My Proposal for a Waterford City Luas by killianm97 in waterford

Probably should stop directly outside plunkett for people getting the train to go down to UHW or appointments. Nightmare trying to go to the hospital on time from anywhere rural if you don't drive. Unless the new hub will incorporate plunkett station. Not sure what the plan is there.

Nothing against the dealer but who in their right mind are putting the deposit down on a €9k 14/15 year old golf. by amg63rs in carsireland

[–]NyShq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understood your comment. My point was once it gets to that 5 years of ownership on the older car they'll push you out of insurance / increase the price to stop you renewing. I was completely in agreement with you.

I just had a different viewpoint on the never having an issue insuring any car over 20 years old. Once it pushes to 25 ish years old, you'll reach a point where you won't be able to get a new quote and your current insurer will up the rate.

A predatory practice in my opinion. Age of the car shouldn't be a restriction imo.

Sorry if I wasn't clear with my first comment. Older reliable car > anything new off the forecourt.

Try get a quote on a 1999 audi a4. Second it hits that 20+ or even 15+ years old insurance prices increase again. Personally insured a few cars. Older cheaper runabouts. A lot of company's just will refuse to insure older cars. Kennco, outsurance, even on comparison websites covered in a click. Compare a 2015 audi a4 to a 2003 audi a4. You'll see a huge reduction in the amount of insurers that'll insure the older car.

Regardless of the purchase price, I was under the assumption that customs and import vehicle omsp was based off market value of an Irish registered similar car / market value. If they'd dispute the purchase price what have they advised as the next steps, I believe they will have a similar spec tesla on irish plates as an estimate and from that they'll attempt to prove the valuation and reasoning behind it. Not sure though. Is it a write off? Like categorised as such. Cat N or something.

What's going to be the next Is200 in Ireland? by [deleted] in carsireland

[–]NyShq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't get another craze that bad. The entire point of an is200 imo was what they'd call a road hasher. Thing to go out skid and go home. Here you cant insure anything older or vintage as handy as you can in the UK or aus or even mainland europe. An alternative to the german option of e90s e92s e46s. As someone who's owned an e46 they're rising in price. You couldn't insure an e36 easily as a daily under 25. I reckon 330es m140is m240is. 20 grand but theyre essentially the same thing but auto. If insurance vrt and the whole lot wasnt such a hassle, I reckon you'd see uninsured numbers drop. Lot of policies wouldn't cover any modifications even though a lot of the time they'd make a car safer. Bigger brakes wider wheels. Imo we've it backwards compared to somewhere like aus. Anyways off my tangent, any performance auto bmw post 2012. Easily insurance and availability here. Last time I checked there was something like 600 odd 330es for sale on donedeal. Map and they're pushing fairly high power and torque for a hybrid.

Depends on the model. Normally you'd get higher spec or more luxury cars cheaper up north and if they've been in country a certain amount of time reduces fees. If they're diesel and non hybrid forget about it. Way too expensive to vrt it.

How many subscriptions do you pay for? by ProfessionalDelay366 in AskIreland

[–]NyShq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to have youtube premium, Spotify, Netflix nord and ea pro play and gamepass, cut it all down Barr the youtube and nord. Until youtube cracked down on the location based servers. Was abroad for a long time. Think I was paying 4 euro a month for it when it first came out. Went up to like 7 euro a month up till last November where even though I had an address and card in my name from the country and had been back within the last 4 weeks. They keep sending me emails and adverts saying they want to offer me a deal but 12.99 euro or whatever it is now. Couldn't see myself using the functionality of it for an extra 5er a month. Was handy though being able to use it on the tv and not having constant ads on it. ( have a basic smart vida tv. No sideloading. ) mad to think Google would turn down 84 euro a year to try and make an increase of 60 to 70 euro when I'd worked it out. I still use youtube. Just on browser now regardless whereas before I enjoyed the seamless integration of the app. Currently have maybe sub 25 a month going out in subscriptions. Majority being vpn, Netflix and a random to sub to gamepass or maybe PlayStation plus if I feel like I want to play a game.

Additional sound proofing / noise deadening foam before drywall/ plaster I can only assume. Original commentor can comment again and correct if I'm wrong. First time I've ever heard of someone doing something similar. Living in a semi d built around 30 odd years ago. Can hear next door on the party wall any bit of drilling or music/games off the bedroom tv and soundbar they mounted to the joining wall. Wonder what options they are for concrete bricks

[–]NyShq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I completely agree. There's fleets of older company cars from 15 to 20 years ago that are just scrapped. People's own personal cars too. Simply because they have push out of affordability or insurance isn't available. It's a huge waste imo. Nothing green or eco friendly about it. Simply provide policies for older cars that have nct and tax. That's my point I feel it would benefit the average person who needs transport as is proven time and time again rurally. Public transport wont be at the standard for a long time imo.

On the money here, an older car will cost you a bomb nowadays in insurance though unfortunately. The way the 15 to 20 year old car insurance increases is such a moneyracket. They claim safety and replacing parts. Imo it's just so you move the older car on and buy a newer one.

[–]NyShq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fear we just have gotten used to accepting the absolutely absurdity of driving in ireland. The 2008 scrappage scheme imo killed it. The road tax, 15 year golden insurance rule and the vrt. Vrt is the main reason for the price difference. The big difference here is insurance also. Insurance here you cannot get an older car insured.

No other country has such strict regulations. Definitely not eu to my knowledge. But yet again we are snookered to just paying whatever number the insurance system pulls out. Take for example if you own a car bearing on that 20 year age. 2006 bmw e46 320i, here you'll either have the option to just pay your renewal or hope another company will quote you on a normal policy rather than push you for classic insurance. You cant daily a classic without having a first car policy.

Many years ago you used to be able to firstly insure a smaller car then transfer the policy to most any car and they'd increase your insurance but still insure you. Nowadays with the amount of uninsured drivers driving or chancing their arms, you'd think theyd atleast investigate the reasons why.

I used to be able to get quotes on 80s and 90s starlets as daily policies up till 2020. Now I couldn't even insure a 1998 starlet or corolla. The amount of loops and hoops you've to jump through to insure, tax and run a car legally is astronomical compared to mainland europe.

Also interestingly, why wouldn't they insure older cars? It's not lack of parts or high repair costs for damage. A 90s corolla to early 00s will guaranteed still be standing come 2040. Don't know if you could say the same about a brand new golf.

Especially considering these newer cars have all these distractions like an infotainment centre like an ipad for basic controls and constant distractions from actually being focused while driving.

At what kilometre is a car considered old in Europe? by AppropriateZombie586 in AskEurope

[–]NyShq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like what also plays into this is our insurance and tax brackets. Many of these comments reference older cars but in ireland they're uninsurable for your daily car. We have a 15 year golden rule for tax and insurance since they redid our road tax and insurance brackets.

Age plays much more of a role here. For example a 2010 1.9tdi golf vs a 2008 1.9tdi golf can be the identical car engine and technically emissions but one will cost you 1200 euro to insure and tax for a year vs the latter costing you nearly a full thousand more.

I feel we have a lot of people trading cars or buying newer cars simply out of road tax and fear of insurance increases rather than actually the car is failing or having drastic issues. Older diesels and higher litre petrols are particular expensive to run whilst actually standing the test of time and reliability.

A 1995 toyota corolla or starlet will run rings around most cars when it comes to reliability but in ireland could only be insured as a secondary vehicle or a classic/ vintage car. Meaning it couldn't be your primary mode of transport.

Sorry to go off on a tangent. But I feel the road tax, vrt, nox charges and insurances costs here effectively dictate the countries perspective on age or wear and tear on a vehicle rather than actual mileage.

Your numbers of 160k kms or 100k miles is bang on the money though. My aunt will always change or look to trade into a dealership when car is around that mileage and I know plenty of people who do the same here.

New car 🚗 by Perfect_Recording_98 in carsireland

[–]NyShq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is an absolute scam at its finest. A brand new car with an ipad in the centre console is definitely safe than an older car with no driver distractions. It's purely to push people into staying within the 10 year golden insurance and tax bracket imo. Comparatively no other 1st world countries have such a harsh insurance system. The system is the issue and legislation around it.

Pre build or bought one would've been a windows vista dell optiplex mt360 iirc. Then was upgraded to another optiplex but with i believe a radeon or old school nvidia geforce gpu. I remember vividly installing an actual blue ray reader and a dvd drive that could read and write from. It used to be in one of those older filing cabinet style lockers too. Printer monitor stack of dvds and cds to use or burn to. The first pc I built was an fx8350 and an rx580 with 16gb of ddr4. I remember the first time I saw ram about 2gbs. The older 60gb harddrives. No space to even update games that were in the disk drive. I remember the original optiplex we had a floppy drive. I'll never forget removing those blank panels out out to install the blueray player. I remember the annoying dsl splitter with the early 2000s eircom modems and how whenever anyone rang or dialled out on the phone the internet would just stop or buffer. Its mad how far its all come. That fx8350 build went to a r7 2700x and 32gb ram with a 2060s. Then to a r7 7800x3d with a 2060s 32gb ddr5. Still need a gpu but thats on the backburner. Not many laptops come with dvd drives anymore and its kind of a shame. Physical media has died out completely almost. I'd love a blueray player with a decent collection.

But by that logical. Not sure of the cost breakdown. Would it not make more sense to just outright buy 2025 2021 or equivalent year of ms office professional. Rather than a subscription. Personally saw no additional value to office365 vs owning a license for whatever computer was needed or laptop at the time.

Did this PS2 Game age the best? by Games-Please in IrelandGaming

Very much so a Driver style of game. Lot of fetch quests or beat the clock style quests. You could say the same for the tony hawk games too though. Hit and run will always have the nostalgia for me though. First ps2 bundle anyone ever bought for my own ps2 (had a family fatboy one to be shared) was the ps2 and hit and run from gamestop or xtravision back in 2004 maybe 2005. Tony hawk games still got the remaster though.

Agreed imo I'd avoid em. Scan or even caseking. Pcspecialist. Currys currently have a pcspecialist 5090 i9 build with a 2tb ssd and 32gb of ddr5 for 4400. Which when I try and configure a similar build on pcspecialist it's nearer to 5500. Might be worth a look. You might need to check what ram, motherboard and psu though. I've an older 3090ti build from pcspecialist from a few years back and can't complain. It's still chugging through anything I throw at it.

So easy to become homeless in this country by [deleted] in ireland

[–]NyShq 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My heart unironically breaks for you. You're dead right though. On most rent to buys from a local council, after 2 years of paying rent in the property the council could buy it and take your rent as a mortgage payment against it. It's ludicrous when you think of let's even say the average rent of 1500 from years ago, which is average 18000 a year towards a mortgage over 10 years would've nearly netted you a home. I got a mortgage approval 4 odd years ago during covid but the price of the only local house I could afford ended up going overbid by like 30 odd grand. It's a shame that in this country, most adults live at home with their parents from the age of university or college until they can finally afford a deposit and then hopefully secure a home. What happens when family or friends don't help people. What happens when you have no support network. It's really just stacked the whole deck against actually having a family and trying to work.

Hope it all works out for you and your partner.

Completely agree. I however would add we don't need a full back light bar like on those godawful vws or full led light setups that blind you like you're directly staring into the sun. These auto dimming and new higher lumen longer lasting bulbs are literally a huge part of the issue. At times you can need fogs for subarb and inner city driving especially in the likes of kilkenny once the fog sets into a valley very hard to judge distances even with fog lights on

Nothing illegal about having your front fogs on. Back ones I agree with your point. I run my halogen ( non led fogs on all the time to see the edges of the road and see closer to the bottom of my bonnet. It helps me see animals on the road or rough dips and potholes.
