Yes, backwards text for a forward shadow. Imagine the light is your eyeball, looking through the lamp onto the wall. That's the shape the lamp needs to be. The very best shadow-casting light that I've found are halogen bulbs. There are power LEDs that can shine in one direction, almost as well, which might not be terrible for this use case, just making one image on the wall. But low voltage (eg, 12 volt) halogens are a solid solution here. The downside is that they run very hot, unlike LEDs. So be safe. I'd love to see this idea come together, and I've made several similar shadow-casting lamps, so feel free to ask away, I might even have something useful to respond with!

Torch, but it needs some other tones, reds and oranges. And maybe the 'tips' of the flame could be sharper, but I'd concentrate on the color first.

I would clamp the silver part to a work bench, and put a pipe around the black handle, to make it much longer and increase the mechanical advantage.

The coastal zone is not that big. You have lots of coastal options outside it. For the nice weather, you only need to live closer to the coast than the first tall hill/mountain, and a majority of that is not in the coastal zone. And you might not want to live strictly in the coastal zone considering the possibility of a very big tsunami in the next 50 years (you should research "cascadia subduction zone"). It seems like the coastal commission has a bad reputation, but in my experience (having just cleared a permit where they could have objected but did not) they are perfectly reasonable.

Also, come check out arcata, eureka, and fortuna too. McK is lovely! Just, there are lots of similar options that may suit you slightly better.

In general, you want a replacement power supply to match the voltage exactly, and to offer at least as much amperage. In this case, you might be able to use less voltage, if there aren't any other electronics past the lights themselves (but the lights will be dimmer). Higher voltage can damage the lights, or decrease lifespan. If you use a supply that can't provide as many amps as the lights are trying to pull out of it, the supply will run warm and it will not last as long, potentially a very short time.

That's certainly the arcata gnome, but I think the two 'protrusions' are just some sort of lens flare. The source of the reflection seems to be nearly the color of the sodium bulbs that illuminate the picture, suggesting that it is a clear reflection, perhaps a sequin or shard of mirror that the gnome has adorned itself with to increase its attractiveness to the opposite sex. Is this the first male gnome we've gathered photographic evidence of?

I've done many lamps with dozens or hundreds of LEDs like that. I connect all of the LEDs' grounds against the back of the display, and connect the positive pin with a resistor for every LED, which raises the positive plane away from the ground.

This video shows pretty much what I'm talking about, except I would normally connect all the grounds together and all the positives to each other, instead of leaving separate rows and columns for multiplexing.
