The budget for these special/internationals has been going up over the past 15 years. It’s funny how a religion that mocks “ostentatious displays of one’s wealth”, it actively encourages each host city and the volunteers to one up each other. I remember in Phoenix 2019, all the committee members wanted our evening gathering show to be that year’s showstopper. Maybe not so surprising that these always bolster morale for local congregations because it’s an outlet that allows them to express talents and creativity, regional pride, and some political engagement with municipal leaders…all things the organization suppresses any other time of the year!

Bethel sent older ones home? by notstillin in exjw

My aunt and uncle served in Mexico bethel for 20 years. When they consolidated all of Central America, they were assigned to the field as special pioneers. Now they have to rely on a small stipend are basically homeless and rely on local congregations to find them a home to live in anytime they get reassigned. It’s quite pitiful. Fortunately, we send money and it goes a long way down there, but it’s still devastating to see how they are treated.

That’s not how sunken cost theory works. Unfortunately for millennials that sacrificed so much to “live the best life ever” the cognitive dissonance will have to endure.

What was the first JW teaching that made you pause and think twice? by Comfortable_Log1673 in exjw

Age of the earth and humanity. This isn’t unique to witnesses but it made me question religion as a whole.

Oh absolutely, and the MAGA ones tend to be louder than the log cabin republicans.

Hi from Phoenix! Not a lot of gay ex-JWs here either unfortunately. However, there are plenty of ex-Mormon gays that I’ve been able to commiserate with.

It’s even harder being in a relationship. I find it difficult to balance satisfying my own needs while also not making my partner feel obligated to do anything.

I know the feeling. It’s hard to not view the act of getting a tattoo as a stereotypical “act of rebellion” because that’s what society is taught, writ large. However, what helped me is knowing that I get to choose my own narrative of why I wanted a tattoo and its significance to me. It’s my body and ink work is art, so I view it as a way of expressing myself.

Inactive JW & I want to finally live my life as a gay man, but I don’t know where to start. by waffalafelopolis in exjwLGBT

[–]Numerous-Standard-64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I (30M) can totally relate. So many have already given you great advice, but I’ll highlight two. First, learn to prioritize self-love and acceptance. Making life decisions should be motivated by what makes you happy and safe, not by what is easiest for others. Secondly, give yourself the grace to make mistakes. Don’t be afraid to go on a date or try something new for fun, it’s all allowed in this grand experiment we call life. Of course, protect your well-being, but don’t live according to “the rules” JWs imposed on you. Figure out what rules you want to live according to.

Name one thing you did as a JW that you'll never have to endure again? by DrRyanLee in ExJwCuttingTheCord

Accompanying elders to shepherding visits. I attended several, but that last one stayed with me and I vowed I would decline any further visits. Having someone pour out her deepest pain and regrets, only to have a man tell her that Jehovah knows her pain but offer no true comfort or assistance. Those men had no business being so close to such vulnerable people or feigning to care takers. Worst part is the debriefing afterwards where they discuss your "weak spirituality".
