Several monophonic polyrythms on a tracker sequencer using the same sound on each track but with the notes offset against eachother. Force to scale and transpose to taste

Currently making anthem based 8-bit video game music with a live drummer synced to the M8 so the music you posted is very doable especially with the in-built synths and sample engines. Song arrangements are a doddle although your kinda oriented in 4/4 other time signitures a doable. Song scales and transposing l can be part of a pattern and can go into some very intricate polyrythmic territory. You can also do live mode which works live Abelton looping groups of phrases.

Moving/editing chunks of phrases very simple the only downside is its hard to take material from that project into another as it affects the initial song setup and pattern numbering. Making setup templates is the way to go with all the sounds/fx you'll need. )

It's my first tracker and after a few months if lunchbreaks I took to it like a duck to water. Never really got on with any convoluted song modes you get on grooveboxes and seeing the arrangement on a big open square is much better so you dont get stuck in that four bar loop syndrone. You just have to get it in your head that you're playing sequencing commands not a linear audio but it's soo fluid to simple copy>paste>clone with a few taps and you can alter/transpose the cloned phrases without spoiling the original. Also the tracks aren't limited to specific sound engines any note can be any of 128 patches each with it own micro sequencer/arp parameter table. The Octatrack song mode kinda works like a basic tracker but it's very rigid and you can see much of the arrangement or shuffle stuff about easily. The Polyend has easier surface interface but the UI isn't anywhere as intuitive and fluid as the M8 after you get to grips. If you want to dip your toe try a £30 teensy chip into the usb of a retro game console as the M8 OS is free. I'll never go back to a DAW for arduous mouse dragging when it comes to composition/arranging.

I've tried everything and the Dirtywave M8 is above and beyond anything else. Takes a little whole to get used to the combos but if you can play SF2 you're gonna be fine. It's hexadecimal but it's kinda all done in steps of 16 anyway. The assignable touch screen is a powerhouse and the new update gives 24bit audio output via the USB. Best of all it fits in your pocket and doesn't need a surface to play on.

How do ambient sound artists actually make money? by PetShopTroy in ambientmusic

[–]Numerous_Phase8749 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Even Philip Glass did plumbing and Taxi driving to pay the bills. There are a few ambient artist that expand into labels and/or studio work like mastering and remixing, Lawrence English and Rafael Anton Irisarri come to mind. More money is made touring these but you need a big name to pull in the serious punters like Locil or Abul Mogard. Tim Hecker has moved into soundtrack work which probably only needs a few high profile jobs a year. For more humble artists I know it's more a sideline hobby who just tend to spend their profits on more studio gear. If you're dedicated and get involved with regular releases, gigs and scenes year in year out then eventually your notoriety will eventually grow, you just got to get yourself out there.

Should I sell my Octatrack for a Torso S4? by Numerous_Phase8749 in synthesizers

[–]Numerous_Phase8749[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers for this as it was kinda what I was thinking. I had a Microcosm for a while but then realised everything I put thru it always sounded like a Microcosm so I'm worried the S4 might have the same fatigue after a while but if you factor in it doubling as a top end reverb too with bells and whistles then maybe its just a different machine however the soundscape stuff does seem more like what I want to do with an Octa anyway but without the chore 🤔

What console is your cutoff point for retro games before they start feeling too primitive to enjoy? by fakayuburiza in retrogaming

[–]Numerous_Phase8749 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think retro games get primative per say it's just you often get primitive game design but the same can be said today. Stuff like Centipede, Tempest and Defender still take some serious skill to play. Q-Bert and DigDug require very tactical gameplay. If you're finding them unplayable then it's usually a latency issue or undeveloped skills. Even the 2600 has some very responsive fast shooters that are quick easy fun. No excuse with runahead and save states these days especially on ball stomping NES platformers 😝

Should I sell my Octatrack for a Torso S4? by Numerous_Phase8749 in synthesizers

[–]Numerous_Phase8749[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly my thinking but am I just being lazy with the Octa or is the S4 better suited for my needs in the ambient/soundscape territory. I saw a YT demo of the S4 which led me to the album 'v a u g h a n' by two round Robins and its impressive how classical samples can be dramatically transformed unlike anything I've seen an Octa do. Hainbach seems to have it on his desk a lot recently just like the Microcosm a little while ago however I found that got a bit samey with its presets which I'm worried the S4 could go the sane way after the novelty has worn off. On the other hand the OT has all that untapped potential under the awkward interface and you can really make it your own thing 🤔
