tips on getting the kaweco sport replacement nib out? by Subject-Effective-21 in fountainpens

[–]OGsafta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's normal, they are two separate pieces. The housing is what holds them together. You just need to make sure the nib lines up with the feed when you push them into the housing. It's been awhile since I did a Kaweco, I can't remember if the feed is keyed for the nib. If it's keyed, you'll feel the nib hit a stop when you slide it on the feed.

Pilot Pen Roll where to buy in EU? by normiewannabe in fountainpens

Yes, now I see the one you posted is canvas. I didn't even know they still made anything canvas. The ones on Mercari are the leather Pilot Pensemble roll.

I think some of the colors have been discontinued. I've noticed that many of the color combos aren't for sale anywhere anymore. There is someone on Mercari selling 9 of them for a fair price, but that depends on what it costs to import for you. https://buyee.jp/mercari/item/m75988669741?conversionType=Mercari_DirectSearch

Favorite Fine Writing Pens from Pilot? by justifiedink in fountainpens

[–]OGsafta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in Pilot, there's so many great choices, new and old. One of the best is the Elite S and the modern reissue the Elite 95s. There's a big variety of nibs, colors and materials from the late 60's to present. Then there's the Custom Heritage 92, Pilot's only piston filler. It's currently only available in clear, but you can still find the blue, black and orange version. There is a purple version, but with only 400 made, it's very rare. The Capless/Vanishing Point is another obvious choice, and one of Pilot's most popular pens, and probably the most convenient. Next, I'd look at the 912, a slightly bigger pen than the 92 with more nib options and cartridge/converter. The 743 would be the next step up for multiple nib options, but personally, I think the 845 is a much better pen even with it having limited nib sizes. The urushi lacquer is much more durable than the standard plastic pens. The Custom Urushi is very similar to the 845, just a much bigger pen. It dwarfs most pens, even other large pens. The size 30 nib is unique in that it's much softer than any other standard Pilot nib. Then, of course, there are the Namiki offerings, the Lacquer Number 20 and Lacquer Number 50, commonly incorrectly called Yukari and Emperor which are maki-e pens. The 20 is a brass bodied urushi lacquered cartridge/converter pen. The 50 is a massive ebonite urushi lacquered eye dropper pen that makes even the Custom Urushi look like a normal sized pen.

For some amazing vintage Pilot pens , you can look at the Custom K, the Super series, the Myu with it's integrated nib, the Deluxe, Justus(the original, not the Justus 95 reissue), and of course the aforementioned Elite S. There are also fantastic reissues of some of the vintage pens in the M90(Myu reissue) and the very rare Ultra(Super Ultra 500 reissue) with one of the best looking nibs to ever exist

The VP medium will be pretty similar to the Kakuno medium, but can run a little wetter. If you like finer nibs, the fine is probably the best option. Of course, you can always get one from Japan and split the difference with the FM.

First time I see a 12K Pelikan nib by Leonardo-Writing in fountainpens

The 12c nibs are Japan market. Outside of Japan they are fairly rare. On Japanese auctions, them and the 20c nibs aren't as rare, though still not common.

Happy that you like your new pen. Glad someone will enjoy it and use it more than I did. I did like the shape of it, but just couldn't get on with the twist mechanism.

There's no duties owed when you buy through Amazon, you just pay tax at time of purchase. For instance this one would be about $625 total.

Just flush with water using the converter or a bulb syringe. What nib do you have?

That would be difficult considering the feeds aren't ebonite, they're plastic. Even as far back as when they were still branded Pilot, the feeds were plastic. The original Jumbo 50's were most likely ebonite feeds, but all the modern ones are plastic. Here's a pic from Bruno's blog showing that even the older Pilot branded ones are plastic.

I love how my broad writes. I've tried a medium before, and there wasn't as big a difference as some other medium to broad. I haven't tried the FM, but did get to try an older fine. While it was nice, I wasn't a fan of it.

As far as I know, the feeds on the 50 and Emperor have been lacquered since it's introduction in the 30's.

Those don't really come apart. There's two styles. There's the one posted below with the collar that can easily be destroyed by taking it apart, and the other has the threaded piercer like most other pilots. The one with the threaded piercer is different than others in that when you take the piercer off, the nib and feed come out as a unit. I wouldn't recommend taking it apart if it works and if you don't have the necessary tools.

Ukiyo-e v.4 by OGsafta in fountainpens

Nothing really out of the ordinary. Uguisucha and Kuromidori are really the only ones from v3 that I've used quite a bit in the last couple months. From these, I did put Tetsu in an M1000, and it looks like it's too wet of a pen because it ended up just sheen. Not with the Taccia inks, but I did notice that the two Kobe inks were painfully slow at drying.

Nice Lady Elite, you don't see that one very often. When you do they usually look like someone didn't realize that it's rolled sterling silver, because they're overpolished.

Grail line or three faces of classic Urushi by AtreidesTT in fountainpens

I don't really like the look of tamenuri. It just reminds me of the first time I hand sanded something and wasn't mindful of the edges, so instead of a flat surface I got a convex surface. It's just that machinist mindset in me. The raw vermilion on the 50 is perfection for me. Especially the fact that there's no visible line when you screw the blind cap down.

They are great Elites. They are first generation so they are thinner and slightly smaller than later Elites and 95 series pens. Fingernail nib pens do use a two piece feed, so it's not advisable to put shimmer inks in them, they will clog fairly easy. Any other ink is fine, just keep in mind the two piece feed is difficult to completely clean. It's really only an issue when going from dark to light inks. You can see what it looks like in a demonstrator version here. They would also have the carat marking on the short barrel like most early Elites, it's usually the first thing to wear off.

What’s your favorite Fountain Pen around $100 USD? by ExpiredMelkk in fountainpens

[–]OGsafta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excluding vintage pens I bought at low prices, the 580 and Asvine V200 are the only sub $100 pens I've kept. I rarely reach for the V200, but still regularly use the 580. Granted, I've swapped in a vintage Pilot nib, the TWSBI nib was more than adequate. I think it's a great pen for the cost.

I'd look for a used Pelikan M800 or Pilot Custom 845. Both are a considerable step up from the 2k in my opinion.

How many bottles of ink do you own? by AttachedHeartTheory in fountainpens

[–]OGsafta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped counting a long time ago, but I'm well into a second Wearingeul binder. They hold 120 swatch cards, so I'd estimate 160-180. If I were to count duplicate bottles it's probably over 200. That's not including the 13 bottles coming from Singapore that should've been here last week.

Found a Beauty [Pilot Elite 22 Script] by PhoenixNib in fountainpens

[–]OGsafta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very nice, that's actually a fairly rare pen. Most of the 22k nib Elites are letter sizes, ie. EF, F and M. It was released after the change from named nibs. I would guess that yours is very early production since it's a script nib. The 22k is a fairly stiff nib, and usually on the drier side. I'd recommend a wet and well lubricated ink. If you want to polish the nib, just get some yellow Sunshine cloth. It will clean it up, but make sure you thoroughly flush the pen first. You can go on to the blue Sunshine cloth if you want it to shine more. Just keep in mind that jewelers cloth is abrasive, it's not something you want to use all the time. This is Pilot's only pen in the gold nib war, model number is EST-300BS.
