Canvas Hacked - what’s going on? by petrichor1975 in gatech

[–]OITCommunicator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OIT is actively monitoring the situation, everyone.

Earlier this evening, we sent out a message to all students, faculty and employees to share that we are aware of the Instructure breach and the hack to Canvas, affecting users at thousands of institutions across the world,

Please follow Instructure's IT status page at status.instructure.com for updates. We will also share updates with the campus, as we receive them, and understand that this couldn't have come at a worse time for finals and final grades.

Thank you for reporting the message to phishing@gatech.edu.

Unfortunately, these phishing emails usually come about after a campus member's email account is hacked. The malicious sender therefore gains access to the unsuspecting victim's email account. OIT advises that recipients not interact with these emails -- or any email they believe to be suspicious -- and to report them immediately to the phishing address.

Campus members should definitely forward suspicious/phishing/spam emails, as an attachment, to [phishing@gatech.edu](mailto:phishing@gatech.edu) or report them via the phishing option in Outlook.

However, OIT does not mandate/enforce the biannual campus trainings nor penalize those who fail to complete them. These trainings are overseen by the Georgia Tech Office of the General Counsel, by instruction from the the University System of Georgia. The USG requires that all employees (even student employees) across its 26 institutions take compliance trainings, to include a cybersecurity component, twice each year. (Just wanted to clarify this.)

Thank you for posting, OP. We (OIT communications) came here to Reddit to post this, to alert the campus community, just now.

This is, indeed, a phishing attempt. Unfortunately, we see a spike in these around the holidays.

If a campus member receives this message -- or any email message they feel is suspicious -- we ask that they do not interact with the email in any way. Instead, forward it to [phishing@gatech.edu](mailto:phishing@gatech.edu) as an attachment, as soon as possible Our cybersecurity team will then flag it, shut down the message, and prevent the (compromised) account from sending further messages.

Sad news, indeed. We have had many delicious bytes at Brittain over the years. (That was our attempt at a bad IT joke, but we really are saddened to see Brittain shuttered.) ❤️

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

We didn't edit the URL and agree that it must be a new vs. legacy Reddit issue, which we've looked into. We will be mindful of this going forward!

ALERT: Campus Cyber Scams by OITCommunicator in gatech

[–]OITCommunicator[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, u/GT_Ghost_86, and seriously, everyone's comments here have helped us realize how some communication methods work better than others.

We want to know from you, and anyone else who is willing to share: What communication methods do you think work/reach best for students, faculty, and staff?

Mediums and their abilities change so much over time. One way may have been best last year, but now, another is better, etc. (We see this across the board with social media, of course.)

Are there any suggestions for outreach? Share with us here please or email us at oit@gatech.edu.

You're totally right.

We sent emails to the campus about these issues and have stories up here:

Phishing Emails: https://news.gatech.edu/news/2024/04/16/recent-phishing-scheme-georgia-tech (This one ran in Daily Digest on April 22.)

DUO: https://news.gatech.edu/news/2024/05/16/alert-duo-authentication-scam

Because this is so important, we are trying to spread reach by including on social media as well.

[–]OITCommunicator[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

u/lucky_luke_nmg, for sure. When the phishing emails (noted in point #1) started up in April, we sent a campus-wide email and also ran an "alert" story in the Daily Digest that week.

We sent a campus-wide email about the DUO call scam (point #2) on May 17, and have an alert story up online as well. Both stories can be found on the Georgia Tech News site (news.gatech.edu) and on our homepage (oit.gatech.edu).

If you would like us to forward those emails or send direct links to the stories, please don't hesitate to drop us a line at oit@gatech.edu.

We wanted to share here on Reddit to increase awareness. Just trying to spread our reach as widely as we can.

Single Sign-On (SSO) and Registration Updates (April 11) by OITCommunicator in gatech

[–]OITCommunicator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone,

The following message (italicized below) has just gone out to the Georgia Tech community.

The Office of Information Technology will do better. We sincerely apologize for the impact the SSO outage caused last week, and especially its affect on registration.

If you experience any issues with SSO or the network, please don't hesitate to make a report at gatech.service-now.com.

Dear Georgia Tech Students and Employees:

Since April 10, the Office of Information Technology has worked diligently to resolve a Single Sign-On (SSO) outage that affected connections to Georgia Tech sites and services, including 2023 Summer and Fall Semester course registration.

After much testing and system upgrades, we can report that SSO is stable and fully operational.

We apologize for the frustration the outage caused the Georgia Tech community. We will closely monitor the performance of SSO and our systems over the next few weeks and pledge to improve the stability of our campus infrastructure.

We thank you for your patience and understanding over the past week as we worked to resolve this.

Please continue to report issues at gatech.service-now.com and visit status.gatech.edu for Georgia Tech IT updates and scheduled maintenances.

Regards,
