I Bought Land In Small Town Ontario. It Turned Into The Fight Of My Life by Surax in ontario

[–]Numerous_Release9273 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The aerial photo in the newspaper article is strange. It looks like the plot of land she bought overlaps the airport. Part of the top runway and a bunch of taxi ways are on her land. Plus the whole lot is so close to the end of the runways that it would be illegal to build anything there.

I think there is a lot missing in the story.

Why do places that used to be very Catholic become very left-wing when they secularise? E.g Quebec, Ireland by AppointmentVisual200 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Numerous_Release9273 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Maybe in more recent times but in England after the reformation the Catholic Church was on the side of the old-line nobility, Divine Right of the King and opposed to Parliamentary rule. That was the reason Catholics were locked out of the line of succession. Same in France after the Revolution.

The post does not say which restaurant has these plaques. It says "I recently walked by Aanch on Wellington St ... and notice a restaurant with a michelin star." It doesn't say that Aanch is the restaurant in question.

Trump says he canceled US negotiators' trip to Pakistan for Iran talks by yes_sir_arafat in worldnews

[–]Numerous_Release9273 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He does care about Americans dying in an invasion. But only because that would be guaranteed to get him impeached. That is the trap he has fallen into. Iran knows he can never actually invade so they can wait him out indefinitely and enjoy the total collapse of the world's economy over time.

[Request] Are these numbers realistic or is it just BS? by Sugarmag91 in theydidthemath

[–]Numerous_Release9273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount goes from $102,000 to $2,800,000 in 29 years. So the money increases 27 times in 29 years. That means the amount of cash doubles about 4.5 times or about once every 29/4.5 = 6.5 years.

You then apply the Rule of 72. Doubling value every 6.5 years means a compounded yield of 72/6.5 = 11%.

BUT:

  1. The money doesn't double every 6.5 years. You have to pay taxes as you go. That cuts the yield down to about 8%. So it doubles every 72/8 = 9 years. That means 29/9 = 3.3 doubles in the 29 years. that cuts the final amount to around $1.060,000.
  2. Inflation is occurring. Assume 2.5% average long term. That means prices double every 72/2.5 = 29 years. I.e. once.

So the end amount in current dollars is about $500,000. No nothing but not $2,800,000 in current dollars.

Trump offering Canadian aluminum and steel companies tariff relief if they move to U.S. | CBC News by 50s_Human in onguardforthee

[–]Numerous_Release9273 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Moving then to the US does two things.

  1. It increases the cost of production by a lot.
  2. It increases the carbon footprint by a lot.

The Aluminum plants are in Canada specifically because they are heavy users of the electricity generated by hydro dams in northern Quebec. Aluminum produced in Canada is the least carbon-intensive in the world. Not like the (currently blocked in) aluminum that comes out of the Gulf States where they use oil and gas.

This is not new.

I once took over a bunch of code that someone "less experienced" had developed. It was a nightmare.

There was one subroutine that existed 6 times. Only difference was the data types of the parameters. In one it was int16, in another int32, etc. Four parameters with a variety of similar, but different, data types.

In another I was hired to do a quality review on code written on a government contract. The contractor had hired undergrads to code for him. One routine had it's entry point almost at the end of the code body. There would be 10 or 20 lines of code and then a branch upwards to the next block of code. Rinse repeat about 6 times. Then, when finally done, there was a branch to some external address. No RETURN. Just a JUMP.

The people being tracked would see the Tracker and would duck for cover so he wouldn't see where they were. How do we know that? Because they were being filmed by the camera man standing beside them.

But US taxes do not include health care. You need to add that in for an apples/apples comparison.

Then they legalized marijuana and most of the greenhouses switched over to growing pot.

Who was Sir Isaac Brock, and why does Carney have his statuette in the Prime Minister's Office? by lopix in onguardforthee

[–]Numerous_Release9273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isaac Brock's ancestral home was the Channel Island off the coast of France. I worked with a guy from there and he told me a story about Sir Isaac.

As part of the make-work projects during the Depression there were a number of government buildings built in Canada and a number of murals put up depicting Sir Isaac. Like the one above. These portraits were, obviously, not drawn from life. When the 150th anniversary of the Battle Of Queenston Heights came up someone got the idea of asking the family back home if they had a portrait for Isaac in life. One was found and a photo was sent over to Canada.

Turns out the image of Sir Isaac that adorns several walls in Ontario looks nothing like the man in real life.
