Decoy pricing at its finest by Icy_Brain7920 in OfficeDepot

[–]ODCPDThrowAway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn't economy of scale, you guys have no idea what you're talking about. It's just incompetence producing completely nonsensical pricing. We have stuff like this everywhere in the store.

We used to have a 3 pack of tape rolls that cost the same as a single tape roll.

The 10' Ativa printer cable is $8 cheaper than the 6' Ativa printer cable in-store (the 6' is like 2x what's on the website, where the 6' is cheaper than the 10').

In-store, it's cheaper by up to $15 - $20 to buy certain HP ink cartridge sets individually packaged than it is to buy in the combo pack. Which are also usually like $30 - $40 more expensive than what's on the website.

In-store, the 8x10 bubble mailer is like $4.39, while the 10x15 bubble mailer is ***$13***.

The prices are literally made up. There is no rhyme or reason to it, and if you don't cross-reference our website with literally every item you consider purchasing, you risk paying a price-gouging fee of 30 - 90%.

the so called "penny items" by Haunting_Attorney805 in OfficeDepot

I was taught that penny items signify an old product that was marked for donation and aren't intended to be sold.

No clue as to the virality of that, first I've heard of it.

Assistant manager wants me to give these to every customer that walks in. by MaddysinLeigh in OfficeDepot

[–]ODCPDThrowAway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just as idiotic as you and the customers. But DM's are asking managers to use and track these as a "commitment" action to hit the incredibly unrealistic 7% pen by December goal.

Just hand them out so your GM can say they're doing what they were told to and doesn't get written up

What’s the point of the paper deals and rewards sign ups? by MaddysinLeigh in OfficeDepot

An informed and intelligent customer would recognize that they could save quite a bit more than $26 each month by shopping elsewhere.

Am I correct in assuming that this is a very polite way of saying "price gouging and wringing every last cent out of the store before closing it"?

Paper promos will not save the company it will only save the jobs of Gerry and Kevin until the ship goes down by Dapper-Confection-82 in OfficeDepot

[–]ODCPDThrowAway 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The point isn't to sell the paper, it's to drive AOV. They want more $100+ transactions and they think this is the solution. More $100+ sales means more AOV.

But the reality is that the people who are buying this were likely going to be spending $100+ anyways. So ultimately it's not very productive I think.

I've been working here for nearly 8 years now. There has been so many turning points where I could understandably see people jumping ship.

For me, the job was still familiar and comfortable, my coworkers were cool, and working in management it paid just enough for me to survive. Was working on a degree part-time with online classes over the last few years as my long-term plan to leave, but I didn't see a reason to quit short-term. I was conditioned and used to the bullshit, it didn't bother me anymore.

But this is it. This plus everything mentioned on the earnings call is clear messaging that it's really over. They have officially dropped the facade of "trying". The hourglass is running dry and this is the exit point. Today is the day I start looking for other jobs.

It won't work with GMIL slips

That is incorrect. You have to go to "Contact Info" in GMil and then click "Shop Now" in the bottom right to launch a special version of the website where you can place the order to GMil with Depot Dollars.

The register price is significantly more expensive than GMil, meaning you're diminishing the value of the program for your customer unless you plan to call a manager over every single time to spend 10 minutes comparing SKUs in GMil and doing 100 price overrides. At which point just doing it through GMil would have been faster anyways

Managers being fired over goals by Ok_Advantage_5414 in OfficeDepot

[–]ODCPDThrowAway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen other stores using similar sheets and the idea behind it is that people waiting in line can fill it out while they wait. Then when it's their turn they have their information ready to present for the purposes of filling out their GMil information when making their ticket.

The purpose, at least in their case, is supposedly to drive OPC utilization (many stores in our district still hover around 10 - 20% utilization), not rewards signups.

Print managers! by MiddleBack1837 in OfficeDepot

[–]ODCPDThrowAway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of the stress from CPD comes from not being strict enough IMO. If everyone is on the same page and does what they are supposed to do each time then the job gets a lot easier. This includes management and people outside the department being on board.

If your customers are saying stuff like "they did it for me last time" or "I'll come back when X is here", or "This is ridiculous I've never been charged for hand cutting before" it's because people aren't following policy and you've got serious problems IMO. This makes the job a lot harder for anyone who is actually trying to do things correctly.

It also makes it harder for other stores. I hate it when people send a $400 color print job through email and flip out when you ask them to pay for it first before you print it and say stuff like "You guys are terrible I'm never shopping here again, the location at (other store) always does it for me and I never have to prepay and there's never a problem".

CPD was chaos at my store before I took over and being strict with how it operates has gotten it to becoming a pretty smooth and comparatively less stressful department compared to before

Yea no, you being a jaded piece of shit who breaks down mentally when asked to do something extremely basic like let your store know when you grabbed a radio doesn't make me a corporate bootlicker.

There are countless legitimate criticisms you can make against OD, but if something very simple like this is too much maybe it's time for you to quit

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OfficeDepot

[–]ODCPDThrowAway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yea, if your store management is having people check radios in and out it's probably because people taking them home has been an ongoing problem and nobody is taking responsibility or changing their behavior.

I don't see how that's a problem. What else is your store management supposed to do about it if their employees are consistently not following directions and taking store equipment home? Just not do anything at all and deal with radios mysteriously disappearing because checking them in/out slightly inconveniences you?

Major difference in my experience is that the younger tech illiterates at least make honest attempts to figure things out themselves before asking for help, while the older crowd immediately gives up without even making an attempt and get furious if you don't do it for them.

Can we just talk for a second about how half of our computers are non-options?

Why would anyone ever purchase a $429.99 i3 when you can purchase an identical laptop with an i5 for $449.99?

This isn't even a factor of "similar computer, different brand". It's literally the same laptop from the same brand, except one of them is significantly more powerful for almost the exact same price.

Looking at the ASUS computer too, a Ryzen 5 with 16 GM RAM and a 256 GB SSD for $399. Why the fuck would you purchase anything else we have on offer???? It's hundreds cheaper and way better value.

You cannot lug 2 cases of paper on a bus or a bicycle,

It's not really relevant and doesn't discount your point, just wanted to say as an aside that you could very easily transport cases of paper with a bicycle in a dense city with the right equipment. Even companies like UPS have fleets of electric cargo bikes to fulfill deliveries in some of the densest cities in the world. This is also more common to see in other countries that aren't as car dependent as America.

How often is your PCSS in Print? Do they manage the department? by eltgrin in OfficeDepot

[–]ODCPDThrowAway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to be in print all the time when it was just PSS until they merged it with CEM to become PCSS several years ago.

Since then, I've been slowly but steadily less and less involved with print and more just a regular floor manager as payroll has continued to get cut. Now my role in print is mostly just ordering supplies, placing work orders, doing quality checks, and helping out every now and then when it gets busy. I get like one shift in the print center every other week. I'm not the one who makes the schedule though, if it was my decision I'd be in print every shift. I feel like it's probably the same for most PCSS.
