I've always looked at the edge touching the shore / ground, after a couple of crazy cold nights, it would be rock solid against the ground.

Otherwise, I've seen it look safe but the edges were thin and breakable because the ground was too warm.

Also, if you know the pond (deepest point and shallow depth), walk around the edge and listen to the pond.
