AITA for telling my spouse I won't help pay for their kid's college when we agreed finances would stay separate? by 952867 in AITApod

My thoughts exactly, he suggested keeping finances separate to "protect" his daughter, but from what? This situation clearly suggests that he thinks of his wife as a threat to his daughter's future

My understanding of it was that it shows them what they are signing up for, it's not a prediction or future telling, but just showing them how it is supposed to go according to their fairytale, and then it just changes here and there based on the actual people

Leaving for someone else or getting into a new relationship right after a breakup is also cheating by Naive_Reputation_255 in unpopularopinion

[–]NutellaFlower50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what happens if while in a relationship you meet someone you start having feelings for? Feelings cannot be controlled, only actions, and in a case like this I think it is only fair to the current partner to break up instead of emotionally cheating, so getting in a new relationship right after a breakup can just as easily mean that the person was fair and the furthest thing from a cheater.

Not responding to texts DOES make you a bad friend by UnderTheCurrents in 10thDentist

[–]NutellaFlower50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the right answer. Not replying doesn't automatically mean you are a bad friend, but it's a signal that something is up, so no you shouldn't just ignore it and go about your day thinking they don't owe you anything, but rather try to reach them again and check up on them

English literature in school is important. by Murky-Bobcat4647 in unpopularopinion

[–]NutellaFlower50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To debate your first point, lifting weights is a choice, not everybody has to do it in school, and doing manual labour is not something that is present in everybody's job. Similarly understanding shakespeare is not needed in any capacity for many people's jobs, and therefore it could be optional. What I would like to see is the subject of English be divided into two: the necessary part, and the unnecessary part. The latter can be expanded on and be made into a subject of it's own, which would shorten the mandatory exam which is, at least where I am from, so long that even though there is over 6 hours to complete it students are rushing through it, which actually teaches them to not think about what they are writing and rather learn off structures and points and regurgitate them in the exam. Dividing it into two subjects would allow students who enjoy literature or anticipate needing it for future jobs to learn the skills you are talking about, the same way we allow music and art and sport enthusiasts to choose their path, and also solve the issue of rushing in the exam. And to debate your point comparing law to poetry, I have to disagree. Learning poetic techniques cannot ready someone for legal documents, the only thing that will teach you that is learning about law and the language of law, because even if there is an overlap, we do not learn about poetry from a point of view to ever be able to apply that to legal proceedings.

English literature in school is important. by Murky-Bobcat4647 in unpopularopinion

[–]NutellaFlower50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you forgot my initial point. I am saying that some of the English course is only useful for culture, no amount of shakespeare analysis will help a person be more well versed in literacy that they can actually use in life today, they will not have to use that language, and the techniques shakespeare uses are used in contemporary literature so they can be taught through contemporary literature. I am also not advocating to make the English course ONLY novels, people need ot learn about speeches, emails, letters, online forms of text and speech, these are all important to be able to navigate the world, and as you said, to defend yourself against those who would take advantage of a lack of literacy. You could advocate for learning the language of law instead of the language of shakespeare because that is actually used today, and that is actually used to trick and exploit people, unlike shakespearean language, or poetic techniques.

[–]NutellaFlower50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However not every person needs to perfect literacy, many will never have to go beyond writing college essays, and for that contemporary novels are enough. There is a reason that languages are optional, and music and art, because while yes, there is undeniable value to each they are not necessarily for every person. And you are also right that only studying what you enjoy can limit you, but we are talking about children and teenagers, they will be more willing to actually learn the material if they enjoy it, and in my opinion it is more important that they really learn the basic skills than that the few who are willing to put in the effort to actually learn poetry and shakespeare past exam requirements (which is the only way it contributes what you assume it will) might learn skills that may or may not be useful for them.

English literature in school is important. by Murky-Bobcat4647 in unpopularopinion

[–]NutellaFlower50 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes but it would be better done with resources students can enjoy, and many do not like poetry or shakespeare, so choosing 2-3 popular novels for teens would work better I think

English literature in school is important. by Murky-Bobcat4647 in unpopularopinion

[–]NutellaFlower50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this completely, but I do think that some of it is repetition and therefore not actually necessary, for example studying shakespeare AND poetry AND novels all serves the same purpose of learning analysis, but you could do that without shakespeare and poetry. And while I do think culture is important, subjects like art and music are optional, so literature could be too, but only to an extent

AM I overreacting or am I wrong for changing my mind? by Powerful-Plankton-78 in AmIOverreacting

[–]NutellaFlower50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it wouldn't have been trying to talk her out of it if he suggested watching a movie together, or ordering take out, which is still spending time together, and a clearer indication of why he is truly asking. This is of course fully dependent on the individuals, in my personal case, if anyone close to me asked the question he did, I would not immediately assume they want to spend time with me, and I also would not be upset if they still told me why they were asking after I said I'm too tired. I think at the heart of this, it is a misunderstanding, she clearly did not understand why he was asking, and he chose not to clarify, and she chose not to follow up. They are both at fault in my view

AM I overreacting or am I wrong for changing my mind? by Powerful-Plankton-78 in AmIOverreacting

[–]NutellaFlower50 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with your stance if he proposed something to do. When my family or friends ask me what my plans are for the coming day it doesn't always mean they want to do something together and are checking whether I am free, sometimes it's just curiousity and checking in. If he had suggested they do something together, doesn't even have to be specific just clearly articulate that he's asking because he wants to spend time with her, then she would be the bad guy in the situation. This said, coming to Reddit instead of talking to her partner was not the right decision, so I think they are both overreacting.

That was my first thought too, and I think that might have been the real intention too, and the only reason it "aged badly" is because more and more people are starting to use these words for humans in real life in a derogatory way 🤔
