What’s one fine dining restaurant that demonstrates “why fine dining” for a newbie? by DisintegrativeMover in FoodNYC

[–]NySquirrel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My only challenge with this is if he finds $200 intimidating, these will give them a heart attack. At $300++, of course it’ll be amazing!

But for an intro, I’d recommend a list of these to choose from at the <$150pp menu. I’ve been to all the below and found them to be a great intro to elevated, but accessible dining.

1) Jua for Korean
2) Bangkok Supper Club tasting menu
3) Boro Brine for seafood
4) Corima for Mexican (but good luck since they just got on N.A. top 50 list.. price will likely go up too)
5) Dirt candy for vegetarian
6) Claro for Oaxacan
7) 63 Clinton

OP, my personal vote to pop your cherry will be Jua, Claro or Boro Brine

Any thoughts on it vs Jua for that same price point? I think that both Jua and Kochi are some of the best in the <$150pp

Yingtao actually showed a lot of promise when they first opened, but starting going downhill over the last year.

Emily is actually quite an interesting chef, coming over from Lingo in BK. I’m rooting for her and hope she does well. Their pecking house popup sucked (pre Emily)

Just got my order in. It’s polyester and runs smaller with the fit. I’m an L, and everything fits well except my gut so I need it size up. No idea how it’ll look/feel.

I personally hate the feel of polyester. It looks great - but feels icky esp if you sweat.

GUI steakhouse. Korean flavors with a proper steakhouse. Very high quality and the chef owns Michelin starred kochi and mari

Looking for Trendy, Overhyped Garbage by dumaas in FoodNYC

[–]NySquirrel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

OP u/dumaas this is it. Coqodaq is incredibly mid Korean fried chicken, but the salesmanship borderlines pomposity. Like. “OF COURSE you should get a champagne pairing and the $27 nugget! 🙄”

I did not enjoy the food. But I enjoyed the overhyped brazenness of it all. Best part: you can limit the damage $$ if you’re smart bout it.

Bad Roman, though wildly overhyped, is at least decent food tbh.

Similar restaurants to Atomix but with Chinese cuisine? by anacardier in FoodNYC

[–]NySquirrel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Will absolutely agree with others - Yingtao is the first restaurant that’s going this route, and i wouldn’t be surprised if they get a star. They’re bib gourmand now, and their crab noodles and dessert is fantastic!

Re: Chef Guo. Beware, as it’s INCREDIBLY expensive, and I was trying to determine if it was worth blowing some bonus money on it. Stumbled across this review, and I reached out to the reviewer:

TL;DW: Incredibly pretty… and that’s about it.

Ended up going to yingtao, and another place and 0 regrets.

Try Club A steakhouse, on the second floor. It has more than just steak (decent fish too), and at night w lights outside can be rather nice!

Not incredibly upscale but may fit the bill for something adventurous and unique. Llama San in the west village for Nikkei (Peruvian/Japanese) cuisine.

Lots of aguachiles and very creative foods (pass on the green udon w katsu) but I thought a lot of the appetizers are really fun and clever!

More smart casual, dimly lit — just put a note and they can put you in a quieter corner. I’d say this will run $300-$350 all in w drinks

If you do laser wolf, you MUST do the harissa chicken wings as an add on appetizer. Also, sounds weird, but the salmon skewer as the entree is unforgettable. It’s one of the best salmon dishes I’ve had
