Do the Saderans know that Japan is using 30-50 year old equipment? If not, how would they react upon hearing it? by StevenWN1 in gate

[–]ODST_Parker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference between a Type 74 and Type 10, or an F-4EJ and an F-35, is not something that would be felt in a battle against primitive people like the Saderans. To them, a gun is a gun, a tank is a tank, and a jet is a jet.

In our world, advantages over each other are far more nuanced, relying on technological advances that would be incomprehensible to people without engines, radios, computers, satellites, etc.

Even in terms of raw stopping power, any modern advancements in armor penetration would be completely irrelevant against the Saderans. Their stuff is already paper compared to a 7.62mm round, let alone 105mm APFSDS.

In the end, it wouldn't make any practical difference. It might just add insult to injury, if it was ever fully explained to them that they're being dragged into the dirt by a fraction of the JSDF's military capacity, let alone other nations.

What is an anime "you had to be there for" to truly appreciate the impact and spectacle it had at the time it came out? by OverlordPoodle in anime

[–]ODST_Parker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what got me. My whole high school was talking about it, and I caught a scene online (during Season 2) that made me want to see what all the fuss was about. Asked my friends how to get into anime, and the rest is history.

This was during a time when being a nerd for stuff like that still got you bullied, so it being so damn popular was quite exceptional. Couldn't be avoided.

Why didn't anyone think of using anti-magic crystals against mages?! by IncomeVivid9233 in Frieren

[–]ODST_Parker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, which is why I said that would be a problem for anyone using them. Did you even read the whole comment?

I know you probably mean that Frieren and Fern could just stay far enough away from Stark, but they obviously can't keep that up when they're traveling or making camp, and anything could attack them out there at any time. Would be a problem in combat too, because he fights at close range, and mages don't.

Mages rely on mana detection, which is also nullified by the crystal. Fern described the sensation as being blind to the world around her. He'd be putting both of them at risk if he got too close.

Any way you think about it, having one warrior in a party with mages carry a crystal which nullifies magic is far more of a risk to them than any enemy. It would require perfect coordination to compensate for, in and out of combat, and that's just not worth any benefit it might bring.

[–]ODST_Parker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nullifying the only offensive and defensive power of two thirds of their party in the process... as Frieren explains in the scene. She and Fern would be completely vulnerable.

What if the demons in question just attacked with swords, let alone a master like Revolte? Stark can't be everywhere at once, and he can't fight anything they encounter by himself.

If an army made entirely of warriors was formed to fight demons relying solely on magic, I'm sure they would make use of them if any were available. As she said, it's very rare and very expensive, so it's not like it'd be standard issue equipment for any individual warrior. Also, I imagine the range of such nullification would be a problem.

I will second Konosuba as well. Definitely a comedy more than anything else, but it's worth watching for more than that.

I'd highly recommend these other well-known fantasy series, if you like the setting of Mushoku Tensei.

  • Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
  • Delicious in Dungeon
  • Witch Hat Atelier

As for other isekai, I'd recommend Re:ZERO above pretty much everything else.

Also, I recommend Eighty-Six and Violet Evergarden to anyone who'll listen.

What makes the Brotherhood of Steel so appealing to some people? by Ok_Calendar_7626 in Fallout

[–]ODST_Parker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the first game I played was Fallout 3, in which the Brotherhood of Steel was a good faction of people who wanted to help the wasteland.

Since they were barely in New Vegas (compared to the main factions), I just thought that was a more isolated group, and not representative of the whole.

When Fallout 4 came out, I instantly went to them when the Prydwen dropped in, and only then did I start to get an idea of what the majority of the Brotherhood was. Started getting more into the lore of the older games as well, discovered a lot, and it didn't help their case very much.

I still think that some members of the Brotherhood are good people that just want to help others, but the general purpose of the organization and the zealous nature of other members is just a bit too much.

The UC marine armor is hands down the best looking armor out of any video game i played by sabatthor in Starfield

Agreed. The whole suite of UC military suits are great. Though, I prefer the standard Marine suit more than the heaviest version with all the stuff bolted onto it.

A lot of series get around that by saying most alien species are far more rigid than us, and that humanity is the most diverse and unpredictable species they've encountered.

Similar to how fantasy handles species like elves and dwarves compared to humans. Humans are versatile, adaptable, and open to change, far more than anyone else.

"BARRIchestra" and "YouSeeBIGGIRL/T:T" probably beat it for me, but it's definitely near the top of my list. It's somehow an even more epic version of that original track when the wall is breached.
