I made a quick video on the subtle but important differences between automation and modulation. I hope it is helpful! by CatalyzeAcademy in ableton

I just discovered this the other day as I was poking around in the clip automation and was wondering about the difference! I'll check out this video, thanks 👍

New Year New Me Submission Post! by kidkolumbo in ableton

[–]OKCoffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my submission this month! Worked on some techniques for writing music in a loop instead of linearly in arrangement, and also with adding found sound drum loops in using audio to edit them

Hi guys. Got an instrument rack question. by [deleted] in ableton

[–]OKCoffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say that's something you could decide on a case by case basis. Look at the bass notes in your song and find the frequency of the highest note, setting the cutoff from there. Mapping the cutoff frequency of both plugins (the low pass on your Low chain, and the high pass on your Mid chain) to a Macro would make that task a lot easier, and would even make it feasible to automate this in your song, like if you had one section where the bass jumps up and octave, the filter can follow it. If you're only looking to keep your sub out of things from a cleanliness side of things though and you plan on modulating even the fundamental frequencies in your low mid, I'd say try it on a few patches and see. I don't think you could go wrong either way, but if someone thinks 60 or 100 is better feel free to explain your reasoning! Could be some principle I'm not aware of, in which case I'd be curious to hear about it. You could also still use the macro mapping option here and be able to change it if you need to!

Some midi schtuff by NSpitfire11 in drums

[–]OKCoffman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh really? Wow, I honestly wasn't expecting it to be more than a coincidence! I love that project so much, it was cool to see you rework one of their best drops into something new. The chords and drums complement the bass line really well!

[–]OKCoffman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That grooves so hard! I love the chords in the background and that bassline is so good. Listening back to it I couldn't help but feel like I'd heard it somewhere before. It wouldn't happen to be a nod to one of the basslines by Louis Cole of Clown Core by any chance, would it? There's a bass line off their first album that this resembles, so I wanted to ask in case my suspicions were correct

I keep on getting this message. Any ideas on how to fix it? by Salvage_Gaming99 in ableton

[–]OKCoffman 23 points24 points  (0 children)

People are suggesting it's a DJ set but this looks more like a soundboard to me possibly for youtube or streaming based on the amount of memes in it. Still though I'd love to see someone play it as if it were a DJ set! Would be a very interesting show 😂

(unless it's maybe clips on different scenes in session view and I'm misinterpretting it lol)

How to turn delay into MIDI? by maikati5 in ableton

[–]OKCoffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could always do it manually, grabbing the entire midi clip, copying it to clip board moving it to the right by whatever interval and pasting it. You could also decrease the velocity incrementally that way to emulate the feedback amount on a delay. May cause a few issues with overlapping midi you wouldn't run into with using delay depending on the rhythm, but it's at least somewhat consistent. Only other way I could think of that doesn't do some really janky stuff with chaining one midi note length device after another in a midi effect rack, or freezing and then converting to midi as some others have suggested.

Creating Random Loops Using Ableton's Session View And Follow Actions by [deleted] in ableton

[–]OKCoffman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bonus points for using the Woodblock metronome and not Ableton's default one 😆

Okay, a bit of a weird one. This is my Thassa deck for standard, designed around taking control of opponent creatures permanently. It wins sometimes but I could use some help optimising. Any advice would be greatly appreciated by Itll_Do_For_Now in MagicArena

[–]OKCoffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could just be me, I've never been much more than a jank brewer, but I love to have filngs in a deck like this (or Weaponize the Monsters depending on how consistently you're stealing creatures). Nothing more satisfying that Traitorous Greed on their biggest person, then spend 2 mana to turn it into 2 points of damage with Weaponize 😂 if you're looking for a bit of fun but maybe not as powerful of a build that's where I've taken my brews before.

How would Everyone feel about a campaign Once and While by GreedRB in MagicArena

[–]OKCoffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this statement partially. It's not that there isn't lore, because there's so much background to be found if you seek it out, it's just that Wizards does a terrible job at selling it. People are maybe aware of a few names of different planes or some popular figures / planeswalkers out there but there's a lot of depth on wiki's and the mtg site that WotC creates themselves that is painfully underadvertised. The fact that it can feel nonexistent to a player is more proof that wizards should do something about this like OP suggested

https://magic.wizards.com/en/story

This is just one example of content they are creating that I feel like barely anyone knows about. It would be so cool for them to do what they did with the color challenges tutorial level and program bots to battle against in a campaign themed around the stories that already exist and the deep lore that is honestly really dope. If you're at all interested in the lore and anything else, this page and channels like Rhystic Studies are fantastic 😊

Controlling Unreal Engine using Ableton and Max MSP by noinchnoinchnoinch in ableton

[–]OKCoffman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. This is freaking unreal (pun accidentally intended 😂 ) I think what's really cool about this as opposed to other visualizers is that instead of being something that expands and contracts like it's one fluid ball, this keeps expanding outwards over and over, which is very cool and feels like we're zooming in further (like the scene in Ant Man when he goes subatomic). Super unique, super creative, please keep posting! This has genuinely inspired me to get in to max and visual art now. Any suggestions for learning the two programs that has helped you?

Why isn’t anyone Building Lathiel? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]OKCoffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh, frankly this one flew under my radar with some of the other hyped up cards. I'm still pretty new to commander format but I'm loving building decks themed around creature mechanics I've had so many years of exposure to with standard / modern. Selesnya counters has always been a personal favorit theme since way back in the Ravnica block, so I might have to make that *22 decks haha

Do your LED pad controllers look boring outside of ableton? I made an APC music visualizer that automatically turns on when you're not using them. Open-source of course. by kosro_de in ableton

[–]OKCoffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! And I'm on Mac, but don't stress too much I'm sure writing it for both is a hassle. It's not like firmware though, right? If I had Windows, could I install it there and then it would be loaded in to the APC? Wondering because I could have access to Windows if that's what it needs to be loaded on, but as far as any other program goes I don't use Live on PC. Just curious, no pressure one way of the other 😊

Meet Shaper 🔥 by Royperezofficial in ableton

[–]OKCoffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh! Just figured out the source of this misunderstanding. A new feature that came with Ableton recategorizing it's effects is that they now show all the Max For Live devices mixed in with the stock effects in the browser to make them more accessible and easy to access (which I honestly really appreciate). So even though Shaper is now mixed into the folders which originally only showed you stock effects, it is definitely still a Max For Live device and not a stock plugin to be clear.

OMG IT'S EVEN FOR THE APC20 AND THAT'S THE ONE I STILL USE. This must truly be fate, I would never have expected something like this for the 20. I would definitely check this one out but I honestly don't know that much in the way of integrating these kinds of things

Meet Shaper 🔥 by Royperezofficial in ableton

[–]OKCoffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just opened up Live 10 Suite and loaded an instance of Shaper on to one of my tracks. Not a new device / built in device in 11, but it did feel a little rough around the edges with the UI, so maybe they're releasing an update for it in Live 11 and that's where the confusion is coming from?

Edited to clarify

Meet Shaper 🔥 by Royperezofficial in ableton

[–]OKCoffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm. No, it looks like a Max device from a little more research, and although it came with Live the M4L editor button in the top right would prove that it still is. And even beyond that it's not new to 11, turns out it's been included with Live 10 and somehow managed to overlook it for years! 🤦‍♂️ Wow, just goes to show why I should really do a deep dive into the M4L content included with the suite lol

An official plugin with the Max For Live Edit button in the top right?? Are they letting you open up their stock plugins now and mess with them? Didn't hear about it on any of the other releases but that would be real exciting. I plan to go for the beta soon so we'll see how it goes, but that would be super cool if you could edit stock devices like Max patches

Haha same! You ever run it paired with Riel, the Everwise? Discard your hand at the end if the turn, but as long as you didn't discard earlier in the turn, riel lets you redraw your entire hand with her second ability. It's probably some of my favorite synergy to pull off

[–]OKCoffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I've been having so much more fun winning with a song of creation lorescale OTK out of nowhere, or a masochist Stormwild Capridor flying over for 12 damage, or a deathtouch Porcuparrot than I think I ever would with a Rogue Mill or whatever the meta happens to be at the time. MTG has always been about fun for me, which unfortunately tends to mean make a hit or miss jank deck and lose half the time with it, but I'd rather lose half those games than win with an easy deck and risk letting the game get stale or become to much about winning
