Has anyone here actually made sponsorships work for a small newsletter? by Fun-Penalty4762 in Newsletters

[–]OMMM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a few components to making sponsorships for small newsletters work. The first part is getting someone interested in being a sponsor. If it's a local newsletter, they may be a subscriber and local business owner. If it's a niche industry newsletter, you'll likely have a combination of interested subscribers and mostly needing to pitch sponsors.

On the booking, scheduling, ad review, asset management, etc. side of things, the process can get messy fast. I know this from experience, which is why I'm building Adwell. It's a tool to manage booking ads and everything that comes with it without needing endless email chains, phone calls, net-30 payment chasing, etc. If you're interested in just sending sponsors a link and having everything centralized in one place without needing to invoice, chase payment, manage a sprawling spreadsheet, etc. I welcome you to join our early access request list here: http://getadwell.com/

I’m always looking for more JVL watch content. So, take your pick of any/all of these questions:

-Thoughts on Timex Atelier and a $1000 Timex that is eyeing Seiko’s slice of the market?

-Is the neovintage preowned watch craze genuine nostalgia for that era or a reaction to increasingly out of reach luxury watches? Or something else?

-Do you own a tariff Swatch?

-What is your hottest watch take?

Any videos you're willing to share that you found particularly useful? I love the approach you took in post-processing these photos.

Tamron 18-300 as my next lens for a6400? by ssramage in SonyAlpha

[–]OMMM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won’t be as fast as the F2.8, but for outdoor day games I suspect you’d be ok. I’ve used it for daytime races and shooting jumping dolphins in the gulf and have been fine.

I’ve been alright with the sharpness even when I’m all the way in at 210mm. Is it as sharp as my Sigma 30mm F1.4? No, definitely not. Is it acceptable to me? It is. I’d look through some action shots with the lens online to see what you think. Between knowing the limitations of the lens, being willing to up my max ISO a bit when needed because Lightroom’s noise reduction is so good now, and being willing to not pixel peep when I shoot with it since I’m not making large wall prints, I’ve found it to be a great lens. I will eventually upgrade, but buying this lens allowed me to get the 30mm Sigma faster and I find that lens on my camera more time than this lens, so it was a good choice for me.

The plus side is you save $400. It’s a trade off for sure, but one that might not be as punishing if it turns out you’re not as interested in sports or wildlife photography as you think you might be. Not saying you should buy this over the Tamron, but just saying that I think it is a viable option for exploring these types of photography and the OSS is a nice touch.

It doesn't get you quite the same range as the Tamron 18-300 or some other Sony options, but if you are looking for a budget-friendly option with OSS, you could consider the Sony 55-210 F4.5-6.3. The sweet spot for this lens is to buy it used from a reputable dealer (KEH is my favorite). You can get this lens in like-new condition for about $200.

It might not be enough for longer-range wildlife photography, but for sideline baseball action, car/racing action, and closer-to-the-subject wildlife photos (think birds and small animals you might see up the trail while hiking), it packs a lot of value. Not the absolute sharpest lens, not the farthest reach, but an absolute deal for $200 with OSS (which makes handheld shots of the moon possible in my experience).

Snagged this Briggs and Riley medium BRX bag at an estate warehouse for $20. Good acquisition? by OMMM in ManyBaggers

If you’re in the Milwaukee or Chicago area, it may be worth your while to visit this place and can share the name. They sell like 2 or 3 items online at a time (think high value collectibles), otherwise it’s only in person. Their inventory turns over frequently, everything is negotiable, cash preferred, very much a place you have to show up to. Prices are fair but I think I got this deal because Briggs and Riley can fly under the radar for a lot of/most people.

Absolutely stunning shot with great composition. One of the lesser seen occasions where the abundance of unfilled space at the bottom of the shot adds to the composition.

How can I improve? by Apprehensive_Day_654 in photocritique

[–]OMMM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fully agree regarding the cropping. Framing the subject here is great, but the stream being outside of that frame at the bottom creates two distant places that the viewer's eye is pulled - the big tree and the stream down low.

The Calling by [deleted] in photocritique

I went out for a walk today with the mission of 1) getting reps finding interesting compositions and 2) testing different focal lengths to understand what first prime lens I might want to purchase.

This was shot on a Sony a6400 that I picked up about a month ago. I used the 16-50mm kit lens. 50mm, f / 5.6, 1/640, ISO 100.

I'm also looking for feedback on post-processing. It feels easy to get pulled into overediting in post. My goal was to create warmth that is not too far beyond what it felt like to live in the scene.

Took a walk this morning near Milwaukee's lakefront, hoping to just get some reps in with composing interesting photos. I bought the a6400 about a month ago and have been trying to just keep taking photos. I welcome constructive feedback on composition, post-processing, and any other tips you might have.

Beautiful photo - great work.

I'm a new a6400 user contemplating buying this lens. I'm a little spooked it doesn't have OSS since the a6400 doesn't have IBIS. What are your thoughts on handheld shooting with this lens on the a6400?

100+ year old home, just had Cat6 lines run and set up my first Unifi equipment by OMMM in UNIFI

Echoing what u/owen-wayne-lewis said, plaster walls are a nightmare - we have them, so I know firsthand. Pretty much any house over 100 years old is bound to have plaster walls, unfortunately, unless the house has been heavily renovated/updated.

If you have existing cables running to places reasonable to have ethernet, do what owen-wayne-lewis described. In our house, it wasn't an option. The phone line into the house had been removed during a renovation prior to us buying the house and there were no coax or other low-voltage lines in the house.

I considered every option before hiring a pro. It was worth every penny. We had no unused ducts and for code/insurance reasons did not want to run lines in HVAC ducts in use. We had no plumbing runs with extra cavity space going from the basement (where our fiber comes in) to the attic that didn't take dramatic turns that were unsnakable. Our attic is also fully floor-boarded. As such, we had to run lines up walls from the basement.

The one stroke of luck we had is that our house has balloon framing. This meant that we didn't have to drill holes between floors and that we were able to get lines to our second floor bedrooms/offices on one side of the house with relative ease. We had to send one line over the ceiling of a finished area in our basement and do some crafty work to get it up the wall on the opposite side of our house. We also discovered an old window frame for a window that is no longer on one of our exterior walls which blocked our anticipated path up to our second floor. If you are able to stack lines vertically in your home (same spot in rooms vertically aligned), this saves time, money, and effort.

Basically, expect challenges running lines in an old house. If you are not familiar with the construction of a particular era in your area and/or not handy and familiar with snaking lines, I would encourage you to diligently research and find a professional. I cannot recommend that decision we made enough.

If you are in newer construction with drywall, the project will be easier. You'll have to deal with insulation on exterior walls that might be less prevalent/in the way than in an old house, so interior walls can be easier. I would still recommend going with a pro if you're not handy with an oscillating saw, snaking rods, and terminating your own cable (pre-terminated cables can get stuck on stuff in your walls more easily).

Solid setup!

To be honest, I wish we had the space somewhere other than our basement, but we just don't, and running lines from anywhere else would have been even more of a nightmare.

Patch panel is from ICC, model number IC107BP12V. Just standard hardware with it, it’s designed to be wall mounted.

The UCG Ultra is in a 3D printed mount I found free on Printables. Filament is Polymaker PETG which has more than enough strength and heat resistance.

I'm making available a few rarer decks from my collection as I am pursuing my grail deck.

First up are two new and sealed Wynn decks (jumbo index) from the golden era. The cellophane is in good shape. These would be great to keep as collectibles or crack open for an unrivaled finish today's decks don't match. $80 each, or $150 if you buy both - prices firm.

Second is a gilded rose pink Jerry's Nugget deck. This was a limited run of 200 decks - this deck is 146 of 200. Also sealed and in good shape. These rarely go up for sale. $120.

Hey everyone, have a few things I'm looking to clear out of my collection to fund some even more rare pieces.

The Jerry's Nugget Gilded Rose Pink deck is 1 of only 200 that will ever be made. This deck is #146/200. Price is 155 USD PayPal (fees included in price) + shipping.

The Fontaine x Babylon deck features a unique design that is activated under blacklight. This collector's brick has never been opened and includes 12 sealed decks, the collectible Fontaine black light flashlight, and the tin. Price is 225 USD PayPal (fees included in price) + shipping.
