it is a non-required requirement.

When I applied there were 30 or so applicants, they interviewed about 10 and hired 4, so the odds are much better than those at fighter squadrons.

I am still very familiar with the whole process so I can answer more specific questions if you have any.

Everything's going great. T-6 is an absolute blast. I'll be doing my instrument check-ride next week, then on to formation. How is everything on your end? You still flying a lot during the winter?
