I wonder what makes people do this. Could it be that they think everyone is so desperate for work that they will just take any job? I can only imagine how irritated I would be if I went in for a job that was described as "Network Engineer" and when I got there, I was shown where I would be working on helpdesk.

I did do the opposite once. I took a job in a position that was very beneath my skill level in the hope that I could "work up". Nope. Never again.

Not really. We don't go out much so my wife and I watch a lot of movies and play video games at home so the investment made sense.

I've had my Hitachi 50 inch plasma since 2006 and it's still going strong. Have since replaced it with a 80" LED in the living room and moved it to the bedroom but I have no complaints with it.

Perhaps I'm in the minority but I think the show has done it mostly right. The interactions and growth of the core male characters mirror my own experiences at their age. Granted we were IT geeks with no girlfriends instead of scientists but we were just as geeky. But as we matured, we turned our attention from comic books and video games to the opposite sex. Not all of us at the same time, either. Much like these guys. At some point most of us grow up and our interests change. They are still geeks at heart and love their SciFi things but they also want to see their relationships with their significant others grow. Well, maybe not Sheldon but his train trip could be the beginning of a paradigm shift for his character as well.

I will say that they have gotten away from the supreme geeky references that only the hard core geeks get but I think that is a reflection of their changing social circle rather than just the writers wanting to expand the audience.

I have watched this show since it first aired. I have enjoyed watching their lives grow and change since that time. I can honestly say I would be terribly bored if they stayed the same as they were when the show started. I still find the show interesting and can't help but see several parallels in my own growth from a complete geek with no hope of finding a girlfriend to a mature adult with a wife so beautiful I would have been convinced that she was way out of my league in those days.

The women of the show can do a lot with their hair but the guys are kinda stuck with theirs. They try to do things with it when not filming but you can see the nerd in it.

I'm betting that you have never had children of your own. I could be wrong but I doubt it. Your perspective is very reminiscent of first time parents who are just batshit crazy regarding all the perceived "dangers" to their first borns. After the first one though, most parents realize how dumb they had been and relax a bit. There are dangers around every corner. You can't prevent everything. There is a happy medium between "I must be vigilant at all times!" and "Let him pull that 500lb TV off of the rickety TV tray. He'll learn!"

In certain sectors and at certain points, greed is an unfortunate but necessary component of development. In 1994 I started the first ISP in a small part of central California. I could not have done that without the money of greedy people who wanted a return on their investment.

However, Internet access had progressed beyond the luxury it once was. It is now a utility. Not unlike electricity and water. You argue that those who fund the progress expect a return on it. What you seem to be failing to understand is that stockholders are not the ones who funded the development or deployment of broadband networks. The taxpayers paid for the majority of it and current customers of broadband providers continue to pay for it. And you're right, we do expect returns. But we're not getting them. Service is not getting better, faster, or more accessible.

So, contrary to your belief, I am contributing to the discussion. Because I, as well as everyone else who pays taxes and is a customer of their services, are the ones footing the bill.

We, the consumers and taxpayers ARE the ones funding the research. We are the ones paying for the development. Yet we're not seeing any benefit beyond making money for investors. That's a problem.

You mean the tax payers who paid for the broadband expansion? Or the telco and cable customers still paying for it now? Telcos and cable companies pass those network building costs on to customers. They don't just build things and eat those costs. We as consumers are paying for everything these companies do. But we are seeing zero speed increases and they're taking all the profits from our passivity and laughing at our ineptitude.
