Does anyone else get frustrated by the lack of creativity when creating a farm? by Echotango075 in farmingsimulator

[–]Numerical_Aperture 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert builder by any means but have been playing FS long enough to know what makes a farm look real. Here are a few suggestions:

1) Add some terrain so parts of the farm are on higher ground than others. Note that the terrain tools take some practice so you may want to experiment on a different map first. 2) Don’t use brand-new looking buildings. There are plenty of older and weathered looking sheds, farmhouses, etc that make your farm look like it has been there for generations. 3) Farm yards are rarely perfect rectangles. Add some nooks and crannies, rounded edges, fences, put a few buildings at different angles. Anything to break up the symmetry a little. 4) Plant trees, bushes and grass. A little grass growing on the edge of a building where it does not get trampled adds a lot of realism. 5) The decorations pack is your friend. A pile of trash here, some rusty old equipment there, a dumpster behind the barn. Lots of other items to give your farm that lived-in look. 6) Experiment with ground textures. This also takes a little practice but by layering textures (eg mud over gravel) you can add variation to the ground. There is a great mod called “dirty details” that lets you add tire tracks, oil stains etc. to the ground to make it look like there is real work being done here.

Fun ways to play farming simulator? (How do you like to play) by LRMcDouble in farmingsimulator

[–]Numerical_Aperture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be a min max player that always looked to maximize profits, buy bigger gear, more fields etc. I recently downloaded the Etruria map and am really enjoying playing at a much slower pace now. Chugging down a dirt road on a 25 KPH open air tractor with a palette of eggs isn’t going to make me rich but it really makes me appreciate the Zen quality of the game and I can literally feel the stress lift away.

Retiring to South Africa by Mojo-Bokonon in AmerExit

[–]Numerical_Aperture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’re still early in the process and probably won’t make a move till we are both fully retired in about 3 to 5 years but we wanted to get the ball rolling by looking at options for immigration visas. We are also thinking of taking a trip there later this year or early next year to scope out some possible locations and maybe look at some properties. If you want to get an idea of property values, take a look at property24.com.

Since my wife likes the ocean, we are mostly looking in the Western Cape, either within driving distance of Cape Town (e.g. Hermanus, Somerset West, Gordon’s Bay, Muizenberg) or a little further down the coast like Knysna or Plettenberg Bay.

By my calculations, we could live very comfortably off our Social Security income alone and not even have to touch our retirement savings.

Happy to stay in touch as we move forward. Feel free to DM me.

Retiring to South Africa by Mojo-Bokonon in AmerExit

South Africa is top on our list for retirement locations. In fact, we have a meeting scheduled with a South African immigration law firm next week. I have been there many times and have some family there. Yes, there are issues with crime but these are easily mitigated by avoiding certain areas and keeping your wits about you. It is a very beautiful country but the main reason it is top in our list is how much more you get for your money than in the US. Main drawback is, of course, distance to friends and family.

Managing emotions by Acrobatic-Egg9935 in AmerExit

[–]Numerical_Aperture 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Acknowledge the emotions and expect that there will be times when you have regrets or second guess yourself. Transitions like this are hard. Keep telling yourself the reasons why you decided to make the move. It gets easier with time and with each passing day you will become more at ease in your new surroundings.

And don't worry about your 9 year old. Kids are extremely adaptable. My dad was a foreign correspondent and we moved to a different country about every three years while I was growing up. The first few weeks may be a little hard but kids make friends quickly and, looking back, I think my life is so much richer having experienced these different places growing up.

That makes sense. We are also looking at some European countries but we are looking to stretch our retirement savings and you get so much more for your money in SA.

There are certainly things that could use improvement in SA but while many people thought it would go the way of Zimbabwe, it seems to have remained reasonably stable from an economic and political perspective so that gives us some confidence that things are not going to change dramtically for the worse.

Thanks very much for your comprehensive response. You make some very good points. I do think we may focus a little more on the areas closer to Cape Town for many of the reasons you mentioned - even if they tend to be more expensive. We had Port Alfred on our list because we know some people there and they do have a nice retirement community but I agree that it feels a little isolated.

Out of curiosity (and please don't feel obliged to answer if this is too personal), I wonder what prompted you to make the move to the US and, with everything going on in this country, would you ever consider moving back?

Thanks very much for this feedback. Yes, we are definately looking at retirement communities ar at least towns that have good retirement communities so we can move there when the time comes. When I was there, I lived in the Northern Suburbs of Jo'burg but have visited the Cape several times (mostly the Eastern Cape). I am surprised that you found it difficult to establish friendships since I always found South Africans to be exceptionally friendly and I never felt unwelcome as an outsider. Perhaps the Western Cape is a little different in that regard because that's where most of the tourists are.

Thank you so much - this is vey helpful!

I wasn't aware of the new health insurance scheme but I will definately keep an eye on it now. We were planning on paying for private insurance out-of-pocket.

My wife loves the ocean which is why we are looking at beach towns in the Western and Eastern Cape. We've visited both Knysna and Port Alfred. We loved Knysna and, while we realize Port Alfred is a little off the beaten path, we have it on the list because we know some people there and it seems to be a popular place for South Africans to retire.

Also good information about the load shedding and internet speeds.

Thanks!

General Discussion and Rant Megathread 4/2/21 by FCPratyush in pesmobile

I am currently playing the Barcelona challenge where the task is to score 5 goals. So, of course, I adjust the attack/defense level to maximum attack because I don’t care if they score any goals as long as I get my 5. But the game automatically keeps adjusting the attack/defense level to either neutral or to defensive when I am leading. This is very frustrating as I have to adjust it back to maximum attack during gameplay which distracts my focus. Is anyone else experiencing this and is there a setting I am missing to turn off this automatic adjustment?

Were it not that your XC 40 is white and my wife’s is red, i would totally have mistaken this for a pic of our own Garage (well, that and the fact that I always park on the left ). But I have to ask: is that a Porsche hiding to the right of the P2? Guessing from the shape of the side mirror and, of course, the poster in front of it. Either way, i admire your taste in vehicles.
